The early years of a child’s education are critical in their overall personal development. At Auckland Pre-Prep we believe that making learning enjoyable at an early age stimulates a child’s ideas and passion for learning, and has a positive impact on their ability to master the solid foundations of reading, writing, and number work on which all future learning is based. As a small, family school we find that children feel immediately comfortable in our happy, vibrant classrooms and do not find the transition from home or nursery overwhelming. Our children also greatly benefit from plenty of individual attention as we have very small classes, who are supported by a qualified, full-time teacher and teaching assistant. By the time children leave our Pre-Prep to enter Reception Year, we would expect them to be 12 months ahead in reading, writing, and numeracy. Auckland College Prep School aims to prepare boys and girls from the age of 4 to 11 years for entry into secondary school. Our Secondary School (Year 7 through to Year 11) has a growing reputation for nurturing individuals' academic and personal development that effectively prepares our boys and girls for GCSE and other examinations. We welcome pupils from across the region, with varying levels of academic ability, providing a safe and stimulating environment for learning. Our small classes mean that students can form effective relationships with our specialist teachers and teaching staff that helps to develop their self-confidence and enjoyment in subject areas. The curriculum in the first three years of our Secondary School is broad and balanced so that pupils can explore many different areas of knowledge and develop their skills, abilities, and interests. The subjects taught include English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, History, Geography, PE, Spanish, PSHE, and Art. English, English Literature, Science, ICT, and Mathematics are compulsory GCSE subjects. Towards the end of Year 9, pupils choose three further GCSE options which are currently: History, Geography, PE, Business, Spanish, and Art. Established in 2003, Auckland International College (AIC) is an NZ independent day and boarding school of approximately 300 students, which offers a 3-year senior secondary school education. The specific focus of the school is to prepare students for entry to top universities worldwide. AIC is the only NZ school where all students study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and it has the largest number of IB Diploma students in New Zealand. Year 11 students study the Preparation Year Programme for the IB Diploma, which includes SAT preparation, while Year 12 and 13 students study the IB Diploma itself. The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) was selected by AIC as the high school leaving qualification that best fit AIC’s vision. (To be New Zealand’s global pathway school through outstanding academic achievement and offers of place from the world’s leading universities) The IBDP is a demanding course designed for able students aged 16-19 years. While highly academic, the program aims to educate the whole person, helping students to become critical thinkers and independent and caring young men and women. Student performance is graded according to criteria that are moderated internationally. The Year 11 Preparation Year Programme equips students with the skills and knowledge required to meet the demands of the IB Diploma Programme. Each student studies all of the subjects offered in the Diploma Programme, allowing them to make an informed and appropriate choice of subjects for the IB Diploma. In addition, the program ensures the well-being of students through Health and Social Education, Recreation and Sport, and participation in College-wide IB Diploma CAS activities. Assessments in Year 11 are designed to familiarise students with the type of learning tasks they will meet in the IB Diploma courses and will include essays, oral presentations, commentaries, and written tasks. There are examinations in term 4. This half-year course develops and improves the English language skills required for the AIC Year 11 course, the Preparation Year Programme for the IB Diploma. In addition, students develop their skills in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Art. Physical and mental well-being is ensured through the Health and Physical Education components of the program. The study is integrated into English, Social Studies, and Health, whereby teaching and learning are connected thematically and linguistically. The course is designed to elevate the students’ English skills from an IELTS equivalent band score of 3.5 to 4.5 within a half-yearly time frame. The course is offered once a year from January to June. The clubs and activities are open to all AIC students. Twice a year AIC holds a club and activities sign-up afternoon when club leaders advertise their club and recruit new participants. All of the clubs and activities are student-driven with an adult supervisor. Being student-led means that strong leadership and organizational abilities are required to make a success of each club and activity. In general, most clubs have just one leader, though some larger clubs have a co-leader or deputy leader. If a student wishes to start their club where their particular interest is not already represented, this is welcomed and they are encouraged to do so. The breadth and range of clubs and activities provide a multitude of opportunities for students to exhibit and grow their leadership abilities and styles.AIC prioritizes university counseling support by employing university counselors. These specialist counselors offer comprehensive support and guidance to AIC students’ applications to universities. The counselors prepare students for SATs, explain what university admissions officers are looking for, provide individual university interview coaching, and, because of their specialist expertise, they can explain the best ways to apply to the various universities. From Year 11, AIC students start the university application and coaching preparation process. The counselors maintain close relationships with teachers to ensure that letters of recommendation to universities are of the highest quality.
