Thank you for your interest in Seoul International School. We value you as parents who wish to provide the best education possible for your child. Seoul International School presents a traditional, yet greatly challenging U.S. curriculum of wide-ranging college preparatory courses. The dynamic and caring members of our faculty are dedicated to the intellectual and social development of young people within a nurturing and supportive environment. The school seeks to bring together highly motivated students from around the world who have demonstrated academic promise and sound character and who will be able to contribute their talents and energies to the school community. We look for students and families who share the values of our community diversity, integrity, respect, communication, and service. Regardless of race or creed, Seoul International School is interested in students who are eager to develop within an environment of excellence with a global perspective in education.
Seoul International School (SIS) is an academic institute whose purpose is to provide a challenging U.S. curriculum to meet the primary and secondary educational needs of international students living in Seoul, Korea. The school is committed to the arts, humanities, and sciences as the best preparation for higher education, for service to humanity, and life-long learning in our rapidly changing world. Our efforts focus on developing students’ intellectual, creative, moral, physical, and emotional abilities to their fullest, in cooperation with parents and the global community.SIS seeks to offer a broad set of educational experiences, both curricular and co-curricular, in an environment that is safe, orderly, and supportive.
We believe that every day of a child’s educational journey should engage, motivate and inspire them, and this is especially true as children begin their educational journey. The Elementary School curriculum is designed by the faculty with the developmental needs of the children in mind. The process of learning, thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry are stressed. This approach promotes a deeper understanding of the material covered and increases student motivation and interest. An important element in an SIS Elementary School education is the learning that takes place in and about the community. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively and to always consider the needs and perspectives of others. Students learn to be kind, honest, and respectful. In turn, they learn that they are deserving of respect. Students in this caring community setting feel heard, honored, and appreciated, freeing them up to enjoy the challenges inherent in the learning that lies before them.
Our mission is not only to prepare students for the next step in their educational careers but to foster an international-mindedness that sparks innovation and curiosity in both learning and life. Our highly trained and qualified teachers remain leaders in their field both internationally and in their home countries through dedicated professional development, AP training, faculty collaboration, and a keen desire to deliver the best of instruction and assessment for our students. In turn, SIS students gain the academic, social, and leadership skills necessary to enhance and contribute to the global community we live in.
Seoul International School provides a safe and secure learning environment for your child. Significant and ongoing renovations allow us to keep pace with the ever-changing needs of our instructional programs. The most significant recent project has been the completion of the new elementary and middle school, which includes, bright, naturally lit classrooms with ample space for students to work together in groups. In the summer of 2015, the school had its science labs and auditorium renovated in the main building. Our 350 seat school auditorium is used for school assemblies, teacher and parent functions, fine arts productions, and concerts and is fully equipped with lighting and sound systems. Music students are offered a range of facilities from the band and choir rooms to soundproofed practice rooms.
When Seoul International School opened its doors in 1973, it became the first foreign school, after Korean Liberation in 1945, to be fully recognized by the ROK Ministry of Education with a license issued to SIS on June 5, 1973. From that beginning, SIS has grown and expanded to provide excellent opportunities in education for the growing and changing expatriate community. SIS was first located on the campus of Konkuk University where a new classroom facility was completed in 1976. The first graduation of the four-year high school program was held in 1978. As SIS grew and expanded a larger facility and campus were needed. In 1981, the present eight-acre site was selected, and the unique building of Korean design with 150,000 square feet was completed just over four years later. The move to the lovely wooded campus with its many cultural artifacts was made in May 1985. Conveniently located on the southeastern border of Seoul in the direction of Seongnam City, the school is about twenty-five minutes south of Lotte World, the Jamsil subway station, and Olympic Park.
The Western Association of School and Colleges (WASC) based in California accredited Seoul International School for a six-year term in 1979. Subsequent accreditation was proudly received in 1985, 1991, 1997, 2003, and the spring of 2009. The philosophy and learning expectations explain what Seoul International School is striving to achieve as it adapts to the ever-changing needs of Seoul’s International Community. SIS stands as an educational institution of high quality where culture blending and a global focus are evident in both the academic and activity programs.
