Monmouth School Girls’ Prep is an independent day and boarding preparatory school for girls aged 7-11 years. We are part of the Haberdashers’ Foundation, and, as a group in Monmouth, have recently celebrated 400 years of providing an excellent education for girls and boys. Situated amongst glorious countryside: the Wye Valley, the Black Mountains, and the Brecon Beacons, Monmouth School Girls’ Prep is well placed to offer girls an inspiring education in uplifting surroundings. We share the marvelous facilities of Monmouth School for Girls and this, coupled with the warm, supportive environment of our Prep school, enables girls to flourish and achieve their potential. With small class sizes, excellent teachers, and strong pastoral care, we are ambitious for our girls, not just academically, but also on the sports, music, and creative arts fronts. Girls join the school-aged 7 in a two-class intake. Many of these girls will have moved up from Monmouth Schools Pre-Prep, but we also have a strong number of girls from a range of other schools. Entrance is via an assessment morning where we look not only at academic ability but also for girls who have the potential to benefit from what we have to offer and who will later thrive in our Senior school, where the majority of girls will continue aged 11. To ensure that the transition to the senior school is smooth, girls are taught some lessons by senior school staff, enabling us, in particular, to offer sports coaching by teachers who are themselves, performers, and coaches, at the national and international level. Access to facilities such as the DT suite means girls can develop an interest in technical subjects at an early stage. We have a Learning Support Department which helps girls overcome difficulties in individual subjects. We believe strongly that girls learn best academically in a single-sex environment where distractions are fewer and we can bring out the best in them. However, due to our special relationship with our parallel prep school Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, we can offer many opportunities for boys and girls to socialize and learn together. Swimming galas, concerts, choirs, quizzes, discos, and much more, all provide a chance for the girls to learn to manage friendships. Our principal aim is to enable girls to grow and develop in a happy, caring environment. Monmouth School for Boys was founded in 1614 by William Jones, a member of the Haberdashers’ Company of London. As we now prepare our pupils for the opportunities of the 21st Century we are proud of our unbroken history and Christian heritage. The generous bequest of William Jones has underpinned our development and enables us to keep our fees extremely competitive. Monmouth School Boys’ Prep provides the friendliness and closes pastoral care of a small school with the outstanding resources of its senior school, Monmouth School for Boys. Boys gain experience in a wide range of subjects and the curriculum is supplemented by a vibrant extra-curricular program. Boys aged 7-11, with boarding from 7 Monmouth School Boys’ Prep provides a secure and safe environment for boys aged 7 to 11 years. It provides an excellent academic grounding in all core subjects with a varied curriculum including Languages, Art, Drama, Music, and Sport. We have specialist subject teachers to introduce your son to Science, Physical Education, and Music, with the opportunity to try a wind or string instrument. Just as importantly, we are a school that cares. We believe that students need to feel comfortable and secure to learn and, as a school, we put as much emphasis on creating a supportive and happy environment as we do on academic success. We achieve both. In 1903 the Haberdashers’ Company erected an Elementary School in Monmouth, which was known as the Jones Endowed School. In 1948 this became Monmouth Secondary School. The school became fully comprehensive in 1977, catering for the age range 11-19, and it has grown considerably since this time. There were 1649 students on roll in September 2012, of whom 354 were Sixth Formers. There were 116 full and part-time members of teaching staff and 36 support staff. The School is situated between the old road to Ross and the town by-pass and faces the pleasant wooded slope of the Kymin. The buildings and playing fields occupy a site of approximately 19 acres. The buildings are in eight main groups. The School Library and Information Resource Centre are open throughout the day and available for all students at breaktime, lunchtime, and after school. It closes at 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday and 4 pm on Friday. Sixth Form students can work in this area at any time and have 18 computers for their exclusive use. In our information-orientated age, competence in the use of IT and learning is increasingly important. The school is equipped with a wireless network to support students in their use of IT to develop learning when and where they require it. The school’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and website provide a portal between the school and home. Students will be able to access resources on the VLE to support them in their learning. Dedicated Sixth form IT learning spaces are provided in the School Resource Centre, Sixth Form Areas, and the Sixth Form Study Room, located in the Pegasus Block. The School aims to promote a healthy, active lifestyle and encourage lifelong participation. The School promotes a sport for all ethos and works hard to keep up with present trends. There are many sporting activities available. These include rugby, soccer, cricket, hockey, basketball, netball, dance, swimming, cross-country, athletics, table tennis, trampolining, badminton, tennis, squash, rowing, canoeing, sailing, volleyball, and golf. The School supports teams of all ages. The School also encourages the pursuit of excellence by offering competitive fixtures. Students representing the School are expected to act in a sporting manner at all times, thereby bringing credit to themselves and their teams. Llangattock School Monmouth! An independent school and nursery set in the beautiful Monmouthshire countryside offering education for children from 2 – 19 years. “We are delighted to have created Llangattock School Monmouth, which rose out of a conviction that there is a better way for children to learn. Here, children’s progress can be limitless, as they learn AT THEIR OWN PACE, and are championed for every emerging skill, led by enthusiastic experts in each topic. We enable every child to have a positive experience of childhood and education, growing into the unique adult he or she can be, with a secure and positive self-image. The School was built in 1870 by John Rolls, the father of the aviator Charles. The family retains strong links with us and we use their family crest and motto ‘Celeritas et Veritas’ (Nimble & True). Our school colors are taken from the Rolls Royce livery. During the war, the building was home to over a hundred children, and it remained open as the Village School until 1991. Many local people remember the school with affection and often come back to visit us. At a time when rural schools are closing and amalgamating, Principal Rosemary Whaley recognized the potential of such a magnificent building in its beautiful setting and saw it as the perfect location to house her vision of what educating children could be. The School is an intrinsic part of the local community, hosting weddings, national and country elections, festivals, and concerts. The school is broadly divided into two groups Lower School and Upper School. However, lessons are also taught vertically, meaning that should your child be particularly gifted or interested in particular subjects they are allowed to develop their talents without limit. For instance, you will frequently see a child of 7 with a high reading age enjoying a lesson alongside 10-year-olds. This also means that should your child be ‘struggling’ in another area it would not feel odd to consolidate a skill alongside younger learners. There is a timetable to enable the week to encompass all the different subjects but often a topic is best learned by immersion for whole days at a time. We cover a broad range of subjects in addition to the core curriculum. In our philosophy lessons, children are encouraged to expand their thoughts and ideas and verbal reasoning demonstrates their ability to think around a topic. We have an outstanding reputation for language, communication, music, and drama. Native speakers teach Welsh and French. Every child is encouraged to perform and speak on the stage and plays are often written by the children themselves. The school stands on 6 acres of playing fields, wildflower meadows, and trees.
