- Greenwood Garden School was started in 1974 and has been in operation for more than forty years. We are an international pre-school and kindergarten for children aging from 2-6 with teaching being done in English by mother-tongue educators experienced with young children. The Greenwood Garden program bases its philosophy on the concept that each child is special. They learn through play, and learning centers provide opportunities to explore and discover the world while allowing the child freedom of choice. We desire to create a loving and secure “first step” environment for the young child attending school for the first time. We foster a school that emphasizes love and concern and where children are taught values and respect for others. We at Greenwood Garden School strive to prepare the young international child with a strong foundation in English and to provide comprehensive educational experiences which help to develop the whole child in a warm, supportive environment. The Greenwood Garden School program bases its philosophy on the concept that each child is special, with individual and unique needs. Children learn at their rate of development, through exploration and discovery in an integrated, multi-aged, and multi-cultural environment. Children learn best by doing, with an emphasis on the process rather than the product. We believe that the Early Childhood experience is a very important foundation for all children’s future learning attitudes. Children learn through play. What may look like “play” is a child’s “work”. Through directed play and learning centers children recreate experiences that help them understand the world. When you look in the classroom and see the children building with blocks, dressing up, modeling with clay, interacting with technology, and many other play activities, learning is taking place. We are laying cornerstones for math, science, and reading. Children are learning HOW to think, not WHAT to think. They are also enhancing positive self-esteem. We teach to the seven areas of learning identified by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework: personal, social, and emotional development communication and language physical development literacy mathematics understanding the world (science) and expressive arts and design. We promote the educational theories of Jean Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, Maria Montessori’s practical life experiences, Daniel Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence, and Lev Vygotsky’s theory of play and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). Your child’s transition from home to school is encouraged in a caring and safe environment. The children are allowed to learn in a variety of ways to accommodate their learning preferences (auditory, visual, kinesthetic). They learn by doing sequential activities in all areas. The program balances small group and large group activities, quiet and noisy activities, large muscle and fine motor activities, listening and participation activities. Clear, age-appropriate expectations are set for behavior, letting the children know what is expected of them at school and allowing the teacher to encourage success while minimizing frustrations. Children feel valued, and the program helps them to develop a sense of trust and ownership with their school and learning. View full school
- Welcome to our successful school where children always come first. We are committed to all the children achieving and reaching their full potential. We are proud that we provide a caring and supportive atmosphere, which allows children to develop emotionally, socially, and academically. Our staff play a major role in the children's development they have only one priority, and that is to provide the very best that we can offer. Greenwood Primary is a very caring and happy school where success is celebrated. Parents are actively encouraged to take a keen interest in all aspects of school life so that the staff, parents, and, most importantly, the children can work together. We warmly welcome visits to Greenwood to see our children at work and experience at first hand what we have to offer at our school. Values: To provide a warm and safe environment for all children and where everyone feels valued To provide a broad, balanced, and stimulating curriculum that is relevant to the children’s needs and interests To create a supportive environment that promotes communication, collaboration, and reflection To build children’s learning power skills to enable them to reach their full potential and equip them for life long learning To achieve high standards, in all areas of the curriculum, including the physical as well as the academic, spiritual, and moral development of our children To encourage children to develop a caring and considerate attitude to others, based on mutual respect and understanding To actively encourage all children to develop their skills, gifts, and talents, in all areas of the curriculum To actively encourage children to adopt a healthy lifestyle To encourage and enable the continuous professional development of all staff The school offers a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum, which is designed to allow children access to learning opportunities that interest and motivate them, and which develop their skills to succeed in later life. While prioritizing the basic skills of Mathematics and English, the school promotes creativity and cross-curricular knowledge through the foundation subjects. Arts and creative weeks are planned regularly and music is taught by specialist staff. Spanish is the adopted Modern Foreign Language in KS2. The teaching of reading is prioritized throughout the school but particularly in the Infant department. The primary strategy taught is synthetic phonics. The Infant classes are taught phonics daily and much of this is through sets (groups made according to each child’s stage of learning). The school uses the scheme ‘Letters and Sounds’ throughout the Infants but the commercially produced ‘Jolly Phonics scheme’ is used in the Early Years to assist children through actions and songs. The children in the Infants are hard to read by an adult twice a week. One occasion is individual, using ‘The Oxford Reading Tree’ and other schemes, used to give variety, including phonetically decodable books. These are arranged into colored book bands and are sent home weekly with a record book for the parents’ information. The second occasion is guided reading in which small groups of similar ability children read a book together. Separate schemes are used for this, including ‘All Aboard’, ‘Rigby Star’, and Pearson’s ‘Phonic Bug Scheme’, and some non-scheme books which have been color banded. These books are not sent home but can be seen by parents on request. The school plans to use the National Curriculum without using a commercially produced Mathematics scheme. Teachers plan activities using a variety of resources to match the needs of groups and individual children. Number and computation are given priority and are taught every week. The school has a calculation policy that explains the order concepts are taught and the methods used. (Copies of this may be requested from the school office) All activities are differentiated (planned at different levels) within classes and in Years 5 and 6 the children are taught in maths sets for 5 days in year 5 and 3 days in year 6. - Greenwood is one of the great success stories among Toronto independent schools. Welcome to Greenwood! We've been committed to providing a personalized learning experience to each student who has come through our doors since we opened them in 2002. At Greenwood, we foster each young person's independence and encourage them to explore what drives them. A co-ed school serving 498 students in Grades 7-12, we personalize the learning experience, empowering each student to venture further academically and beyond. We support the development of the whole person through the Adviser program and activities outside the classroom, such as service-learning, athletics, outdoor education, and the arts; students cultivate the intellectual, moral, performance, and civic character skills to become tomorrow's leaders. What does this personalized learning and attention to character mean for our students? Despite our many "big school" offerings — such as specialized classes, clubs, and a broad range of athletics — we maintain the feel of a small school, where every student is known, challenged, and supported. Please read about how our teachers deliver customized education in the classroom or learn about Greenwood's life and how students are pushed to grow beyond their comfort zone by our dedicated staff and through our programs. When our graduates leave Greenwood, they are not only prepared for university; they are eager to make a difference in the world. Our alumni have a shared sense of adventure and are prepared to explore what excites them – whether volunteering with Doctors Without Borders or pursuing a graduate degree at Cambridge. Our mission is to challenge and inspire each student to develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to reach their full potential in life. In 2001, one of Greenwood's founders, a successful wealth manager, lawyer, and entrepreneur, realized that the people who made the most significant contributions to society were rarely those who had chosen a narrow, traditional path. Instead, they were those who paired an independent spirit with a more profound sense of character and were as energized by a challenge as they were by success. Our four founders - Richard Wernham, Julia West, David Latimer, and the late John Latimer - shared this belief, and Greenwood is the result. Greenwood opened its doors in 2002 to 72 students in Grades 7 and 9, in a newly renovated building. Today, our school numbers 498 students and more than 90 teachers and staff, and our campus has grown into one of the most advanced facilities among Canadian independent schools. Since its founding, Greenwood has garnered a reputation as a supportive co-ed community where students are engaged, open-minded, and at-ease every day. Our committed parent community has been essential in bringing the dream of Greenwood's founders to life, contributing more than $20 million in donations in the school's first five years to help offset funding costs and recently joining together for a $30 million campaign to fund the expansion and renovation of our campus. Together with thousands of parent volunteer hours, Greenwood's tradition of support offers an example to students. Since its founding, the school has garnered a reputation as a supportive co-ed community where students are engaged, open-minded, and at-ease every day. Our teachers get to know students as learners and as people to ensure they get the support and challenge they need to stretch. The result? Our alumni attend highly selective postsecondary programs across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom - and when they arrive, many reports that they are better prepared than their peers.
- For more than a century, Greenwood has been known for its quality college preparatory program. Today Greenwood continues to provide advanced learning opportunities from kindergarten through twelfth grade to equip students for college success. Instilling learning qualities and thinking skills that will last a lifetime prepares our students for whatever the future holds. Our mission is to support Missouri State University as a laboratory of best practices in teaching and to prepare students who are knowledgeable, creative, caring, and engaged citizens.
