Arcada is a multi-professional university of applied sciences (UAS) with a campus located in Arabianranta, Helsinki. Arcada University of Applied Sciences Ltd. maintains the Arcada University of Applied Sciences based on a license granted by the government in the plenary session. The Arcada Foundation wholly owns Arcada University of Applied Sciences Ltd. The general framework for Arcada's activities is defined in Arcada's instructions. Arcada's activities are also regulated by current legislation relating to universities of applied science and limited liability companies, Arcada's operating license (granted by the government in plenary session), instructions from the Ministry of Education and Culture, The articles of association of the Arcada University of Applied Sciences Ltd. and Arcada's internal policy documents, Arcada's strategy, operational plan and the Finnish Corporate Governance Code, Arcada's senior administration consists of the Board and rector of Arcada University of Applied Sciences Ltd. Arcada strives for the continuous development of its activities and to be a nationally and internationally attractive and competitive institution of higher education. This is done by developing methods and routines of continually evaluating the relevance, effect, and impact of the education and research activities. Arcada's quality management system is based on the PDCA-model or the so-called Deming cycle. The system's purpose is to create and establish improvement in everything we do by four steps: Plan – Do – Check – Act.) The Arcada quality culture is based on result awareness, the individual taking of responsibility, and an open climate/dialogue and interaction with the environment. Everybody – both students and staff – contributes to Arcada's reaching the goals by taking personal responsibility, everyday activity, and open communication. The direct communication between heads, lecturers, instructors, tutors, researchers, students, and administrative staff constitutes an essential ingredient in the Arcada quality structure. The personal contact areas are of the most significant relevance when collecting information on the studies' contents and study environment. The activities' quality is monitored with the support of annual quality reports and in two internal quality discussions with the departments and units. The Management group regularly follows up on how Arcada's operations are running and how the development work is actualized. The departments' quality teams develop and continuously follow up on the quality of education. Under the head of the department, the department is responsible for seeing that the student reconnection works and that the information/data is used to improve quality. The Board of the University follows up on how the functions are developed by the university's strategy and how the functions are adapted to changes in the operational environment. Arcada's operative activities are split up into the teaching departments, the studies' support functions, administrative functions, and financial functions. The cooperation between the departments is characterized by open communication, a focus on results, and the aim to maximize the benefit for the whole of Arcada. Arcada offers vocationally oriented university education and engages in research and development to ensure a Swedish-speaking workforce's availability and important bilingualism. The educational activities are organized in four departments for awarding degrees. The degree programs in the same sector cooperate in clusters. The research and development activities are an integrated part of education. They are focused on strategically selected profile fields, where research and development take place in teaching teams lead by a principal lecturer. Research and development are run in networks of research institutes and other universities nationally and internationally.
