Our Primary School is located at 7 Attwood Way, in the beachside suburb of Rockingham, close to public transport. Our Adolescent Program campus is co-located on the Murdoch University Campus on the Dixon road Rockingham site. Our Infant-Toddler Program is located in Baldivis on 13 Fifty Road. Rockingham Montessori School currently has approximately 140 children attending our seven Primary classrooms, 30 students in our Adolescent Program, and a further 60 children attending our Infant-Toddler Program. Rockingham Montessori School has a small, close-knit community, and students benefit from low student to teacher ratios. Rockingham Montessori School, formerly known as Rockingham Family School, was established in February 1985 by a group of dedicated parents and Elizabeth Sugars, the school leader and founder. Elizabeth inspired all by keeping the “T.E.A.M. Spirit” foremost in everyone’s mind, “T.E.A.M” being an acronym for “together everybody achieves more.” The school started in a small house in Safety Bay. This school’s success brought about the planning of a new school, and in 1988, the school on Attwood way was built. The original parents moved on, and in 1998 those parents who had their children at the school chose to adopt the Montessori philosophy in its entirety. This is unique, as most Montessori schools grow with their children. Montessori trained staff were employed, Montessori materials and equipment bought, and programs put in place at the start of 1999. In 2012 our Adolescent Program commenced, and in 2013 our school was registered to deliver a comprehensive Montessori education program from 3 years of age through to 17 years of age. Imagine walking into a classroom and not finding the teacher standing in front of a whiteboard shouting out to the class children. Looking around, you notice that some children are quietly working away, totally absorbed with the task at hand, others are working together in groups, another child is washing the dishes, and some are enjoying a bit of a chit chat around the snack table. You would expect it to be noisy, but only a soft humming greets your ears. The children speak ever so softly, and upon listening closer, you will hear questions like “Can I show you how to do that?” or “Would you like to join me?” The politeness would not seem congruent with young children, but their genuine desire to help one another is ever-present. Quietly the teacher and education assistant move amongst the children, stopping by each one to help with their current job or teach them a new and more advanced job. “Where are you?” you might ask yourself. You’ve found yourself inside a Montessori school where school tasks are labeled as “work,” and teachers are not preaching but giving every child their undivided attention, nurturing and educating them through each new piece of work. Praise and encouragement can be heard not only from the teachers but from the children themselves. If a friend struggles with a task, it is not uncommon to hear a little voice start-up offering support and advice. Children choose the work they would like to do; thus, they are taught responsibility, and they display pride upon completion of the work. You will even find that the children motivate themselves to attempt new work with an “I can do it” attitude.
