At UAS Leiden, we have been carrying out international projects since 1994, focusing mainly on development cooperation. These projects aim to build capacity in educational institutions in developing countries through training-of-trainers (ToT) programs. With education being our core business and a significant part of our activities, we have built up knowledge and vast experience in Health Care and Peace, Justice, and Security.
Through various programs funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we cooperate with partners from developing countries by providing training and education. This way, we contribute to strengthening their capacity to train students to establish a growing qualified workforce.
In the last years, we have been active in Guatemala, South-Africa, Indonesia, Ghana, and Uganda. Our partners are universities and post-secondary training institutions in various fields. Below are some examples of recent and current projects:
In the last years, we have been active in Guatemala, South-Africa, Indonesia, Ghana, and Uganda. Our partners are universities and post-secondary training institutions in various fields. Below are some examples of recent and current projects:
Ghana, 2011-2015, NICHE/GHANA/102 - Our team Internationalisation & Diversity carries out this project and colleagues of our Education and Healthcare faculties. Lead-partner is CINOP from Den Bosch; international partners are the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST, Ghana) and Northwestern University (South-Africa). This project aims to upscale and upgrade the training of nurses and midwives in Northern Ghana to improve mother and child healthcare and, subsequently, infant and maternity mortality rates.
Uganda, NICHE/UGA/114, 2011-2015 - Our team Internationalisation & Diversity carries out this project and colleagues of our Education and Management & Business and Social Work & Applied Psychology faculties. Our external partners are the Uganda Management Institute (UMI, Uganda), University of South Africa (UNISA, South-Africa), and the Centre for International Legal Cooperation (CILC, The Hague). This project is the second phase of the "Police & Prison" project UAS Leiden carried out from 2005 - 2009. The project's goal is to build on that project and enhance the quality of teaching at the training institutions of the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) and the Uganda Police Force (UPF). One of the intended results is the accreditation of the training institutions by the Uganda National Commission on Higher Education.
University of Applied Sciences Leiden offers more than twenty Bachelor's programs and two Master's programs in the areas of Health, Social Work and Applied Psychology, Management and Business, Education, and Technology. These programs are taught in Dutch. If you are interested in enrolling in a Dutch program, you will need to know the Dutch language.
Every year, international exchange students come to the University of Applied Sciences Leiden to participate in our English-taught minors. Suppose you are an exchange student from a foreign education institution with an Erasmus or other exchange agreement. In that case, you are welcome to come to the University of Applied Sciences Leiden to take one of our English-taught minors.
For a study period, internship, or research assignment abroad, every Erasmus+ student will receive ECTS, as agreed upon in a learning agreement signed by home and host institution before departure.
Incoming students will participate in one of the English taught minors offered by UAS Leiden. General information about these minors, including the number of credits obtained for each of them, is mentioned on the website. After their mobility period, incoming students will receive a Transcript of Records.
Students from UAS Leiden going abroad receive ECTS as mentioned in the Learning Agreement and confirmed in the Transcript of Records. For a study period, students can go to one of the Erasmus+ institutional partners of UAS Leiden, found here ( pdf, 300 KB ).
Where applicable, the examination board will convert the credits obtained to the institutional grading scale, taking into account the grade distribution information from the host institution. UAS Leiden issues a Diploma Supplement to each student upon graduation in which all activities during the study period are registered. The recognized components or credits for the study period, internship, or research assignment abroad are mentioned on the student's grade list.
You can choose either a personal or an anonymous OV-chipkaart. Both cards cost € 7,50. You can buy an anonymous card at the 'Tickets & Service' desk at Leiden central train station or from an OV-chipkaart machine. For a personal OV-chipkaart, you will need to apply online or via regular post and submit a photo. Furthermore, you will need a Dutch bank account if you want a personal OV-chipkaart.
Your card can be charged at one of the OV-chipkaart machines strategically placed at train and metro stations. If you have a personal card, you can arrange for it to be charged automatically from your Dutch bank account.
You pay for your journey by swiping the card on entering and leaving the station or vehicle.
University of Applied Sciences Leiden has a buddy system for international exchange students, in which the international exchange students are linked to Dutch students doing the same study program. The buddy who is assigned to you can pick you up from the airport and escort you to your accommodation. Your buddy can also show you around our university building and Leiden city center. Depending on how well you and your buddy get along, your buddy may prove to be a good friend during your stay in Leiden.
