We are a community school in The London Borough Of Richmond Upon Thames, a three-form entry primary school with an excellent reputation for providing fun and happiness, combined with high standards of education, going back many, many years. Our latest OFSTED inspection and our consistently strong annual results show a school that records outstanding educational achievement and a high level of value add across the board.
Children are admitted to the school in the Autumn Term of the school year in which they have their 5th birthday. Following home visits during the first week of the Autumn term children will attend school full time (9.00 am-3.15 pm). Children whose birthday falls between 1 April and 31 August may delay entry into school until January if their parents wish.
There are regular visits for prospective parents please contact the school to find out when the next available tour is. The tour lasts approximately one hour where you will be shown a DVD about the school, then taken around the school to see the staff and children in our stimulating school environment. Appointments can be made by contacting the school office and everyone is welcome. At East Sheen Primary School we are committed to planning and delivering an exciting and stimulating broad-based curriculum for all our pupils. English and mathematics are central aspects of the primary curriculum but we recognize the importance of computing, science and design, and technology in preparing children for today's world. We also fully value the importance of the ‘Arts’ in enriching our children's learning through creative studies and the importance of inquiry through history and geography. Our emphasis on sport and healthy eating encourages our children to keep active and make the right choices to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Our curriculum is designed to develop a curiosity and a love for learning, to foster and develop imagination, investigation, and independence. This ethos is woven into everything we do with our children, through well-structured lessons and learning experiences, which lead to confident, enthusiastic learners, well prepared for secondary education, and the changing pace and challenges of modern life.
Our Governing Body is committed to helping the Headteacher, Elizabeth Page, and her team, provide the best possible educational environment. Governors work in strong co-operation with the teaching staff and are currently implementing long term plans for the improvement of the whole school environment, to bring all our classrooms up to a high standard. We have recently undergone a major building project as part of the expansion to three form entries and are delighted with the quality of all our classrooms. The dining room and large new hall are at the center of the school community. We have an all-weather playing field to provide a fantastic year-round outdoor facility.
Working in partnership with our PTA, we have installed an exciting climbing frame, trim trail, and outdoor learning spaces. Our PTA is exceptionally active and has raised substantial funds over the years to help with these and many other improvements.
Formative assessment is used daily and is the judgment teachers make regarding the progress and learning of each child. Such assessment is made using a range of information, including questioning and answering, observations, marking of work, dialogue, peer, and self-assessments. Summative assessment in the form of written tests is also used to track pupil progress. Assessment is key to ensuring pupils make progress and is the starting point for the planning of each lesson.
At East Sheen Primary School we use a tool called “Target Tracker” to monitor children’s progress and attainment as they move through school. Children are assessed against the national curriculum objectives as they are taught each year group curriculum. Teachers make a judgment as to when they are confident that a child has a secure understanding of each objective and use a color code to record this.
Safeguarding is the highest priority in school. It is also a huge area, covering child protection, online safety, site security, health and safety, evacuation, lockdown, anti-bullying, radicalization, racism, female genital mutilation, and more. All employees have annual training and regular updates to make sure knowledge and understanding of safeguarding are current. We ensure all those who are contracted at school (e.g. cleaners, school meal providers, sports providers, supply teachers) have undergone police checks and are legally entitled to work in the UK and that any adults working directly with children have had appropriate safeguarding training.
