Welcome to Kilburn Grange School, a two-form entry, primary free school based in Brent. We opened in September 2015 with our first year of children and their families. As you will see from our vision statement, the children are at the heart of everything we do and as we grow, we will continue to meet the needs of all of the children in our care. We have a highly qualified, dedicated team of staff with specialized skills to ensure the pupils have a provision that is catered to their individual needs. One of our strengths is our engaging and rich curriculum, which enables the pupils not only to take ownership and pride over their learning but most of all, to have fun. At Kilburn Grange School we follow the Early Years and Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and design our curriculum to ensure this is met. The curriculum is broad and balanced, providing opportunities for pupils of all stages of development and backgrounds to succeed. There is a focus on core learning and the use of ICT is integral, enabling all pupils to gain full access to the curriculum. At Kilburn Grange School we follow a topic-based approach. Each half-term children learn about a new topic, which feeds into an overarching theme for the term. The children explore stories and write, as well as activities linked to the other areas of learning linked that topic. From the Reception Class to Year 6 in Key Stage 2, Kilburn Grange School offers a curriculum suitable for our inclusive intake that meets the needs of all pupils and leads to high standards of academic and personal achievement. Learning in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 is based on the National Curriculum and at times entails formal teaching of spelling, punctuation, and grammar as part of our emphasis on literacy. ICT provision is innovative and supports all learners. Throughout all the age ranges we ensure that RE and PSHE are taught so that the pupils can learn core values and beliefs from the very start. This includes learning Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural aspects of life and fundamental British Values, where they regard people of all faiths, races, and cultures with respect and tolerance. Our goals for our pupils include the following: To achieve and exceed expected standards in English, mathematics, science, and ICT and acquire a deep understanding of the relevant knowledge and skills. Above all else, our goal is for Kilburn Park pupils is to be excited to take on the challenges that lie ahead because they feel prepared and capable. The school curriculum at Kilburn Park includes the ‘National Curriculum’, Religious Education, and Sex Education. The national curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject. The National Curriculum is organized into blocks of years called ‘key stages’. At the end of each key stage, your child’s teacher will formally assess their performance to measure your child’s progress. At Kilburn Park, we teach from the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum. For each subject, there’s a ‘program of study. It describes what children should learn. Our science curriculum aims to provide children with knowledge and concepts across all three strands of learning. Through a range of inquiry-led activities, practical experiments, and investigations we want our pupils to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the natural world around them. We encourage children to understand how to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyze causes. At Kilburn Park School, everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play in safeguarding children. We have a responsibility to provide a safe environment in which children can learn. We teach Religious Education as it informs our values and is reflected in what we say and how we behave. We aim to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of the religions and beliefs which form part of the world in which we live. Religious Education provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human. Through learning in Religious Education, children gain knowledge and understanding about the beliefs, practices, and customs of the six major world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. Children also learn about the founders of these religions. Throughout the year major festivals are celebrated, either through RE lessons or through whole school celebrations. We teach personal, social, health, citizenship, and economic education as it is an important and necessary part of all children’s education. The Headteacher is responsible for the day-to-day management and leadership of the school whereas the governors are the strategic arm of the school. The governing body is made up of elected parents, staff including the Headteacher, foundation governors (appointed by the Diocese), and a local authority governor. English is a core curriculum subject and is taught every day. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles to teach English skills. We aim to develop children’s ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes, including the communication of their ideas, views, and feelings. We do this through daily English lessons in which children experience whole-class reading or writing activities, guided group or children's independent activities, and whole-class sessions to review and assess progress and learning. Children are taught a range of strategies to help them read, including phonics (the sounds letters make). We use the Letters and Sounds scheme to teach phonics. You can find out more about this scheme if you Google search ‘Letters and Sounds – The Department for Education.’ Discrete phonics lessons are taught daily in Reception, Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3. Children are assessed and then streamed into relevant phases depending on their ability. Phase 1: Phonics lessons take place daily (this phase is mostly taught in Reception class). Children explore sounds and develop their listening skills. Phase 2: Phonics lessons take place on 4 days of the week. The Letters and Sounds scheme is used to deliver a progressive program of word reading skills. By the end of phase 2, many children should be able to read some VC (vowel-consonant) and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and to spell them. They start to learn to read and spell some high-frequency ‘tricky’ words. Phase 3 and 4: Phonics lessons take place on 4 days of the week. Letters and Sounds is the scheme used to deliver a progressive program of word reading skills. Children begin to read and write one grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes. They blend and segment CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant), CCVC, and CVCC words for reading and spelling and use their phonic knowledge when trying to read and write more complex words. Phase 5 and 6: Phonics lessons take place on 4 days of the week. Letters and Sounds are used to deliver a progressive program of word reading skills. Children are taught to read words automatically if they are very familiar with decoding them quickly and silently because their sounding and blending routine is now established and to decode them out loud.
