Anglia Ruskin is an innovative global university with students from 185 countries coming to study with us. We've been named one of the top 350 institutions in the world in The Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2018. we deliver a wide range of educational and commercial projects. Students, businesses, and partners benefit from our outstanding facilities: we have invested £100 million in the past five years and plan to invest a further £91 million over the next five years. With our facilities, activities, and events all open to the broader community, everyone benefits.
We are not only academically ambitious for ourselves but for our students. We have been named one of the top 350 institutions in the world, and joint 39th in the UK, in the Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2018, following similar success in 2017.
Additionally, 91.2% of International Students said they were happy with their life at Anglia Ruskin University. In 2017 Anglia Ruskin University participated in the International Student Barometer, which is administered by i-Graduate worldwide. The results from this international and EU student satisfaction survey reflect the opinions of new and continuing students at Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Research. The survey collects feedback on the arrival, learning, living, and support experience at ARU and a new subject for 2017 - happiness!
We are ranked in the top 20 universities for teaching excellence in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide for 2017, with six subjects in the top 10 UK higher education institutions for teaching excellence: Philosophy, Sport Science, Criminology, Sociology, Electrical, and Electronic Engineering and Business Studies.
We are purposeful, challenging, and curious about our world. The UK's higher education funding bodies have recognized our academic excellence, with 12 areas classed as generating world-leading research. We deliver impactful research which tackles pressing issues and makes a difference, from saving lives to conserving water.*
We are a place where collaboration, research, and scholarly activity informs everything we do. Each year, we help 2,000 businesses grow with interns, training, research, and collaborative programs. The industry recognizes many of our courses, and a large number are professionally accredited, making our students ready for the real world.
We pride ourselves on being as enterprising as we are innovative and nurture those qualities in our students. Our entrepreneurial excellence was once again nationally recognized when we won the Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship at the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards 2016. Our sheer can-do attitude sets us apart from others. We find that enthusiasm is infectious, letting the results speak for themselves and being the only UK university to be named a global 'rising star'.**
Anglia Ruskin's story started in 1858 when the art critic, patron, and philanthropist John Ruskin opened the Cambridge School of Art. The art school grew to become Anglia Ruskin University, and it is still at the heart of our modern-day campus in Cambridge. Over the years, several colleges and institutes have become part of Anglia Ruskin. They include the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher Education (formerly the Chelmer Institute – itself formed from the Mid-Essex Technical College and the Brentwood College of Education). At first, these colleges combined to become Anglia Polytechnic, and then Anglia Polytechnic University in 1992. We have been known as Anglia Ruskin University since 2005.
We have campuses in Chelmsford, London, and Peterborough. Our Chelmsford campus was initially in the city center but moved to a new, purpose-built site in 1992. Today, you will find our striking, modern buildings nestled by the river in the city's University and Innovation Quarter. Meanwhile, our campus at Guild House, Peterborough, opened in 2011. It is a dedicated healthcare site where we train many of our region's nurses and healthcare professionals.
We were pleased to introduce a new campus in the heart of London, where students study subjects, including business, law, and finance at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We have invested over £100 million in our campuses in recent years. Cambridge benefitted from a major redevelopment in 2011, and in 2014 we completed work on our dedicated healthcare site on Young Street. It houses state-of-the-art clinical skills labs, including mock hospital wards. Young Street is also home to our specialist Music Therapy Centre. In 2018, we opened a brand new Science Centre.
We are transforming lives through innovative, inclusive, and entrepreneurial education and research. We are determined to achieve our goals and continually strive to enhance our University for the benefit of all. We will apply our collective and individual creativity to conceive and develop new ideas, implementing them for the benefit of the communities we serve. We are bold in taking the decisions we feel are right, even when it is difficult to do so. We greatly value working collaboratively, supporting each other, and helping everyone to achieve their potential. We do what we say we will do and are fair and transparent in our decision-making and actions. We make decisions and act in a way that respects environmental, societal, and economic considerations, which best support those who study and work with us.
Our students are at the heart of our University, and we want to deliver an outstanding educational experience. To do this, we'll combine the best of face-to-face, and digital learning in all our courses, increase work-based opportunities, and offer activities that enhance academic success and employability.
Over the next ten years, we aim to maximize the impact of our research by focusing on areas of critical international and regional needs. We'll also use our research expertise to enhance our curriculum. We always strive to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural wellbeing of our region. Thus, we'll continue to build partnerships with businesses to communicate the impact of our research and open up our campuses for all to enjoy.
We will be inclusive and welcoming of all who want to study with us, measuring our success by their success. We'll have a particular focus on continuing to attract and retain international students and growing our postgraduate student communities. Building on our reputation as a good employer, we will focus on attracting and keeping the very best people we can. We aim to become a university that is greater than the sum of its parts. We will nurture the wider ARU community, including schools and colleges, alumni, and friends and supporters.
