Aims and Objectives: To develop in the pupil's fluency in Welsh and English and an awareness of their cultural heritage with particular reference to the locality. To make each pupil literate and numerate and emphasize the importance of good learning. To recognize excellence in every sphere of activity and pursue it. To stretch the intellectual, physical, creative, technological, and scientific capabilities of individual pupils. To provide a broad, balanced, inclusive, differentiated, and relevant curriculum. To enable pupils to acquire skills, qualifications, and experiences necessary for adult life. To develop in the school a caring community that respects moral and spiritual values. There is a 4 form intake to year 7 and pupils are taught in mixed ability groups in the majority of subjects. The emphasis in year 7 is on getting the pupils to settle in their new environment and ensuring continued academic progress. The form teachers strive to make the early period of transition between primary and secondary as welcoming as possible. In Year 8 pupils are placed in sets or bands in some subjects, according to ability. Pupils are encouraged to develop a wider circle of friends through involvement in extracurricular activities. Year 9 is all-important for giving pupils a direction for their future. Before the end of the KS3 subject, choices must be made for their GCSE examinations. The 180 Year 7 pupils and their families who are now part of the Plasma community and welcome back to our of Year 12 students who have chosen to pursue their post 16 education at Plasma. It is a pleasure to report to you that the school’s summer exam results at both A-Level and GCSE were excellent and amongst the best in the school’s history and a reflection of the huge effort and commitment shown by the pupils over the past few years ably supported by both staff and parents. The majority of our A-Level students have been accepted to the Universities of their choice, the majority of which are Russell Group Universities. We wish them well as they embark on a new and exciting chapter in their lives. Congratulations to our Year 11 pupils who have attained an outstanding set of GCSE results. The school’s performance ranks the school 5th in Cardiff. A full report on our external exam performance is available on the school website. We would like to remind you of the importance of the ‘Edulink1’ app as a means of accessing important information about your child’s education and progress. It allows staff, pupils, and parents greater access to information about pupil progress through the use of the internet and wireless devices. If you are having difficulties accessing the site, please contact the support school. We would also kindly ask you to monitor your child’s handbook and to sign it every week. We would also like to inform you of a few initiatives which involve parental participation. One of the key features of the school is the huge amount of support we receive from parents in a myriad of different ways which assist us in our work. The unique support we experience from parents assists us in creating a community focussed school which is firmly built on a positive parent–school relationship. We are eager for this relationship to continue and am looking for a new wave of parental volunteers. Bro Myrddin is a secondary school teaching the vast majority of subjects in Welsh. Pupils come to us from the ancient town of Carmarthen and the rural areas of the western and northern side of the beautiful County. In September 2002 the new school building was opened. The school can cater to 1,500 pupils including a maximum of over 200 sixth form students. Much effort has been spent to ensure the new school environment can enhance the academic and social development of the pupils in their respective year groups. The school has been built to the highest specifications and is well set to provide an exceptional atmosphere enabling us to maximize each pupil’s potential in achieving his/her personal goals. Our planning for the new school has involved the staff, the governors, and the pupils, and we are collaborating closely with Wiltshire FM, the company that is responsible for its day-to-day maintenance. We can now look forward to providing Welsh-medium education in a school whose physical environment will, for the first time, match the success of the teaching and learning for which Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni can be rightly proud. Our aim, therefore, is clear: it is to build on the proven achievements of the school. We are a unique school, as we are the only Welsh-medium secondary school in Caerphilly County Borough.
