At Harris Primary Academy Benson we aim to make learning irresistible, ensuring our children develop a genuine life-long love of learning and that every child flourishes by delivering an enjoyable curriculum that allows all children to succeed academically, physically, emotionally, and socially. There is plenty of time for fun and creativity throughout the school day and everything we do is underpinned by dedicated teaching of reading, writing, and maths. This combination means that our children become eager, confident, and imaginative learners. Our children are at the heart of everything we do with the academy and it is our committed ambition to empower all our children to become compassionate, polite, ambitious, global citizens of the future. Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and a creative curriculum. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safe examples of this can be seen in our e-safety lessons and instilling BLP into our classrooms. Our pupils are given the freedom to make choices and to take part in after-school activities. Our core value of Respect ensures tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs. The Academy enhances pupils' understanding of different faiths and beliefs through religious education studies P.S.H.E. work visits to other schools in different settings to participate in celebrations such as Diwali welcoming visitors from other schools that are not predominately white British and enjoying a depth of study during themed weeks. The Academy takes part in many charity events, holds events like International days where parents are invited in to share their beliefs, traditions, and customs with the children thus helps our Academy to enrich and extend understanding. Benson is a wonderful school that welcomes children and families from so many different cultures and countries. Our strength is our diversity! When you join Benson you become a Benson Bee, a member of our community, a team player who supports and encourages all, always prepared to try something new and work hard to achieve success, but most importantly you will always remember that at Benson: 'There are no limits to what you can achieve' Whenever you walk into a school you can get a real sense of what is going on from the way children and adults greet you. At Benson, one is struck by the friendly nature of all the staff and pupils here. Respect for one another is a keystone to our success. We are proud that we treat each other well and know that we in return are shown the respect we all deserve. This school is a ‘respecting rights’ school and as such helps children understand that they are valued and listened to. We will be teaching our children that respect is a very essential element of life. But we also have a really important job to do to ensure that our children grow up with the necessary skills of reading, writing, and maths. We will be trying to instill a real love for books and the characters encountered there. Children will learn not only how to read a wide range of literature but will also have opportunities to talk about how stories impact them and their own lives and how they can bring history & RE alive. We will help children make mathematical links with the world around them and show them how maths skills help solve scientific and geographical problems. Of course, as a healthy school, we are keen to make sure that our children are active and skilled in running, throwing, catching, batting and swimming. We have some top athletes, cricketers, basketball players, and footballers here (watch this space Aston Villa!). Our links with King Edwards Aston Grammar School ensure we have the highest quality ‘skills’ teaching here. We know their support makes a real difference to all we do. We value creativity too. Not just through art and design and technology but through the way we teach in every subject by asking open questions and demanding that our children make judgments and evaluations. Our ‘Ask it’ sessions challenge our children to deepen their understanding of the world around them. So there are no limits. At Benson, we all work to create an environment where all children feel welcome, accepted, valued, safe, and confident that they will get the right support to help develop their talent and achieve their goals. We work hard to help remove barriers to learning, to give each child the chance to reach their full potential. Successful inclusive provision is seen as the responsibility of the whole school community and applicable to all pupils. At Benson Community School we work hard to deliver a curriculum that is engaging, exciting, and inquiring. We teach all subjects through a ‘creative curriculum’ which means the learning across English, Maths, Science, Design, and Technology, History and Geography are all linked by a common theme each half-term or term where possible.
