The SCAD Collaborative Learning Center, or CLC, partners with businesses, brands, and organizations to research and solve challenging problems by drawing on top students and professors' talents. From design-based concepts and solutions through SCAD's sponsored projects to in-depth learning opportunities through executive education, industry partnerships at SCAD promote authentic, real-world collaborations among business professionals, students, and faculty. The Department of University Safety exists to ensure the safest learning environment possible through a layered and comprehensive security approach, backed by experienced leadership. SCAD works closely with local police, fire, emergency personnel, and state and federal agencies to ensure that students have a safe and open college experience. LiveSafe is a free smartphone app that turns every student's phone into a personal safety device. Using a smartphone's GPS, students can report suspicious activity in real-time by snapping photos, recording videos, or submitting anonymous safety concerns. A complete crime prevention program offers the SCAD community members a toolkit to identify and navigate safety issues. Through BeeSafe, you can learn tips to avoid risk in online buy, sell, and trade from online marketplaces in a staffed location with SafeTrade and reduce your exposure to crime with HomeCheck.SCAD is ready if a crisis occurs. We have established a comprehensive notification system to communicate with students and families promptly. This includes the SCAD Alert System, online notifications, television reports, radio messages, and more. We are dedicated to ensuring effective, open, and appropriate response. At SCAD, we want you to succeed — and our student services department provides numerous resources to help you adjust to university life and maximize your SCAD experience. SCAD eLearning staff members assist students with all aspects of online education. They serve as a link between traditional university locations and online students living all around the world.SCAD Card is a multifunctional identification card with a magnetic strip encoded like a credit or ATM card. Not only is your SCAD Card your ID, but it also may be used as a debit card at SCAD facilities and with retailers. Licensed counselors are available to assist students with short-term individual counseling, group counseling and educational workshops, community referrals, and self-help resources. Also, SCAD offers more than 70 minors and certificate programs and access to learning centers worldwide. Most programs are offered in multiple locations, so you can start in one place and finish in another. The Savannah College of Art and Design was founded in 1978 by Richard G. Rowan, Paula Wallace, May L. Poetter and Paul E. Poetter provide college degree programs not previously available in southeast Georgia and create a specialized professional art college to attract students from throughout the United States and abroad. The curriculum was established with dual goals of excellent arts education and adequate career preparation for students. Today, with multiple locations and online distance education offerings, SCAD assiduously adhere to these goals. SCAD was legally incorporated in the state of Georgia on Sept. 29, 1978. A board of trustees was established, and the search was begun for a competent faculty and an appropriate facility. In 1979, SCAD purchased and renovated the Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory to serve as the first classroom and administration building. The historical significance of the 1892 structure was recognized by its nomination for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Named Poetter Hall in honor of two founders, the building remains in active use by SCAD today. University Village, a campus apartment complex, is the top choice for upper-level students. The primary goal is to ensure equal access to all aspects of the college experience for students with disabilities through reasonable accommodation. Savannah State University (SSU) is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in Savannah. The school was established in 1890 due to the Second Morrill Land Grant Act, which mandated that southern and border states develop land-grant colleges for black citizens. Later that year, the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation creating the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youths, which served as Georgia's 1890 land-grant institution until 1947. A preliminary session of the Georgia State Industrial College was held in the Baxter Street School Building in Athens, Ga., before moving to Savannah in October 1891. Richard R. Wright, Sr., was appointed the first president of the institution in 1891, which opened with five faculty members and eight students. The college awarded its first degree in 1898 to Richard R. Wright, Jr., the founding president's son, and became the ninth president of Wilberforce University. Cyrus G. Wiley of 1902 was the first alumnus to become college president in 1921, the same year the first female students were admitted as residents on campus. In 1928, the college became a four-year, degree-granting institution, ending its high school and regular school programs. Savannah State continues to engage in groundbreaking research. SSU sent cutting-edge genetic material from campus laboratories to the International Spaces Station (ISS) in 2014. Savannah State had also earned two patents in 2016. One allows for the collection and harvest of organic material necessary for long-distance space travel. The other is a new chemical that has implications for treating Alzheimer's, ALS, and dementia. SSU is expanding its facilities with two new science and technology buildings. The University purchased property on Livingston Avenue, where a new 17,000 square foot marine sciences laboratory is being constructed. Work is underway on the main campus on a new two-story, 30,000 square foot building to house engineering technology and chemistry laboratories. Doubling its enrollment from 2001-2011, Savannah State is now home to an increasingly diverse student body of more than 4,900.
