Aliah Universityis one of the oldest educational institutes in the country. It is located in New Town, Kolkata, and is controlled by the state government. Previously known as Mohammedan College of Calcutta, Warren Hastings established it in 1780 near Sealdah.
The institute was converted into a university in 2008. The newer buildings of the institute are situated in Taltala, Park Circus, and New Town. The science and technology department is in the New Town. The Park Circus and Taltala camps are used for Arts, Nursing, and Islamic theology. The institute was established to provide education and research facilities to students in the fields of science, technology, arts, nursing, and Islamic theology. The University offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in the subjects mentioned above.

Library
Aliah University Library* has started functioning at Salt Lake Campus since March 2010. It attempts to fulfill the faculty, research scholars, student officers, and non-teaching staff's academic and research needs. The university library system comprises 03 campuses located at Newtown, Park Circus, and Taltala. The Newtown Library deals with Engineering & Technology, Management, Pure Science, and Biological Science collection while the Park Circus library covers the collection on Humanities, Nursing, Law, Education, etc. The oldest library situated at Taltala campus has books on Islamic Theology. The library of Aliah University provides lending and reading room facilities to the members of this University.
