MIPT is one of the leading Russian universities in the areas of physics and technology. The university holds a reputable position in the country and abroad in qualified graduate training. Students and graduates of MIPT are representatives of an elite circle who can fully realize their potential thanks to their interdisciplinary scientific surroundings. The strong alumni community is spread all over and includes top range scientists, business people, politicians, people of art, many of whom are awardees of prestigious international prizes. Phystech (the university) and physics (its alumni) are enormously proud and supportive. MIPT has a vibrant history. Its founders included academicians Pyotr Kapitsa, Nikolay Semenov, and Sergey Khristianovich. Its first professors were Nobel Prize winners Kapitsa, Semenov, and Lev Landau, and its first rector was Ivan Petrov. There are Nobel Prize winners among MIPT's graduates as well.
Many MIPT professors are leading Russian scientists, including over 80 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. From the outset, MIPT has used a unique system for training specialists, known as the Phystech System, which combines fundamental science, engineering disciplines, and student research. With a history rich of insignificant events and longstanding traditions, MIPT pays well-deserved attention to its symbols. MIPT has an original emblem, which embodies its devotion to science. Every five years, MIPT marks two anniversaries, celebrating the Department of Physics and Technology at Moscow State University on November 25, 1946, and creating the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, five years later.
MIPT's mission is to train leaders in science and technology to solve critical scientific and technical problems and determine the country's success and humanity in the XXI century. The mission is based on the four basic principles of the legendary Phystech system, created by our university's founders L. Landau, P. Kapitsa and N. Semenov over 60 years ago, which are:

Since 2013, MIPT involved in the federal project on increasing the competitiveness of the leading Russian universities among the world's leading research and education centers. The project aims to maximize the competitive position of a group of leading Russian universities in the global market of educational services and research programs.
The Institute of Moscow Physics and Technology is a leading Russian university providing a strong theoretical background and research opportunities in diverse scientific areas for the most talented students. Several collaborations augment the intense focus on fundamental sciences at MIPT with top-notch research institutions. All undergraduate students of MIPT become members of academic communities called Phystech Schools, each of which usually combines two departments of similar specializations. The departments are responsible for teaching the core subjects — mathematics, physics, and chemistry or informatics, depending on the specialization — while the schools provide students with research opportunities. Phystech Schools collaborate with Russia's leading industrial and IT companies, the Russian Academy of Sciences research institutes, and develop on-campus laboratories and research facilities, striving to provide students with the most relevant, in-demand, and high-quality education.
