In 1866, a very young boy called Frederick Binks walked into the newly built Wesley College on St Kilda Road and made history by becoming our first pupil. Binks spent several lonely nights in the boarding house until other boys started arriving a few days later. He could never have imagined the Wesley College, which we know today – the leading and innovative, co-educational-educational, multi-campus institution with a student population of more than 3,150. And yet, if we revisit the Prospectus and Annual Report for Wesley College Melbourne 1866, we find that the original educational objectives of Binks’ day still have great resonance: “The object of this Institution is to provide a Classical and General Education of the highest order, such as to fit a young gentleman for mercantile life, for the public service, and matriculation in the University.”Later, “The College will be conducted upon the principles of the Wesleyan Church, the constant aim being to give a liberal and Christian education.” Our Junior Schools are based on small homerooms, with specialist prior years teachers who know their students well. The Junior School includes Early Learning programs for three and four-year-olds, focusing on the growth of the developing child. Students learn within the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), complemented by Reggio Emilia principles – an approach to education that views children as active learners who acquire knowledge through inquiry-based learning. The Programme is focused on building our students’ conceptual understanding and skills to excel in their learning and for their personal growth and understanding of the world. Middle School provides opportunities for young adolescents to learn and grow to respect and acknowledge this critical phase of their lives. The focus of the Primary Years Programme continues through Years 5 and 6. This leads naturally into our unique middle-year curriculum (Years 7–9), which provides the perfect broad pathway to senior studies. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) builds on the knowledge and skills developed through the IB PYP, emphasizing students’ spiritual, emotional, and social growth to support well-rounded individuals. Academic subjects focus on fundamental knowledge, skills, and understanding and provide students with opportunities to express their ideas and follow the questions raised by their intellectual curiosity. Senior School students are engaged in diverse learning experiences to ensure they develop to their fullest potential as knowledgeable, skilled, and productive individuals. The curriculum focuses on providing the students with the information and experiences they need to make informed choices about their future. Often this will involve exploring different subjects and ideas, with guidance from staff and our experienced careers counselors. In Year 10, students study a core group of subjects that give a solid grounding in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and Physical and Health Education, combined with a variety of elective subjects. If we do one thing right, it breaks the stereotypes of homeless people or people with disabilities. Getting our students to participate with people who are outside their norm. We take Christ as our model. Edmund Rice imitated the values of Christ and put them into practice the way Jesus lived his values. Our job is to give these values to the boys to use and apply them in their own lives. Geraldine has made that active practice very contemporary so that students are confronting issues in our contemporary society. We try to give the students the idea that their spiritual wellbeing is essential. There is more to this world than material goods. Retreats, focus days, immersion days to places like the Holocaust Museum demonstrate to the students what can happen to people when values go astray. Our students see Social Justice as the practical way they can live out their faith. They get it; they get that Christianity is tied with action and that without action, it is vacuous. During Religious Education classes, they will discuss the model of Christ and Edmund Rice, which is all about looking after the marginalized, caring for people who do not have what they have. For example, when the students will go into the community to feed the homeless or visit Aboriginal communities, they understand what living their faith is all about. Waverley Christian College seeks to offer students a quality Christian education experience. Our academic standards, facilities, and Christian values help ensure that students attending the College will experience academic success and a spiritual, social, emotional, and physical blessing. It is known for its VCE students' academic performance - the majority of whom gain entry each year into the university programs of their choice. The curriculum at Waverley Christian College is taught from a Biblical perspective, and Christian values provide the foundation for all aspects of the College program. Founded in 1978, the College relocated to its present site in Wantirna South in 1989. The College has experienced steady growth over this time with around 1300 students, with approximately 650 children enrolled in the Kindergarten and the Primary School and 650 students enrolled in the Secondary School. In 2012, the College commenced operations at a new campus in Narre Warren South, with approximately 150 students, initially offering classes from Prep to Year 7. Enrolments have grown to around 650 in 2017, with the Secondary School extending to Year 12. The College is a ministry of CityLife Church, a pentecostal style local church with a multi-site congregation of around ten thousand.
