ZSTU is one of the main centers of mining education and science of Ukraine. It is connected first of all with the great mineral wealth of Zhytomyr and outstanding personalities who had a significant influence on the development of mining. From the start there were two departments at the faculty: “Technology of Machine Building, Metal-Cutting Machines and Instruments” and “Automation and Telemechanics.” The part-time students studied at the faculty during three years and then they had the opportunity to complete their studies at other educational institutions of Ukraine and other republics of the former Soviet Union. Later the evening and full-time departments were opened with full cycle of training. For the purpose of improving the training level of the school-leavers the preparatory courses were established.Material and technical basis of the faculty constantly increased. Existing laboratories and workshops were re-equipped and expanded, and new ones were established. A new major “Automation and Telemechanics” with full-time and evening forms of training was introduced.The first 70 students of the evening form of training obtained the degree in Mechanical Engineering.180 engineers graduated from the General Technical Faculty. It came true owing to the work of highly qualified teaching staff. By the end 98 teachers had been working at the faculty, 39 of them were Associate Professors. Research work is an integral part of both teaching and scientific activity. Despite the tough period of the faculty development, the departments were able to focus on methodological and scientific work. They managed to provide students with text-books, laboratory practice instructions, graphic tasks, etc. Special attention was paid to scientific researches and close collaboration with both industrial enterprises and scientific institutions of former USSR ZSTU successfully carried out educational activity. Both teaching skills and scientific and research work of the staff were developing. Students received highly qualified educational services. After graduation from the General-Technical Faculty students had the opportunity to complete their studies at KPI and other higher educational establishments of the former USSR. A lot of alumni of ZhGTF became leading specialists of different enterprises of Zhytomyr region. An important role in the life of the Branch was played by sports. More than 30 cups and prizes were the evidence of the achievements of Physical Education Department.The Branch teams have begun to participate in sports contests among Ukrainian educational institutions. In 1982 female volleyball players won the second place and were awarded with silver medals. One of the most popular and most beloved sports branch is basketball. So, it is natural that the team of athletes has achieved high results in this kind of sport. ZSTU is the modern educational complex with well-equipped laboratories, sport complex, tennis courts, a stadium, a refectory, a sanatorium and three halls of residence. The library and its own publishing department allow the University to provide students with educational and methodological literature. ZSTU has its own website in the Ukrainian and English languages. Local computer network is connected to the Internet. Zhytomyr Branch of KPI trained nearly 6000 highly qualified professionals whose demand in the industrial centers of Ukraine had always exceeded supply. The Branch had an authoritative teaching staff with master and doctoral academic degrees, and gradually it became a ground for highly qualified scientific personnel. Zhytomyr National Agroecological University is the only agrarian higher educational institution of ecological bias in Ukraine and the only University with National status in Zhytomyr oblast. The University is the basic institution providing the majority of national economy branches in Ukrainian Polissya with specialists (Zhytomyr, Rivne and Volyn oblasts). About 7 thousand students are studying at the University. Today, it is a big complex with developed infrastructure: 8 faculties (Agronomy, Technology of Animal Produce Production and Processing, Veterinary Medicine, Agricultural Engineering and Energetics, Ecology and Law, Forestry, Accounting and Finance, Economics and Management). 42 departments and their 85 branches on production and in scientific-research institutions. 5 scientific innovative institutes ( Institute of Economics and Agribusiness Institute of Agricultural Technologies and Land Tenure Institute of Husbandry and Veterinary Institute of Ecology and Forest Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Energy Efficiency). Cattle farm and cynology laboratory, hippotherapy centre and veterinary clinic. Scientific library. Editor-publishing centre. Developed net of public nourishment. Sports base. Within the frames of international partnership the University collaborates with Japan, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Italy, the USA, Great Britain, France, Denmark, Netherlands, Lithuania, Russia and other countries. An important direction in international activity is to provide the students with opportunity of studying advanced agricultural technologies and of organizing private businesses during their practical work on farms in Great Britain, Germany, France, Denmark, Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, the USA. The conception of national and spiritual revival is implemented in the process of specialists’ training at the University. 24 groups of amateur art activities, among them brass band, amateur theatre, students choreographic group work at the University. University students are members of combined national teams in different sports. About 50 students become prize winners at international and state competitions annually. The literature necessary for students is supplied by the university scientific library, including 8 reading rooms for 470 places. The total library fund comprises about 467 thousand of books and 94 denominations of periodical editions. Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University is the oldest and the most powerful educational institution of Zhytomyr region. Its history dates back to the famous all-male Zhytomyr gymnasium, founded in 1833, which became the basis for Volyn teacher training institute in 1919. Preserving the unique spirit of the gymnasium and its traditions, the institute took up the role the gymnasium played in public and cultural life of the Volyn region. The institute has had different names throughout its history. In 1999 Zhytomyr teacher training institute was reorganized into Zhytomyr Ivan Franko Pedagogical University to become Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University in 2004. Its more than 80-thousand army of graduates works in all corners of Ukraine as well as abroad. Among them there are famous scholars — mathematicians, physicists, biologists, geologists, linguists, historians, writers, managers of education, diplomats, politicians and state figures. Due to their activities, research and teaching achievements our university is highly valued not only in Ukraine but also far beyond its borders. The university has seen the most dynamic development during the last decade. Today University is a complex multy-structural system that includes a number of educational, scientific and industrial complexes, inter-university research centres and institutes, many libraries, local computer network, observatory, agrobiostation, dining room, cafe, buffets, publishing centre, 5 dormitories and modern sports complex. ZSU is engaged in joint work with University of Warsaw and universities of the Great Volyn, has about 40 cooperation agreements with university centers all over the world. Structurally the university comprises 3 institutes, 5 schools, and the center for pre- and post graduate education. About 8 thousand students are currently receiving their education at ZSU. The university has IV level of accreditation and trains students for all the education and qualification levels — bachelor, specialist and master. Post graduate and doctorate courses are available with more than 200 post-graduate and doctorate students currently conducting their research. There are 2 Dissertation Advisory Committees for the PhD level dissertations and a Doctorate degree Advisory Committee. 17 scientific schools, 20 scientific research centers, 30 research scientific and research methodological laboratories function at ZSU. 41 departments employ 589 staff members, including 65 Doctors of Science and 297 PhDs. The average age of the staff is 38. The university staff includes 12 Honored Educators of Ukraine, 2 Honored Scientists of Ukraine, 4 Honored Workers of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine, 2 Honored Journalists of Ukraine, 5 Honored Artists of Ukraine, 3 People’s Artist of Ukraine, 1 Honored Coach of Ukraine, dozens of laureates of the reward of the President of Ukraine, holders of the Cabinet of Ministers scholarship, winners of the NAS of Ukraine scholarships, grants of the President of Ukraine and other specialized academies. Every year about a hundred students and staff members undergo training in prestigious universities abroad, while foreign professors give lectures and conduct master classes for undergraduate, master and postgraduate students of ZSU. The programs dealing with increasing the quality of education, life and professional competence as well as the demand for university graduates among employers have been successfully realized and have proven efficient, namely — “Language Strategies”, “Inclusive Education”, “Professional Training Quality Monitoring”, “Life-long Education”, “Creative Education”, “Trade and Manual Job”. The university publishes 6 academic journals and 9 student research journals, holds dozens of international and national conferences annually. ZSU students become winners of international and national contests and competitions, win championships of Ukraine, European and World championships. Being the heralds of civil and state education management, several councils function at ZSU, namely the Council for ZSU Development, Board of Trustees, Council of Elders, Council of Doctors of Science, Gender Education Center, the Student Fellowship. It is by no chance, that ZSU has been acknowledged nationally and internationally as the “Leader of Modern Education”, “Flagship of Education and Science in Ukraine”, “The Symbol of Classical Education”. ZSU has been praised with gold, silver and bronze medals for introducing innovative education technologies and new forms of education process organization. It has been a constant winner at annual competition “My Blossoming Town” and other. As a result, according to the consolidated rating of higher educational establishments of Ukraine in 2014 (“Ukraine’s Top-200”, “Scopus”, “Webometrics”) ZSU has been 72-nd among 292 higher education institutions of Ukraine. It has become one of the “Top-10” universities of Central Ukraine.
