  10. The area is known as the ‘Welsh Province’, which comprises Wales and Herefordshire, has a long history of Christianity. The martyrdom of Ss. Alban, Julius, and Aaron is the first landmark in our Christian history in Britain. They were probably put to death in the persecution of Valerian (257-259). It is believed Alban was martyred at where is now the City of St. Albans in Hertfordshire, and it is believed that Julius and Aaron were citizens of Caerleon, near to modern-day Newport, and were martyred there. The Venerable Bede (672-375), following Gildas (500-570), mentions them in his Ecclesiastical History and they are to be found in the Roman Martyrology. We also know that at the Council of Arles (314) three British Bishops were present. During these years Christianity made great strides and spread throughout the whole land until the final withdrawal of the Roman Legions in 406. While Eastern Britain eventually became England through the Anglo Saxon invasion, Wales remained steadfastly Christian, which produced many great Christian Leaders, including Ss. Illtyd, Dyfrig (d.550), David (d.589) and Teilo (d.560). Perhaps it is St Dyfrig, also known as Dubricius and Devereux, who should be the Patron Saint of Herefordshire and South Wales. He is our Father in Faith he gave the strongest impulse to the vast enterprise of evangelization of saints such as Teilo, Samson, and Illtyd. Dyfrig was born in Herefordshire at Madley. His two great monasteries were at Moccas, further along, the road to Bredwardine and Hay of Wye, and at Hetland, again on the banks of the Wye near Ross. He became Bishop of Ergyng, an area that more or less covered the three counties that became the Archdiocese of Cardiff in 1916. Dyfrig was said to have attended the Synod of Llanddewi Brefi in 545, where he resigned his See in favor of St David and retired to Bardsey Island, there to die. In 597 St. Augustine of Canterbury was sent by Pope St. Gregory the Great to begin the conversion of the pagan English. He had two meetings with the British Bishops and Abbots. Augustine wanted the Welsh Church to amend a number of its local traditions, particularly to keep Easter according to the Roman date. The result was an excess of ill-feeling between the English and Welsh Churches which Augustine’s successor, St. Lawrence, caused in Ireland and Scotland as well. The dispute lasted until 768 when a young Welsh Bishop called Elfodd persuaded his fellow countrymen to come into line with the Roman Easter date.
  11. St Aloysius College has been educating girls in the heart of the city of Adelaide since 1880. The images on this website capture the vibrant and creative environment in which our current students learn and grow into confident and capable young women. Our academic programs offer a wide range of subjects to enable all students to pursue their passions. With an outstanding tertiary entrance record, we are proud of the many inspiring role models, including our outstanding teaching staff, who encourage all students to strive for excellence in their chosen fields. The College's curriculum extension programs enable students to explore a range of activities outside the classroom. As a Mercy school, a commitment to justice underpins all that we do. Our Justice and Mercy group, along with the Mercy in Action Passport (MiAP), make an awareness of social issues and a sense of agency in addressing every student's education. A thriving sports program and an active Outdoor Education platform, including the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, make SAC an exciting and engaging school. The international dimension of an education at St Aloysius College is central to our success. We welcome international students from many countries to complete their studies in Adelaide. We also offer exchanges and study tours to many countries, supported by an excellent language program. We believe that Gospel values guide all the activities of St Aloysius College. We recognize that the foundations of St Aloysius College rest on the teachings of the Catholic Church. We encourage our students to be confident young women who, with Christian courage, will meet the challenges of the future. We nurture in our students an enduring zest for all aspects of life and learning. We offer a comprehensive and rich curriculum that aims to provide diverse interests, talents, and educational needs. We encourage students to be self-disciplined and purposeful as they strive for personal excellence. We believe that we are celebrating and continuing God's creation by encouraging our students in imaginative and creative pursuits. We care about our environment and encourage responsible use of the world's limited resources. We encourage our students to adopt a balanced approach to living. We believe in developing in students a critical awareness of the world about them, their own needs, and others' needs. As a community, we celebrate our gifts and achievements, and we support one another, particularly in times of particular need. Our vision vision is the hallmarks of St. Aloysius College and forms the foundations of our vision as a Mercy school and a local Church. We believe in God. 12. We believe in the sign of God's merciful justice - Jesus Christ. We believe in the Spirit, enabling us to be a sign of God's mercy in the community. We believe in the sacredness of life. We believe in our responsibility to all people. We believe in our responsibility for continuing the work of creation.
  13. View full school
