    University of Valencia

Our University, founded over five centuries ago by the Juries of Valencia, has become a modern, public university that teaches all areas of knowledge: social, economic, and legal sciences, experimental sciences, engineering, health sciences, educational sciences, and humanities. More than 45,800 undergraduate students and 8,600 postgraduate students take classes taught by more than 3,300 professors, lecturers, and researchers (Blasco Ibáñez, Burjassot-Paterna, and Tarongers) with the support of over 1,700 administration and service staff. You can find all the information about our University on this website: its facilities, centers, departments, research institutes, and services. You can also learn about all the activities that the University undertakes: teaching, research, creation, and dissemination of culture, knowledge transfer to the public and private sector, international cooperation, and solidarity. This community is committed to remaining a reference within the university framework ─ we are ranked second in Europe in receiving Erasmus students and fourth among Spanish universities in the research field. According to the most prestigious international rankings, we are ranked fourth in Spain. We hope we can count on you in our ongoing effort to make a better, fairer, and more developed society. A more sustainable and advanced society, which encourages equality among men and women and provides a higher life quality for citizens. The mission of the Universitat de València sets out the raison d’être of the Institution, according to the legal and statutory framework. The strategic planning process is undertaken to define the Strategic Plan of the Universitat de València 2008-2011 resulted in the definition of the University's mission. We understand that this statement remains fully active, although their achievement will require different objectives and action lines that focus on new challenges and circumstances. "The Universitat de València's mission is to train competent professionals at the European level and encourage prestigious research with global impact contributing to our society's development. Training and research promote UV's tasks in the field of dissemination of science and culture, and the reaffirmation of the democratic values of the society in general, and the Valencian society in particular." The University of Valencia of today is the outcome of more than five centuries of history that have led to the accumulation of knowledge and unique documentary treasures, making it one of the top Spanish universities. In the thirteenth century, higher education was established in Valencia's city thanks to King James I of Aragon, who had obtained a Studium Generale institution from Pope Innocent IV in 1245. However, it was not until 30 October 1499 that the Juries of Valencia drew up the Constitutions of what was about to become the first University of Valencia: a university authorized by the Papal Bull on 23 January 1501, signed by the Valencian Pope Alexander VI and by the royal privilege of Ferdinand II the Catholic. It was granted on 16 February 1502. For more than 500 years, the University of Valencia's development has run in parallel with the city's development. It has been an inextricable part of its urban fabric, creating spaces for teaching, research, creation and dissemination of culture and science, and knowledge transfer. Initially dedicated to the studies of medicine, humanities, theology, and law, the University has witnessed an accelerated process of transformation and growth over the past two decades, something incomparable to earlier periods. This significant effort has turned the University of Valencia into a modern, global university. It has become a leader when it comes to the application of new technologies, connected to critical international scientific and teaching networks. The University of Valencia has become one of the top five scientific centers in Spain thanks to its commitment to excellence and the wide range of teaching and research activities offered in all areas of knowledge (basic sciences and engineering, health sciences, educational sciences, humanities and social sciences, economics, and law). This document, set for public exposure, shows the Universitat's action plan's objectives and priorities for the period 2016‐2019. Regarding the content, the UV Strategic Plan (PEUV 2016‐2019) maintains the four-strategy plan, which corresponds to our Universitat's activity fields, namely: teaching research campus life and participation transference and innovation. For each of these strategies, the Institution, through a shared resource base, deals with a broad and heterogeneous group of collectives and specific and differentiated needs. These four strategies are defined in terms of general institutional objectives for their achievement; there are specific strategic objectives. The lines of the strategic actions will be defined on the later ones, a set of re-grouped initiatives to achieve a specific result within this PEUV. Regarding the elaboration process, the development of the PEUV 2016‐2019 results from a collaborative process in which we have capitalized on our previous experiences and acquired knowledge throughout the eight years of PEUV's life. At the Universitat de València, strategies are thought of as vivid plans, as a journey in which the Institution tries to fulfill its objectives simultaneously. It explores and learns new possibilities and better ways of adding value to society. Hence, after the necessary prospective studies, and to capitalize on this learning, the development of this plan has counted on the participation of a broad group of members of the university community. Around 50 people have contributed to it. They were distributed into specialized working groups that have tackled the definition of the different elements included in the strategy and the different fields. The conjunction of all these contributions has allowed the definition of a realistic and change-promoter strategy for the current context.
  4. With almost 50 years of experience behind us, we were the first non-public University established in the Comunitat Valenciana, the Valencia region. The University, privately run but at the general public's service, has always stood out for its pioneering character, achieving several 'firsts.' The first University in Valencia offered programs in areas such as pharmacy, journalism, and veterinary medicine. The first to offer dual degrees. The first to establish the role of the personal university tutor. The first to offer professional development grants during degree studies. The first to establish a new understanding of what a university should be. An innovative development strategy has turned CEU UCH into the most international University in the region. More than a quarter of students at the University are from abroad (26%), and the University has a clear focus on preparing our students for today's globalized world. Today, we have students from more than 70 countries on campus. Another first. The CEU Cardenal Herrera University has three campuses: Castellón, Elche, and Alfara del Patriarca (Valencia). It is an innovative university which offers 20 Bachelor's Degree programs (grades) and more than 60 postgraduate programs at the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Faculty of Law, Business and Political Science, the Technical School of Design, Architecture, and Engineering (ESET), and the Faculty of the Humanities and Communication Sciences. The University forms part of the Fundación Universitaria San Pablo CEU – the CEU San Pablo University Foundation. The Foundation is the largest privately-owned educational institution in Spain and the only one which operates three universities. Our view of education derives from Christian humanism values, which form the basis of our vocation for a personalized approach to education, which can be most clearly seen in our tutoring and integration programs. These values drive our commitment to society, which can be seen in our wide-ranging grant programs and pioneering academic volunteering initiatives and community services at both a national and international level. They also form the basis of our involvement in encouraging valuable research to take place. In both technical and human terms, this research contributes to the improvement of the society in which we live. These values are our values because the Foundation was established by the Asociación Católica de Propagandistas (ACP). In the 20th century, this association, founded by lay Catholics, established essential media companies and the Spanish charity organization Caritas España. This group of people played an essential role in Spain's peaceful political process in its transition to becoming a democratic country. The association consists of a group of committed, proactive people who have undertaken a series of not-for-profit educational initiatives to improve society.
  5. Universitat Politècnica de València is much more than the cover letter of our institution. It is an incredibly useful working tool and an essential aid for students. Its portals provide high-quality information and a wide range of services accessible from a variety of mobile devices. The result is an intuitive and functional web, universal and direct, the best reflection of what we want to be as a university. Universities are called to play a fundamental role in this "knowledge-intensive society" in which we are immersed. A more dynamic society than ever before, where the capacity to adapt becomes more and more necessary. To adapt successfully, it seems essential that what is needed is a mediated and tiered reorientation of our capabilities towards the necessities of tomorrow. The Universitat Politècnica de València is an institution with the capacity to take the lead in these changes and the meeting of the demands which face us, characteristics which underline its excellent value but which also mean the adoption of specific organizational and functional processes, all of which justified the need to draw up a new Strategic Plan, as a tool for the management of the institution, the definition of lines of action, and to support decision-making. Planning guarantees flexibility in the face of change, a guarantee of coherent evolution, both for our internal operations and equally to ask society what we consider fair for the University. Suppose we are to request coherently the role which the University deserves to play and the treatment it must receive. In that case, it requires that every one of its members puts in the day-to-day effort to do an excellent job to the best of our abilities. The 2015-2020 Strategic Plan was drawn up in two phases: firstly, the mission, vision, and shared values of the university community, which must characterize our institution, were specified secondly, a strategy concerning the basis of the challenges and projects was defined, duly accompanied by the deadlines and timescales and by a framework of responsibility and indicators connected to its accomplishment, all of this to ensure that it is in line with the corresponding annual budget. It is conceived with a philosophy of continual review. It is a dynamic document which will be revised each year and which specifies the schedule of activities for each year, given that both the institution and the society it serves are immersed in a permanent process of change, which will no doubt alter the current circumstances in which the Plan was developed. The Universitat Politècnica de València educates people in order to enhance their skills researches and generates knowledge, with the assurance of quality, rigor, and ethics, in the fields of science, technology, art, and business, to further the integral development of society and contribute to its technical, economic and cultural progress. The UPV is a public, dynamic, and innovative institution that is dedicated to researching and teaching. The UPV maintains strong bonds with its social environment and a strong presence abroad. Our vocation as a service results from our commitment to society. We provide our students with the knowledge they need to work as graduates in their professional field. We offer them an all-round education where they acquire technological skills and humanistic and cultural education. We train people, and we train professionals because we believe we must give our students knowledge and experience. By so doing, we believe that we are helping them become free, responsible people aware of social problems, are capable of taking on commitments and have prospects for the future. The teaching and administrative staff engaged by the UPV work to offer our students the high-quality education they need.

As such, he represents the UPV in all sorts of official acts and transactions. He is responsible for the University's government and management, develops the lines of action previously approved by the collegiate bodies, and carries out their agreements. The Rector is also responsible for all competencies not expressly conferred on other government bodies. Training and research promote UV's tasks in the field of dissemination of science and culture, and the reaffirmation of the democratic values of the society in general, and the Valencian society in particular." In the framework of the UV's mission, and once its scope of activity (teaching, research, transfer, and culture) has been defined, it is possible to explain the purpose of the Institution in terms of goals that define and qualify our available services and fix the milestones we want to achieve within the timeframe of this Strategic Plan 2012-2015. The Universitat de València wants to be recognized in the future for: Being an institution of higher education with a quality, comprehensive, and international academic offer, which is open to everyone and covers permanent training needs throughout the different stages of users' life cycle. The ability to provide comprehensive guidance to their students, as embodied in the quality of the undergraduate experience at the Universitat de València, is a qualification that enhances graduates' employability. The volume and impact of research results generated by its teams. The ability to capture specialized research resources: attracting and developing talent and concurring in international competitive calls. The ability to offer a wide variety of transfer and scientific-technical services, through visible and accessible processes, easily understood by current and potential users. The ability to create stable relationships with users of transfer services and offer them comprehensive solutions beyond specific transactions. The amplitude, quality, and richness of its offer of culture and participation in university life contribute to a 'UV's experience' that meets users' needs. Being a cultural reference in the Valencian society, with particular attention to its culture and language. From this view, the goals of the Institution in each of the four areas of activity and the strategic objectives that allow achieving the stated goals can be identified. Thus, the UV's Strategic Plan for the period 2012-2015 is set. Every Institution has a culture based on an ensemble of values that permeate the principles that regulate its actions. The UV values have been shaped throughout history, and they have been reflected in the University Constitution. The presentation of the UV values aims to set out a solid reference framework that guides the Institution's behavior and attitudes that influence its decisions and how it performs its activities. They constitute the main .concepts that articulate the different environments of the University Social Responsibility (USR) of the UV. Thus, the values that permeate the actions of the UV and that serve as a basis for the development of the Strategic Plan 2012-2015 are the following: Identity commitment. The UV is an institution deeply rooted in the territory and linked to the Valencian reality. Therefore it pays special attention to the protection and promotion of its culture and language and the study of all the cultural manifestations of its immediate cultural and territorial environment. Excellence in the development of all our teaching activities, research, transference, and cultural dissemination. This value is specified in our commitment to quality, assessment, and continuous improvement. Innovation. The UV accomplishes its intellectual leadership vocation from its rationality and universality principles by facilitating, stimulating, and hosting intellectual and critical activities in every knowledge and learning field. Social and economic progress, resulting in the UV's commitment to nations' intellectual and material development and knowledge advancement. Transparency in the management and open dialogue with society promotes participation, trust, and commitment to the Institution. To facilitate the internal communication and mutual knowledge between the different groups of interest that form the university community to make possible the harmonious development of the knowledge addressed to enhance people's skills and coexistence in a plural and democratic society. Justice, resulting in equal rights and opportunities for everyone, without discrimination caused by race, gender, opinion, language or religious reasons, or any other social or personal condition or circumstance. Regarding internal policy, the UV promotes positive reinforcement measures for equal participation of all members of the Institution and advocates in favor of its language and culture, which are the heart of its identity. Positive actions for people with disabilities are also promoted in order for them to have a full and satisfactory university life. Equality. The UV performs its functions and activities (teaching, research, culture, and management) under equal opportunities for men and women. It develops and applies this through the corresponding 'Equality Plan.' Solidarity and cooperation with different groups of interest with which the Institution interacts in the social, cultural, economic, and academic environment. In the academic environment, the UV is committed to creating opportunities and equal conditions for most people (the social dimension of higher education). Likely, the UV cooperates with other universities and academic institutions, with particular attention to the Valencian universities and the ones belonging to the Catalan linguistic area, included in the network of the current Joan Lluís Vives Institute. Sustainability The UV serves the ecological and environmental defense and promotes and applies active measures to protect and improve the university community members' health. The Institution develops this value by applying the twenty-five policies included in the "Sustainable Campus. Education and Research for Sustainability" program. The mentioned values serve to support the strategy's approach and the success key factors whereby the UV aims to achieve its goals in the different fields to which its activities are related.
  8. View full university

In the framework of the UV's mission, and once its scope of activity (teaching, research, transfer, and culture) has been defined, it is possible to explain the purpose of the Institution in terms of goals that define and qualify our available services and fix the milestones we want to achieve within the timeframe of this Strategic Plan 2012-2015. 10. The Rector is the highest academic authority at the University. As such, he represents the UPV in all sorts of official acts and transactions. He is responsible for the University's government and management, develops the lines of action previously approved by the collegiate bodies, and carries out their agreements. The Rector is also responsible for all competencies not expressly conferred on other government bodies. If we are to request the role coherently the University deserves to play and the treatment it must receive, it requires that each of its members puts in the day-to-day effort to do an excellent job to the best of our abilities. 12. View full university
