The Universitat Jaume I (UJI) is a public university in the north of the Valencian Community, a region on the European Mediterranean coast located among Valencia, Barcelona, and Madrid. Established in 1991, the UJI has positioned itself as a friendly university characterized by its attention, smooth-running management procedures, and the high levels of participation of its members in university life, due, among other things, to its convenient size, with about 15,000 students, and its integrated, modern, functional and sustainable campus. The close relationship among lecturers and students at the Universitat Jaume I enables lecturers to reach a level of educational excellence that guarantees a clearly defined educational model based on lifelong learning, integral education, and active participation in social progress based on the foundations of peaceful, equitable, supportive relationships and respect for the environment. Founded when the information society was fully immersed in the process of consolidation, the Universitat Jaume I's development has been marked by advances in information and communication technologies (ICT). For this reason, the application of ICT in learning and research processes and university management has always featured at the Universitat Jaume I, to the point that it was a pioneer in this field with initiatives such as the creation of the first Spanish web server or the first Centre for Education and New Technologies in Spain. The quality management is undertaken at the Universitat Jaume I both in the teaching sphere. The administration and delivery of services are based on procedures in line with the most demanding international standards. The links that the UJI maintains with the business and institutional sectors and with the general community in Castelló are also very close. The strategic planning process is undertaken to define the Strategic Plan of the Universitat de València 2008-2011 resulted in the definition of the University's mission. The UV accomplishes its intellectual leadership vocation from its rationality and universality principles by facilitating, stimulating, and hosting intellectual and critical activities in every knowledge and learning field. Social and economic progress, resulting in the UV's commitment to nations' intellectual and material development and knowledge advancement. Transparency in the management and open dialogue with society promotes participation, trust, and commitment to the Institution. To facilitate the internal communication and mutual knowledge between the different groups of interest that form the university community to make possible the harmonious development of the knowledge addressed to enhance people's skills and coexistence in a plural and democratic society. Justice, resulting in equal rights and opportunities for everyone, without discrimination caused by race, gender, opinion, language or religious reasons, or any other social or personal condition or circumstance. Regarding internal policy, the UV promotes positive reinforcement measures for equal participation of all members of the Institution and advocates in favor of its language and culture, which are the heart of its identity. Positive actions for people with disabilities are also promoted in order for them to have a full and satisfactory university life. Equality. The UV performs its functions and activities (teaching, research, culture, and management) under equal opportunities for men and women. It develops and applies this through the corresponding 'Equality Plan.' Solidarity and cooperation with different groups of interest with which the Institution interacts in the social, cultural, economic, and academic environment. In the academic environment, the UV is committed to creating opportunities and equal conditions for most people (the social dimension of higher education). Sustainability The UV serves the ecological and environmental defense and promotes and applies active measures to protect and improve the university community members' health. UPF is a public, international, and research-intensive university that, in just twenty-five years, has earned a place for itself among the best universities in Europe. Awarded with a CEI label (International Excellence Campus) by the Spanish Ministry of Education, the University also figures in some of the most influential rankings. On 18 June 1990, Catalan Parliament gave the go-ahead to create a new public university in Catalonia, Pompeu Fabra University, inspired by freedom, democracy, justice, equality, independence, and plurality. From its beginnings, this young academic institution set itself two main objectives: to train responsible professionals and citizens fully committed to civic values and contribute to the development of outstanding research. The first lectures at UPF were given on 8 October 1990 in Balmes building, once the Fòrum Vergés. They were attended by around 300 students of the new degrees in Law and Economics and Business Sciences. Today, UPF offers its studies around three areas of knowledge: the social sciences and humanities, the health and life sciences, and the ITC and communication sciences. To develop its activity, the University has been structured into seven schools, a Polytechnic School, and eight departments. Meanwhile, in recent years UPF has also participated in institutions and specialized centers focused on teaching, research, and transfer activities, centers with legal personality, and the UPF Group. Moreover, to promote research and transfer activities undertaken by university researchers and provide them with greater international visibility, the University has developed the UPF Research Park in social sciences, humanities, communication, and information technologies. The UPF Research Park, which develops its activity at Ciutadella and Poblenou campuses, coordinates its activities in health and life sciences with the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, located at Mar campus. Thus, thanks to the development of these three campuses and science parks, the University has contributed to the regeneration of some areas in Barcelona and the promotion of new areas of creation and transfer of knowledge. Examples of this activity can be found, for example, in the rehabilitation of the Dipòsit de Les Aigües, the current Library, or the former army barracks in Wellington Street, nowadays occupied by the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and the Pasqual Maragall Foundation (Ciutadella campus). Through the opening to the sea in the nineties, with the Olympics and the regeneration of the Vila Olímpica (Mar campus) or the regeneration of Ca l'Aranyó, the old textile factory placed in 22@ (Poblenou campus). We should neither forget the building in plaça de la Mercè, headquarter of the Rector's office, in Ciutat Vella the Born building, that hosts the UPF Foundation, or the Balmes building UPF Barcelona School School of Management, among others.
