St. Peter’s Primary is a Roman Catholic School situated in the Morningside area of Edinburgh. Our School aims to provide a learning environment where all pupils are happy, confident, and secure where each child acquires knowledge, skills, and understanding, to the very best of his/her ability, in an atmosphere that fosters concern for others and a sense of self-worth. At St. Peter’s RC Primary, we aim to provide a welcoming, inclusive learning environment of the highest quality where all pupils are happy, safe, confident, secure and where each child acquires the necessary skills for learning and skills for life. St Peter’s R.C. Primary School opened in 1910. A new school was built on the Morningside site, which opened in April 2005. The school serves a large catchment area in South Edinburgh, which includes the Roman Catholic parish of St Peter’s and parts of the parishes of St Columba’s, the Sacred Heart, St Albert the Great, and St Patrick’s. There are 21 class teachers, some of whom are part-time. The senior management team is made up of the Head Teacher, two part time Depute Head Teachers, and a Principal Teacher, each with a class teaching commitment, which allows them to support the learning and teaching throughout the school, in addition to their management responsibilities, and the Business Manager. Learners are further supported by a full-time Support for Learning teacher. The Nursery is staffed by one full-time teacher and two full-time Early Years Practitioners, as well as a trainee Early Years Practitioner. There is a part-time Physical Education specialist teacher (2 days). The teaching of Music is supported for 1 and a half days and Art for one day. Violin and cello instructors visit for one-half day per week. Support staff comprises a school administrator, a school support assistant, 12 pupil support assistants, a dining supervisor, and a service support officer. The Parent Council and the PTA play a very large part in helping to create the warm ethos which exists in the school. A busy calendar of family, social, and fundraising events is organized by the PTA. The curriculum is outstanding and fully meets pupils' needs. Imaginative and bold strategies within the Pathfinder initiative enable pupils to follow programs that are tailored to meet the wide range of different needs – OFSTED Staff are sensitive to the needs of new pupils and ensure they are well supported as they transfer to St Peter's. When pupils begin in year 7 they are placed in sets based on KS2 SATs levels and reports from their primary schools. In year 8 there is an extended setting based on ability in individual subjects. Our broad and balanced curriculum covers the full national curriculum, and pupils have the opportunity to learn Spanish and French as a modern language. In year 9 pupils at St Peter's follow a 'Pathfinder' curriculum. This has some important differences from what is usually offered at Key Stage 3. The 'Pathfinder' gives pupils at St Peter's the opportunity to choose new subjects and to begin their GCSE and Vocational courses a year early in year 9. All pupils still follow a 'core' of essential subjects. Beginning the additional courses they wish to follow in year 9 rather than year 10 allows pupils to concentrate on what they want to do and to develop greater expertise in their chosen subjects. In years 10 and 11 all pupils continue with the core of compulsory subjects and the optional subjects they have begun in year 9. The Pupil Premium was introduced by the Government in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to support pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as 'Ever 6 FSM'). Schools are encouraged by the Department for Education to use the money to 'narrow the gap' in attainment between pupils in receipt of Free School Meals or those who are 'Looked After' as nationally there is a disparity between their attainment at GCSE and their peers. The Student Council meets monthly to discuss positive changes that can be made to the school to maintain its high levels of attendance, punctuality, and behavior for all its pupils. There are two representatives from each year group who feedback the information to each form so that every pupil at St Peter’s has a voice. Sport plays an important part in the life of the school. All the pupils take part in a wide range of sporting activities both of a competitive and non-competitive nature. Pupils achieve extraordinary levels of success winning Manchester schools and Greater Manchester schools Championships at several sports every year. We have both boys and girls teams in all sports. We are regularly regional and North West champions at Athletics in several age groups. We have been playing rugby league for a few years now. The boys have won the North West schools competition for the last two years. The girls, however, have become one of the strongest schools nationally winning 3 North West titles this year and 3 national titles in the last two years. At St Peter’s lots of learning takes place in cross-curricular lessons based on a theme. Each term every class studies a different theme, some are science-based, some are historical and others have a geographical bias. Our literacy work is often based around ‘Dramatic Improvement in Writing’ themes which feedback into our creative curriculum topic. For example, our year one child read ‘Whatever Next!’ and write about baby Bear’s adventures as part of their ‘To Infinity and Beyond!’ space theme. Literacy learning focuses on children rehearsing their ideas orally through drama and speaking and listening activities to fully engage children in the writing process and develop their technical and creative writing skills. At St Peter’s we view ‘learning beyond the classroom’ as an essential part of our children’s learning and development. We realize the importance of our children making links between what they have learned in school and their local community and beyond. As such, we actively build opportunities for regular trips and visits to museums, galleries, theatres, and places of interest. We think carefully about providing our children with ‘tasters’ for a wide range of culturally enriching experiences which include: our year 6 children annually attending ballet/opera at the Royal Opera house, our KS2 children visiting a West End production each year, and taking children to eat together at a restaurant. At St Peter’s we are a ‘Sing Up’ school as we value the shared experience that collective singing brings to our children and developing their sense of community. We seek out opportunities for our children, and our school choir, to perform to an audience as well as work in partnership with other local schools through projects such as ‘Tower Voices.’ Our Music coordinator teaches music sessions linked to classes’ creative curriculum themes. In addition, our lower Key stage two classes learn to play the guitar, whilst our upper key stage two classes develop their percussion skills through learning to play the Glockenspiel. The instrumental tuition is provided by high-quality professionals from the Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education Service (THAMES). This includes opportunities for pupils to learn saxophone, keyboards, violins, and guitars after school. We, the family of St Peter’s, united in faith by God strive to learn and grow together to be the best we possibly can every day. The School Council is a very active and vocal part of the school community, who meet frequently to discuss the issues and concerns that have been raised by members of the school community. School Councillors are elected by their classmates to: Attend school council meetings and take part in discussions. Share the views of others in their class. Speak to special visitors. Be involved in different projects that the school council runs. At St Peter’s we take pride in our uniform. We want our children to look smart. The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values”. The importance of these values has been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. Protecting children from the risk of radicalization is part of St Peter’s Catholic Primary's wider safeguarding duties, and is similar to protecting children from other forms of harm and abuse. During the process of radicalization, it is possible to intervene to prevent vulnerable people from being radicalized. Radicalization refers to the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and forms of extremism. There is no single way of identifying an individual who is likely to be susceptible to an extremist ideology. It can happen in many different ways and settings. The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a duty on school staff to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. Known as the Prevent Duty. School staff should use their professional judgment in identifying children who might be at risk of radicalization or extremism and report any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead. It is important that when required as parents you return signed slips of acknowledgment by given deadlines to ensure you are fully aware and support planned events and/or have acknowledged you have received specific information. There is a weekly newsletter sent out which is a record of school life for that given week and it also gives details of clubs and other activities that are occurring for the week. By the end of Reception, most children are beginning to read and write independently and to use the number to solve written and practical problems. From year 1 onwards the curriculum includes all the subjects of the National Curriculum: English, Mathematics, Religious Education, Science, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education, ICT, and PSHCE. We teach children the importance of The Rule of Law. Children create ‘Golden Rules’ for their class at the beginning of each year. They understand that rules are there to protect everyone, to keep people safe, and to enable them to learn. Recently we have re-written our school rules together and all adults ensure they refer to the rules when they are reminding children of expectations. We have also done a lot of work on developing a fair behavior ladder so children understand the consequences involved in breaking our school ‘laws’. Pupils are encouraged to make choices within a safe and supportive environment. They are taught how to minimize risk, particularly when using the internet. Assemblies and PSHE lessons are used to promote Individual Liberty. Children learn how to make the right choices in different situations. They understand that the choices they make have an impact on others their liberty must not be at the expense of someone else’s well-being. Through the curriculum, our assemblies, and our faith, we teach the children Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs. SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School serve the parish of SS Peter and Paul and other surrounding parishes and chaplaincies. The school works with local families that are a broad mix of nationalities, languages, cultures, and faiths. SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School work in partnership with the Merton Catholic deanery schools and the Mitcham Town Co-operative Trust. The School normally admits children to Reception classes at the start of the school year. Parents have the right to request that their child attends part-time until the child reaches compulsory school age. Parents also have the right to defer entry within the same school year until the start of the term following the child’s fifth birthday. Parents whose applications for places are unsuccessful may appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel set up by section 85(3) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. Appeals must be made in writing and must set out the reasons on which the appeal is made. Appeals should be made to the Admissions Appeals Clerk at the school address. Parents/Carers have the right to make oral representations to the Appeal Panel. Any late applications will be considered by the Governors' Admissions Committee in the event of any available places being using the above categories. If all places have been filled, parents will be offered the opportunity of placing their child's name on the waiting list. This does not prevent parents from exercising their right to appeal against the decision not to offer a place. Applications for places outside the normal admissions round should be made to the London Borough of Merton on an In-Year Application Form. You should also complete a Supplementary Form which will be available from the school. This admissions procedure, although primarily relevant to children for whom a place is sought at the normal age of entry to primary education (Year R), applies also to succeeding years, subject to availability of places. The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. Pupil premium funding is available to both mainstream and non-mainstream schools, like special schools and pupil referral units. At SS Peter and Paul Religious Education is at the heart of the core curriculum. Our creative curriculum includes the National Curriculum core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, and the foundation subjects of Technology, Art, Geography, History, Music, and Physical Education (PE). Children’s progress is regularly assessed through various assessment strategies. These assessments provide accurate, accessible information regarding children’s knowledge, understanding, and skills and are part of the tools that teachers use in building their professional knowledge of each child, to identify what is needed to further each child’s knowledge and skills base. The aim is that all children reach at least the expected standard for each year, if not beyond. In addition to the prescribed subjects, we offer our children essential Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE), Relationships and Sex Education, Dance and Drama, and French. Our philosophy of preparing our children to be global citizens who uphold British and world values has led to a highlighting of national and international issues too. Through careful planning in the medium and short term, we make sure there is progression, appropriateness of level, breadth, balance, and consistency across the statutory curriculum at SS Peter and Paul.
