Welcome to Kilburn Grange School, a two-form entry, primary free school based in Brent. We opened in September 2015 with our first year of children and their families. As you will see from our vision statement, the children are at the heart of everything we do and as we grow, we will continue to meet the needs of all of the children in our care. At Kilburn Grange School we follow the Early Years and Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and design our curriculum to ensure this is met. The curriculum is broad and balanced, providing opportunities for pupils of all stages of development and backgrounds to succeed. There is a focus on core learning and the use of ICT is integral, enabling all pupils to gain full access to the curriculum. At Kilburn Grange School we follow a topic-based approach. Each half-term children learn about a new topic, which feeds into an overarching theme for the term. The children explore stories and write, as well as activities linked to the other areas of learning linked that topic. From the Reception Class to Year 6 in Key Stage 2, Kilburn Grange School offers a curriculum suitable for our inclusive intake that meets the needs of all pupils and leads to high standards of academic and personal achievement. Learning in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 is based on the National Curriculum and at times entails formal teaching of spelling, punctuation, and grammar as part of our emphasis on literacy. ICT provision is innovative and supports all learners. Throughout all the age ranges we ensure that RE and PSHE are taught so that the pupils can learn core values and beliefs from the very start. This includes learning Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural aspects of life and fundamental British Values, where they regard people of all faiths, races, and cultures with respect and tolerance. The curriculum is designed to support children to make links in their learning identifying how to process and present scientific evidence through statistics in maths, for example, or using the skills of diary writing learned in English in the morning to record historical facts in the afternoon lesson. To support these links in learning the design of the curriculum is broadly built around topics. Additional work in English, Maths, and ICT may also be planned. Topics generally last for half a term. Information about class topics is available from the curriculum information leaflets. Learning in the classroom is enriched through the careful selection of related educational visits, visitors, and special events. This year Years 5 and 4 have swimming lessons on a Tuesday. We greatly appreciate parental support for educational visits, with practical work in the classroom, during library sessions, and for reading activities. If you can offer some time to the school please see the class teacher or the team in the main office. We also appreciate parental involvement in homework activities. Parental support to ensure that homework tasks are completed and return to school by the due date is invaluable. We have developed a holistic approach to working with our pupils, their families, and the wider community and offer a range of therapeutic interventions based on best practice and current knowledge. Each Pathway follows a curriculum designed for the pupils in each area. The children have access to appropriate curriculum opportunities, including emotional health and well-being, to support the development of the skills needed to help them stay safe and healthy, develop their self-esteem and understand the responsibilities of adult life, particularly regarding child care and parenting skills. Grange School exists to provide the “Autism Community” of Manchester and beyond with an outstanding education service. As part of that role, we offer a city-wide outreach service. Outreach support and advice are available to all Manchester schools to help you develop autism awareness and autism-specific approaches. The Outreach Team aims to raise your capacity to meet the needs of the autistic children and young people in your care. The ELE room or Extended Learning Environment provides opportunities for our children and young people to explore and interact with the world through the use of sight, sound, touch, and movement. we adapt this peaceful space to suit each child’s communication and sensory likes and goals. Assessment across the department is based on clear, concise observations of children that show development against the Early Learning Goals as well as the whole school assessment tool, B Squared. This will frequently highlight the very spiky development profile of young learners with autism. Children who start in the First Steps Pathway are also baselined against an autism-specific tool that establishes how children best learn, how a child’s autism presents itself, and identifies strategies that will help a child’s overall development. All children in the First Steps Pathway have a communication toolbox, individual targets and plans, and a behavior support program if appropriate. These are reviewed regularly in conjunction with Speech and Language Therapy and or Occupational Therapy input as appropriate. Learning walls are being developed across the key stage. These will highlight priorities for learning each half term. They are supported by regular and close observations of children engaging in their learning journey. The Key stage has standardized Learning Journeys that collect evidence of learning across the seven areas of the curriculum. Evidence is collected each half term for the prime areas of the curriculum. Evidence for the specific areas is collected across each term. These represent each child’s skill level against the whole school assessment tool B squared. Alongside this is the Assessment for Learning observation which aims to inform future planning according to each child’s unique interests. We encourage self-evaluation through daily celebration times were ‘WOW’ moments are recorded and celebrated for each child. These also form part of the individual child’s learning journey evidence. Snapshots of children at play are annotated by the child wherever possible through the use of our pupil voice ‘smiley face’ system. These are added to the Learning Journey each term. The next steps are identified. Parents are also encouraged to celebrate their child’s good news and contribute to the Learning Journey. They also have carpet sessions as a whole class every day. Children in the EYFS learn through playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking. We like to work closely with parents in the EYFS to support the children’s learning and enable them to reach their full potential. Therefore, we have termly opportunities for parents or carers to come into school to join in with their children’s learning on our Celebration Days to attend parent workshops for reading, writing, and maths, and to use home school diaries to share any special times or achievements with the rest of their class. At Bessemer Grange, the study of English is used to develop the children’s skills and abilities in speaking and listening, reading, and writing so that the children become confident and competent in communicating their ideas across a range of different contexts and for a variety of purposes. In line with the National Curriculum, the study of Mathematics is focused on the development of the children’s mathematical fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. Our home Maths learning scheme is geared towards encouraging the children of Bessemer to practice their number facts at home and then apply them to problem-solving activities in and out of the classroom. Skills development is embedded in our approach to Maths from the Foundation Stage upwards with children being provided with a range of practical resources to help them work out answers and results. Bessemer Grange Primary School is an incredibly creative school. Each year all children from nursery to year six receive artist workshops, theatre workshops, music workshops, visit galleries, theatres, and concert halls. At Bessemer Grange Primary School we teach a broad and balanced curriculum. Each half term we teach a new topic. Each topic creatively links history, PSHE, geography, art, music, design technology, and computing. As well as the foundation subjects the topics are taught through English and Maths where links can be made. Religious education, Physical education, Spanish, Science, and Computing are taught as subjects in their own right. Overton Grange School: an Academy committed to providing excellent secondary education for the local community. As Ofsted stated in February 2016 “This is a Good Academy”. Overton Grange School is a co-educational community of approximately 1,250 11-19-year-old students. In June 2011 the School converted from being a secondary school run by the London Borough of Sutton to ‘Academy Status’ (an independent state school overseen by the Department for Education).
