Bro Myrddin is a secondary school teaching the vast majority of subjects in Welsh. Pupils come to us from the ancient town of Carmarthen and the rural areas of the western and northern side of the beautiful County. We are proud of the consistently high school academic standards, and a wide range of extra-curricular activities are also very important for us, with pupils experiencing success in various fields. The contribution to Welsh culture through a host of activities including the Welshness Project4Cymraeg Committee, and the Urdd and National Eisteddfod is of key importance, as is our contribution to the local community through charity work, volunteer work, and various other links. Bro Myrddin offers an education that endeavors to meet the needs of the individual in a completely supportive and Welsh environment. Each pupil is given an equal opportunity to develop to his/her full potential academically, socially, culturally, mentally, and physically. To create a lively community in which moral and spiritual values are appreciated and in which virtues such as justice, honesty, trust, tolerance, and a sense of duty are emphasized. To afford all pupils the opportunity of mastering communication skills in both Welsh and English, whilst emphasizing Welsh as the natural language of the school. To assist all pupils in developing skills relevant to the world of work, and which will enable them to work independently or as members of a team. To prepare pupils to live as responsible and valuable members of society, to form positive relationships with others, and to develop self-respect and respect for people, property, and the environment. To assist pupils in appreciating the heritage and culture of Wales and enable them to contribute to a multilingual society within Wales, Europe, and the world. Myrddin Community Primary School was built in 1960 and is situated in its own attractive and extensive grounds. The school is set in an elevated position within the county town of Carmarthen and enjoys panoramic views of Carmarthen town and the lower Towy Valley. The catchment area comprises some privately-owned housing but mostly social housing. There are many places of interest to visit in the surrounding area, which offer the school a range of opportunities for enhancing its curriculum through first-hand experiences. The school is made up of four mixed-age classes in the mainstream, which caters to pupils between the ages of three and eleven years ago. The school has a special needs unit attached. The Myrddin Special Needs Unit was established in 1975 and is made up of three special classes for pupils with severe learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties. In 1999 an Autistic Unit was added to the school providing education for pupils aged 3 to 11years of age on the autistic spectrum. The school provides a warm, safe, happy and caring environment for both pupils and staff. All staff members are firmly committed to providing equality of opportunity for all and ensuring that the potential of each child is fulfilled. The school has a very good reputation in the community for the quality of education and level of care provided for the pupils. The school prides itself on the close links it has developed with parents and the community. Under Local Authority guidelines, pupils are admitted to the Unit following recommendations by the ‘Placement Panel’ meeting held at the Education Office. The Units then hold an admission panel with parents and agencies to ensure that all needs identified in the statement of educational needs can be met.
