About Me

  1. CST. Margaret's School has been a place for girls to learn, grow, and thrive for nearly 100 years. We believe in the power of all girls, value your uniqueness, and respect your views. Each girl is given the individual support she needs to excel in the classroom and all aspects of life. We offer boarding and day programs for girls in grades 8–12 and a postgraduate program, THRIVE. Girls gain strong academic skills here, develop leadership ability, and build character to prepare them to succeed on whatever path they take. Grounded in Episcopal values, we provide a welcoming, inclusive experience for girls from across the country and around the world, including girls with autism who can study at grade level and plan to go to college. At St. Margaret's, you will belong to a close community full of opportunities that promote competence and build confidence to help you overcome challenges, try new things, and become your personal best. Our programs are designed to enrich the lives of a diverse community of girls: Academic Program: we know how to successfully teach girls to be life-long learners, to succeed in the classroom, in college, and life. International Program: girls worldwide find their second home at St. Margaret's as part of a community of supportive sisters. Our International Program is one of the most established among American boarding schools, and our international students represent nearly 30% of our community. Arts Program: creativity is nurtured here, and girls are allowed to explore new areas of expression and gain new skills through our visual and performing arts programs. Athletics Program: girls develop character, work to become part of a team, and push to be skilled student-athletes in our Athletics Program that coaches them to Be St. Margaret's. A wide range of afternoon activities also provide opportunities for girls to focus on their overall fitness and well-being. River Program: taking advantage of our beautiful riverfront campus, this program spans the curriculum, co-curriculum, and residential life by engaging girls in hands-on science, outdoor adventures, and volunteer service. Minimester: students participate in a two-week winter term to take enrichment courses or go on an educational trip. Seniors spend two weeks as an intern in a field of potential career interest through the Independent Study Program. Wheat Learning Center: our innovative resource center provides services that foster a productive learning culture by supporting the individual student's needs, including girls with autism who are studying at grade-level. Through the Wheat Center, we provide enrichment services and academic support, teach study and organization skills, and promote healthy curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and perseverance. Its primary purpose was to "meet the need in Tidewater of a standard school, at the least possible cost, for girls of character and ability." Students often arrived by steamboat back then, as there was no bridge linking Tappahannock with the Northern Neck. There was no government road to Richmond or an easy way to reach a significant metropolitan area, like Washington, DC. "St. Margaret is instilled into us that there was a right and there was a wrong, and all our lives we would have to make that choice and our characters were built by the choices we made." -Nancy Berry '23, St. Margaret's first graduate. St. Margaret's School provides a learning environment where girls know they belong, are challenged and supported to believe in themselves, and prepared to become their best. We inspire girls to reach their full potential and make a better world. The world is a better place because of generations of St. Margaret's women who found their voice and made a difference in their communities. In a Christian environment founded on the Episcopal tradition, girls develop honor and character, an appreciation for each individual's uniqueness, and a desire to give to the world. Girls are challenged to be their best in all areas of their lives. By learning to meet these challenges, they develop confidence, resilience, and strength of character. In addition to learning academic and life skills, they become independent, creative, and morally courageous, effective communicators. St. Margaret's girls know who they are, what they can do, and how to do. Our mission and vision are expressed in three powerful words that stand for everything we do and for what we hope to achieve in raising and educating girls: Belong. Believe. Become View full school
  2. St. Margaret’s Episcopal School is a vibrant learning community where natural curiosity and academic pursuit flourish. We educate the hearts and the minds of our students to nurture the whole child. Students have unlimited opportunities to discover and explore new passions. They are supported and cheered on by a diverse community rooted in our Episcopal identity and values. Students and teachers are eager and enthusiastic to be here, to be together, to learn and grow, and that energy is contagious. St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, a place where students thrive. There is a reason families come from all over Southern California to be part of our nurturing, close-knit community. Our dedicated teachers and caring parents come together and participate in shared purpose to educate our students to be productive, healthy and happy children today and moral citizens tomorrow. Guided by our Episcopal identity, our students are recognized as much for their honor, responsibility and principled behavior as they are for their academic, artistic and athletic achievement. Our vigorous, college-preparatory curriculum offers a thoughtful balance and breadth of challenging experiences for every student. St. Margaret’s is not just an education it is a vibrant community that becomes part of your family, your lives and who you are. Being a member of the St. Margaret’s community offers a unique opportunity to be part of something bigger than ourselves. We often hear that our students and alumni are easily recognized for their integrity, leadership, character and values. This is what drew many of us to St. Margaret’s and what motivates each of us to contribute and carry forward this legacy. At St. Margaret’s, character is forged, futures are framed, lifelong connections are made and the lives of students, faculty and families are forever changed for the good. Together we inspire students and allow them to explore and cultivate who they are today, and ultimately prepare them to pursue their dreams tomorrow. We invite you to explore our school for your child and family. St. Margaret’s Episcopal School is a diverse community dedicated to developing the whole child. We nurture spiritual growth, an appreciation for life-long learning, the courage to lead and a responsibility to give to others. Our graduates are independent thinkers of integrity and compassion who reveal their resilience and collaborative nature in the face of challenge and opportunity. St. Margaret’s Episcopal School is upheld by the basic principles of our Episcopal tenets that individuals and institutions are called to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being. Episcopal schools are not solely communities for Christians, rather as ecumenical and diverse ministries of educational and human formation for people of all faiths and backgrounds. Episcopal schools also integrate religious and spiritual formation into the curriculum and life of the school community. Episcopal schools exist not merely to educate, but to demonstrate and proclaim the unique worth and beauty of all human beings. St. Margaret's Episcopal School does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, color, religion, sexual orientation or national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational, admission, financial aid, hiring and athletic policies or in other school-administered programs. At St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, diversity is an essential aspect of our Episcopal identity. The core of our mission is rooted in the Anglican tradition which calls us to seek and serve God in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself. We recognize that we are all spiritual beings on a human journey and that we fulfill our mission when students and families from diverse backgrounds join our school community. We recognize and appreciate that diversity exists in the languages we speak, the colors of our skin, the traditions we observe, the religions we practice, the structure of our families, the financial resources we possess, the special needs we have, and in our age, sex, gender and sexuality. We believe that our separate heritages help define us as individuals, and that our commitment to learning about one another and the larger world unites us as a school community and prepares our students for living in a complex global society. The creation of a diverse community requires an intentional and diligent commitment of time, energy and resources. Through efforts such as financial aid and the Tartan Support programs, we strive to make a St. Margaret’s education accessible to qualified students from underserved and under-represented backgrounds. When our students graduate from St. Margaret’s, we hope we will have prepared them to be culturally competent global citizens with a strong sense of their own identity, a willingness to see the common threads which run through our lives, a high regard for the value and breadth of differences, and an ability to live and communicate effectively in a complex world of multiple cultures, experiences and viewpoints. 3. We believe that diversity and multicultural education are essential components of our students' lives as we prepare them to live and work in an ever-evolving, complex society. Our mission matters! We are a school committed to developing the whole student through rigorous and innovative academics, active faith development, an incredible breadth of high-quality extracurricular opportunities, and a commitment to serve. These pillars of our students' education strike a beautiful balance that fosters meaningful, lasting growth of each individual. Furthermore, becoming a Red Knight means that each student will be known, nurtured, and challenged. Every day our faculty and staff live our school's mission authentically "to develop the student's highest potential in body, spirit, and mind." They sincerely believe in the importance of a BSM education to the individual and society and are committed to guiding our students. To these ends, our talented faculty and staff guide Red Knights through authentic learning daily. Building relationships and creating learning experiences that resonate and matter drives our faculty and staff. Along with the learning experiences, the sense of community at Benilde-St. Margaret's is compelling and endures as time passes. Their experiences bound our students and families, whether grounded in the Catholic faith, engaging courses, state championships, or meaningful service to others. Generations of students have walked the halls, and many of our alumni and families have remained connected to the school over time. Throughout life, Red Knights can be found everywhere, using their gifts to shape the world. Students are exposed to a solid core curriculum and can choose from various elective courses in a broad range of subjects. Our faculty provides the very best learning environment and instruction for our students to ensure their success. The curriculum includes numerous honors courses and 15 Advanced Placement courses (listed at right). Our students consistently score well above average on the ACT and SATs, and we consistently applaud National Merit finalists, semifinalists, and commended scholars. Our graduates go on to some of the very best colleges and universities in the country. Recognizing that challenge is unique to each student, we offer academic support to help meet various learning style needs. Learning also extends beyond our campus, with student growth being cultivated through experiences involving service work and cultural trips. Our 1:1 laptop program reflects our commitment to providing students and teachers with access to information, interactive learning opportunities, and specific online resources that enhance teaching and learning. We prepare students for the dynamic and ever-changing world in which they'll study, live, and work. View full school
  4. Welcome to St Margaret's. It is a difference borne not just from the present, but one steeped in the school's origins and the legacy of the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent, who established what would become St Margaret's over 120 years ago. Underpinned by the Anglican faith, St Margaret's has remained faithful to the Sisters' calling to prepare young women for further education and life. In the words of Sister Bernadine in 1939, "setting the feet of future generations on the right path." This means educating the whole child while also recognizing that every child is different. One of this school's greatest strengths is its smaller size, allowing for a personalized learning approach. Also, we provide our students with the broadest range of experiences to choose from to explore many interests that can lead to greater self-discovery. We offer 18 sports, a thriving cultural program across music and visual and performing arts, clubs, and activities, and emphasize social responsibility. Ultimately we want our young women to graduate with the confidence to go out into the world and use the strengths discovered and developed at St Margaret's to make a positive contribution locally, nationally, and globally. Being educated in an all-girls' school truly empowers our young women to believe they can achieve whatever they set out to. In an all-girls' school, they witness strong female leadership and have more chances to lead. They enjoy more freedom from gender stereotyping. They enjoy equal opportunity and every opportunity. They work more collaboratively and less competitively, and they have a strong and connected female network after graduation. We witness the result of this every day through our past students – successful in their fields all over the world, positively impacting their sphere through their work and their outlook. You will get to know just a few of them through our website, and we will add other Old Girls' stories regularly. We have a wonderful campus at St Margaret's with excellent facilities and the latest technology. But the most significant single influence on educational outcomes and the overall impact we can have on your child's education is our staff. We have a team of incredibly dedicated, compassionate, and exemplary teachers committed to each child's education – and not just their academic results. While we strive for each child to achieve the best possible results, perhaps even exceeding their expectations, it is equally important to us that they are learning about life, learning about themselves and that we are equipping them with tools they can use to help them succeed in all aspects of their life. The other significant influence that has a very positive impact at St Margaret's is our community. Our students are engaged and enthusiastic, our parents are involved and supportive, and over 6000 Old Girls maintain an active connection to the school. This sense of community is palpable when you visit St Margaret's. When you are ready, please give our admissions team a call and arrange a tour, join us for our Open House events, or you can enroll online at any time. View full school
  5. St. Margaret's School, the only all-girls school on Vancouver Island and Canada's first all-girls STEM school. Ours is a community that cares deeply about girls. We have been dedicated to their education, development, and wellbeing for over a century. Together, we help girls become powerful learners with the knowledge, attitudes, and courage to thrive – in their studies and careers, and life. Our small-scale learning environment provides teachers with the flexibility to personalize learning for each student – building upon individual passions and challenging each girl to improve her performance, exceed her expectations, and realize her potential. The mission is Empowering her to set her course & shape her dreams. St Margaret's School values diversity and inspires excellence of mind and strength of spirit. Students here are challenged to take responsibility for their own learning experience, develop individual worth, academic excellence, personal wellness, connection with nature, and service to their local and global communities. This is a school where girls who want to change the world become women who do. Our committed staff, a beautiful campus, and an innovative curriculum create a nurturing environment that challenges students to achieve their leadership potential. Our Strategic Plan was developed by collaborating with the entire SMS community, including the Board, staff, parents, students, and school partners. We would like to thank all those who participated over the last two years and took the time to attend sessions, fill out surveys, and offer insights. The plan is envisioned to operate over a ten-year horizon. It is sufficiently broad to allow flexibility in yearly implementation while clearly articulating the key markers that define us. It is a reflection of our shared desires and collective intent. You will notice that our Mission, Vision, Values, and Principles are described from a girl's perspective. Our students are our future, and we have placed them clearly at the center of this Strategic Plan and the process to make it come alive. Unveiled in the Fall of 2012, the Strategic Plan sets a clear intention for the school over the next ten years. St. Margaret's School was founded in 1908 by two English sisters, Edith and Isabel Fenwick, who were soon joined by their friend Margaret Barton. The school started in a small house at 810 Cook Street. It moved across the street to a larger house at 813 Cook Street and soon acquired the neighboring house at 819 Cook Street for additional classroom space. By the spring of 1911, plans were underway for a new school and boarding house to accommodate the school's growing population. Tragedy struck on April 10, 1911, when the Fenwick sisters were drowned in the capsizing of the SS Iroquois as it left Sidney en route to Salt Spring Island. Margaret Barton, who was accompanying them, was found unconscious with one hand bound to a capsized lifeboat's gunwale. Students, years later, would recall Margaret Barton's scarred hands from steam pipe burns. A second home to local girls and students worldwide, SMS has an international reputation as a center for inquiry-based learning, academic excellence, and girls' leadership development. We provide empowering education for girls at all levels: starting with the foundational skills built by our pioneering early learning program and elementary grades, our students are given the support and challenges they need to grow and excel straight through middle school and succeed in graduation in Grade 12. Our boarding school program for Grades 7–12 attracts girls worldwide and enriches learning experiences for all students. Our elementary school program is a small, family-like community where teachers develop strong relationships with their students and their families. Classroom activities are designed to extend students' natural curiosity and actively engage them in the learning process. Our students learn to be curious, to work together, and to love learning. They develop a solid foundation for successful academic achievement, positive peer relationships, and a growing sense of responsibility for their learning. The Middle Years Program at St. Margaret's School (SMS) engages students in Grades 5 – 8 in a unique set of opportunities to address the development and learning needs of girls at this critical stage of growth. We provide our girls with the foundations for success: challenges to excel, experiences that inspire, and future preparation. Our Senior Years Program (Grades 9-12) focuses on preparing our students for life after SMS. Our hope is that time spent here will provide each girl with noble ambitions and huge dreams, and our goal is to help her leave with a plan to achieve them. We recognize that learning occurs at different times and in different ways; our learning environment respects the diversity that exists amongst our students and supports each girl's development. 6. Welcome to St Margaret’s School in Bushey, Hertfordshire, an independent day and boarding school for pupils aged 3 to 18. Founded in 1749, we are one of the oldest independent schools in the UK. As well as day places for all ages, we offer a range of flexible boarding options for both UK and international pupils from the age of 11. We are a school with a proven record of academic success in public examinations and our pupils move onto competitive courses at leading universities and institutions both here in the UK and around the world. Our outward-looking ethos aims to encourage a genuine enthusiasm for learning and an ability to independently explore subjects beyond the classroom. Our curriculum addresses a rapidly changing world filled with complex challenges as well as exciting new possibilities. The pastoral care at St Margaret’s is the central pillar upon which the success of the school is based and we are proud of the quality of care and opportunity were given to every one of our pupils no matter what stage of their education. We offer a rich program of extra-curricular activities and pupils are encouraged to find their talent whatever that may be. There is no typical St Margaret’s pupil all are valued individually by our qualified and committed staff. However, they are all dedicated young people who strive to succeed in all that they do and are passionate about topics facing them today. The quality of care at St Margaret’s School enables pupils to grow in an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding and leave equipped with the confidence, aptitude, and skills they need for life and work. Our beautiful 60-acre site boasts a combination of superbly resourced historic and modern buildings and we are easily accessible from both London, the Home Counties, and all the major London airports. If you have not yet visited us, please do and we will show you the love of learning, culture of achievement, and relish of challenge that is the essence of St Margaret’s. At St Margaret’s we believe that a pupil can only reach their full potential if they are first, happy and confident in the school environment and secondly, stimulated and challenged to step outside their comfort zone. Young pupils flourish at St Margaret’s, equipped to pursue ambitions with confidence and ready to face both the wonders and challenges of our fast-changing world. They learn to understand compassion and empathy and the importance of not only being part of a community but how vital it is to give back to it. We have three key aims at St Margaret’s. We aim to provide: A broadly based academic and co-curricular program that enables them to achieve exam success and education for life, equipping our pupils to pursue their ambitions with confidence, wisdom, and compassion. An inclusive pastoral ethos rooted in kindness and respect for ourselves, each other, and our environment with an emphasis on service to others both in school and in the global community. A striving for excellence in all that we do and the upholding of the values of the school arising from its traditions and heritage as we look to the future. View full school
  7. St Margaret's Lee is a one-form entry school (one class per year group), with a nursery providing part-time places for three- to four-year-olds. This is our mission statement, and it sums up what we stand for as a school community: We have high expectations of everyone We believe every child can and should achieve We want children to be happy and safe in our caring, Christian community We go the extra mile. We are a Church of England primary school and our values-based ethos helps to communicate to children and the wider community the importance of Christ's teaching and model for living. We strive to nurture these values in our children every day. In our school achievement reviews over the past five years, Lewisham local authority has consistently categorized us as an 'outstanding' school. This judgment is based on pupil achievement, quality of teaching, behavior, and safety, leadership and management, and overall effectiveness. In November 2014, the Ofsted inspection team judged us to be outstanding in all areas. We have an excellent teaching team, an active governing body and parents' association (called the Friends of St Margaret's Lee), and strong links with St Margaret's Church. Our class teachers and teaching assistants are highly dedicated, and the quality of their teaching shows in the progress and attainment of the children. But we have other ways of judging the teaching quality across the school too. Headteacher Mr. Wilson and Deputy Headteacher Mrs. Bushell provide regular in-class support and feedback to teachers, as well as monitoring planning, marking, and the classroom environment to help ensure consistently high standards. Key leading teachers and subject leaders provide another layer of support and challenge to ensure that new teachers very quickly become excellent teachers. Parents' responses to our recent questionnaire overwhelmingly confirm that children are taught well (84% strongly agree 15% agree that 'My child is taught well at this school', based on 103 responses). Behavior in this school is excellent and children feel safe. We have child-friendly policies and procedures around behavior and safety and we give our staff clear guidance and training in child protection, first aid, and anti-bullying, making sure our standards are consistently high. As well as actively leading teaching and learning, another key to our success is the open communication we have with parents and carers. Whether it's in the playground before or after school, through the weekly newsletter, or over the phone, we believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential and it's something we are particularly proud of. Our senior leaders are assisted by an active governing body that challenges and supports them in areas such as curriculum and standards, finance, premises, admissions, and human resources. 8. We aim to provide an educational experience of the highest quality in a safe, caring, stimulating, and creative environment. We provide a wide range of learning opportunities that help our children to grow into independent and caring people. The staff team is committed to ensuring our children have a strong foundation of skills that will prepare them for their future adventures in life. In relationship with St Margaret’s Church, The Diocese of Manchester, and the wider community, the school takes care to thoughtfully nurture the promotion of spiritual values that reflect its richer culture, secular and religious intake. In practice, this means that everyone is given equality of opportunity, irrespective of race, culture, religion, gender class, or ability. Such an approach maximizes and develops the strength of its Church of England foundation, namely to grow as an inclusive school community, where spiritual values of caring and respecting, and achieving are promoted. The nursery can accommodate 60 children in full-time places. Names for places are taken after a child’s second birthday. Children are admitted in September after their third birthday. The criteria for allocating places are the same as the Local Authority (LA) for reception places. The standard intake number for the school is 90. Children are admitted into the Reception class via a single intake in September. Children whose fifth birthday falls between September 1st and the end of August commence in September. It is essential that parents/carers complete the admission pack for a school place when received from the LA and return it to the LA by the date stated. This form must be completed and returned even if the child is a sibling and even if the child is already in our nursery. St. Margaret’s CE Primary School aims to create and maintain a safe learning environment where all children and adults feel safe, secure, and valued and know they will be listened to and taken seriously. Our school is committed to the principles outlined in ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015’ and implements policies, practices, and procedures which promote safeguarding and the emotional and physical well-being of children, young people, and staff. Access to cross-curricular activities will provide opportunities to develop self-esteem and self-motivation and to help pupils respect the rights of other individuals and potentially vulnerable groups. All children have access to an appropriate curriculum, differentiated to meet their needs. This enables them to learn to develop the necessary skills to build self-esteem, respect others, defend those in need, resolve conflict without resorting to violence, question, and challenge, and make informed choices in later life. All the children currently on the SEND register are under the provision of SEN Support. This means that they have been identified as having additional needs. All teachers are responsible for every child in their care, including those with special educational needs. At St. Margaret’s CE Primary we have internal processes for monitoring the quality of provision and assessment of children’s needs. Where necessary we seek additional support from external agencies. The identification of SEN is built into the overall approach to monitoring the progress and development of all pupils. Where a pupil continues to make less than expected progress, despite evidence-based support and interventions that are matched to the pupil’s area of need, the school considers involving specialists. We may involve specialists at any point to advise us on early identification of SEN and effective support and interventions. Class teachers identify emerging difficulties and respond early. We also listen to and address any concerns raised by the children themselves. Where appropriate a child should always be involved in the review of their Individual Education Plan. At St Margaret’s CE Primary School we appreciate that the society within which we live is diverse and, therefore, we aim for our curriculum and life within the school to reflect this. Throughout day-to-day school life, we try to make links to the social, cultural, moral, and spiritual values as they arise and in so doing we hope to enable our children to develop greater tolerance and understanding of the World. As you are probably aware for the last few years the government has allocated additional funds to schools to support the education of children in care (CiC) and on free school meals (FSM). Their reason for this is these children tend to do less well at school, be less likely to go on to higher education, and are more likely to be unemployed as adults. While we know that this will not be the case for all children on free school meals or in care, it is good that the government recognizes that children facing these circumstances can sometimes face greater challenges. At St Margaret's we want all of our children to 'Aspire and Achieve' and we work hard to help every child have high aspirations for what they can achieve and high hopes for their future. 9. We have so much to celebrate at St Margaret's and we hope this site gives you a taste of the exciting and creative world that we provide for our school community. We are passionate that anyone who is involved in our community, in whatever capacity, receives a blessing through the atmosphere and ethos we strive to create. Our vision is to equip children with a foundation of core values and skills on which they can build a rich and fruitful life. We know God has amazing plans for our children and we have a part to play in preparing them for taking up that place. We hope we are welcoming, caring, stimulating, enjoyable, and many other things! But St Margaret's is also a Church of England Voluntary Aided School. We are a partnership between the Local Authority, the Church of England, and the local community, working together to provide an excellent education for children. Through our explicitly Christian ethos, we aim to foster the growth and well-being of the whole child: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. We understand that such growth is best nurtured by a partnership between school, child, and home. As the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of a Child puts it, ‘Children learn what they live.’ An education at St Margaret's still best to suit children and families who wish to embrace both the growth of the whole child and our living Christian tradition and ethos. Every year ninety new children enter the Reception classes at St Margaret's while several others enter other year groups as vacancies arise. St Margaret's welcomes all children from across our local community. Like all schools, St Margaret's has to prioritize admissions when more children apply than we have places available. When that occurs we use a list of criteria that are outlined in our prospectus. Once a child has been admitted we invite parents and families to be actively involved in school life supporting their child and, through that, strengthening and enriching our local community. Most schools have to prioritize places offered to children. There are normally more children wishing to attend St Margaret's than we have places available. For details of the criteria we use to allocate places, please see the admissions section of our school prospectus. At St Margaret's C of E Primary school, we have recently updated our Eco code. Our code encourages children to inhabit 'green' behaviors from a young age. Eco-codes are displayed in every classroom in the school and the teachers regularly refer to them when reminding the children about making the right choices. Through regular contact with parents in the form of newsletters, questionnaires, and help with themed days, our long-term aim is to encourage children to help make small changes in their home environment to help save the world's resources. Our curriculum ensures excellent coverage of the National Curriculum (Years 1-6) and Foundation Stage Early Years Curriculum (Reception Children). We have fully embraced the higher expectations set out in both curriculums and have devised our units of work for each subject area so that we can ensure a sound progression of learning. We also have a core team of specialist teachers who are passionate about their curriculum area these teachers work with different groups of children each year. Our team includes PE, music, art, and computing specialists. Our Reception pupils learn both indoors and outdoors, experiencing a range of adult-led and child-initiated activities. We value and incorporate the children’s interests as they develop. As children approach their final half term of reception, they start to prepare for their transition to year 1 and begin to experience key stage 1 learning. In years 1-6, we ensure that this ‘active’ and ‘engaging’ learning continues, with teachers maximizing opportunities for talk time, active, visual, audio learning, and the use of the outdoors. At all times, we focus on learning being challenging, engaging, and enjoyable The school was founded in 1649 and the present building was opened in 1968. The original one-form entry school was extended to a two-form entry school in 1994 to enable additional pupils to access the opportunities offered by the school. The school has it's own Foundation Stage 1 (Nursery) and the school can offer high standards of educational provision to 470 pupils. St Margaret's school has an excellent Governing Body from a diverse background and each member brings a unique set of skills to our school. Anyone aged 18 or over can become a school governor. No specialist qualifications are needed and people from many different backgrounds volunteer for the role. Enthusiasm, commitment, and an interest in education are the most important qualities. You don’t need to have a family member attending a school or college to become a governor. As a school or college governor, your duties will include: assessing the strategic direction, policies, and objectives approving the budget reviewing progress against the budget, and objectives challenging and supporting senior staff playing a part in appointing staff. 10. St Margaret’s is undoubtedly a very special place. It certainly seems to inspire a deep loyalty from pupils, parents, and members. The values we hold are unashamedly Christian values, for St Margaret’s is a Church of England Academy – and that faith in God, and commitment to service, is deeply ingrained in everything we do. So we are proud of our Volunteering scheme. We are proud of our incredible range of extra-curricular activities (described as “outstanding” by Ofsted), and the superb opportunities we can offer our youngsters. It’s our dedication that enables that to happen. We are proud of the fact that so many ex-pupils have gone on to make a significant contribution to life in our great City and beyond, in so many different fields – and that so many of them are still keen to keep in touch and “put something back” into our school. And of course, we are proud of the high standards of learning here, of consistently strong GCSE results, and of our large, thriving Sixth Form (part of “The Faiths” Partnership with other local schools). We’re equally proud of the high standards of teaching. Our Academy Mission Statement: "Inspired by the knowledge and love of God we all come together to learn in a Christian community where we are valued for who we are and who we could become". It is intended that education at St Margaret’s should be both life-lasting and life-enhancing. Our mission statement focuses on the work and the life of the school which takes place in an orderly atmosphere where self-discipline, mutual respect, and the welfare of each individual are greatly valued. Importance is given to regular worship, religious education in the classroom, and the general presentation of Christianity in the school family. The school presents the teachings of Our Lord but recognizes that commitment is a matter which must be left to each individual. We regard the school as an extension of the family. We want everyone to enjoy their time with us, to be proud of their school, and to uphold the principles that underpin a Christian School. As an Academy, we have adopted 8 Christian values which we feel are the basis of our community: Compassion, Endurance, Forgiveness, Friendship, Justice, Peace, Trust, Wisdom. Education is not just about academic learning it is about personal development too. As we work together, we expect that a good working relationship, and FRIENDSHIPs, will develop, between students as well as between members of staff. All boys joining the school in Year 7 have the opportunity to study English, Mathematics, Science, Design and Technology, Modern Foreign Languages, History, Geography, Religious Education, Physical Education, Art, Music, and Information Technology. They will also have a program on Learning for Life. During Year 9, boys are guided into a choice of subjects for their GCSE courses. They will also have a program of Learning for Life. Those students who have studied two languages in Year 7 will continue to do so in Years 8 and 9. During Year 9, boys are guided into a choice of subjects for their GCSE courses. At present, the subjects studied at Key Stage 4 are English, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (Core and Additional) or the three separate sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Religious Education, ICT and a choice from the following options subjects: Art, Business Studies, Computing, Design and Technology (GCSE and BTEC), Geography, History, Modern Foreign Languages, ICT (Double Award), Music, Photography or Physical Education (GCSE). In addition, a program of Learning for Life, including Citizenship, Sex Education, Careers Education, and Work-Related Learning and Enterprise Education and PE and Games are taken by all boys. St Margaret’s takes a cross-curricular approach, building on content in existing National Curriculum subject areas and extending Citizenship concepts in specific Learning for Life lessons. As you may be aware, St Margaret’s is an 11-18 Church of England Academy we have long had an excellent reputation both for our work with 11- to 16-year-olds, and for our work in the Sixth Form with older students. We are fortunate to have many good and outstanding teachers working here – and that is the main reason why so many of our Sixth Form students achieve so highly and go on to land top jobs, or to realize their ambitions to study at top Universities. Our Sixth Form is, in many ways, an ideal size. It is small enough for us to get to know you individually. Yet our Sixth Form is also large enough to be able to offer a wide range of courses – a range of courses that is even larger thanks to our long-established collaborative links with three top Liverpool schools, Archbishop Blanch, Bellerive, and St Hilda’s. 13. St. Margaret's School, the only all-girls School on Vancouver Island and Canada's first all-girls STEM school. Ours is a community that cares deeply about girls; we have been dedicated to their education, development, and wellbeing for over a century. Together, we help girls become powerful learners with the knowledge, attitudes, and courage to thrive – in their studies and careers, and life. Our small-scale learning environment provides teachers with the flexibility to personalize learning for each student – building upon individual passions and challenging each girl to improve her performance, exceed her expectations and realize her potential. The mission is to empower her to set her course & shape her dreams. Our committed staff, beautiful campus, and innovative curriculum create a nurturing environment that challenges students to achieve their leadership potential. Our Strategic Plan was developed by collaborating with the entire SMS community, including the Board, staff, parents, students, and school partners. We want to thank all those who participated over the last two years and took the time to attend sessions, fill out surveys and offer insights. The plan is envisioned to operate over a ten-year horizon and is sufficiently broad to allow flexibility in yearly implementation while clearly articulating the key markers that define us. With increasing enrollment, it moved across the street to a larger house at 813 Cook Street and soon acquired the neighboring house at 819 Cook Street for additional classroom space. By the spring of 1911, plans were underway for a new school and boarding house to accommodate the School's growing population. Tragedy struck on April 10, 1911, when the Fenwick sisters were drowned in the SS Iroquois capsizing as it left Sidney en route to Salt Spring Island. 16. St Margaret’s College was founded in 1910 through the energy, faith, and determination of Bishop (later Archbishop) Julius who convinced the Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch of the need to establish a school for girls to parallel that already set up for boys. The Sisters of the Kilburn Order in London were invited to set up the school and it opened at 28 Armagh Street with 50 pupils. Under the Sisters, the school flourished and in 1913, with a roll of over 100, it moved into a new building on the corner of Cranmer Square and Chester Street West. In 1931 when the Sisters had to leave their educational work in New Zealand, they handed over to the Diocese a school strong in numbers and rooted firmly in the traditions and tenets of the Anglican faith. The Diocese appointed Mrs. Stephanie Grace Young MA (Oxon) as its first lay Headmistress and, in 1933, a Trust Board was set up to be responsible to the Diocese for the governance of the school. Its first Chairman was Bishop West-Watson, Bishop of Christchurch and later Primate of New Zealand. With a commitment to holistic education, balancing academic excellence with a multitude of co-curricular opportunities, St Margaret’s College encourages students and staff to discover their passions and be the very best they can be. A St Margaret’s College education is founded on Anglican values with a focus on service and wellbeing offered within a modern school environment promoting diversity, innovation, and sustainability. Each student is set up for success, joining a global alumni network of wahine toa with the courage to embrace change, the confidence to lead, the desire to learn, and the drive to make a positive impact on the world. At St Margaret’s Pre-School, we encourage children to be curious about their world. Our teachers provide opportunities for boys and girls to develop inquiring minds as they become creative and confident communicators and responsible citizens with a love of learning. In partnership with parents and whānau, we provide a nurturing environment where all children will thrive socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically, and spiritually. Our curriculum is based on the vision of Te Whāriki: that children grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body, and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society. We support and extend children’s learning by providing opportunities through an inquiry-based curriculum, enriched by specialist classes, facilities, and teachers. Our qualified teachers, support and extend children’s natural curiosity by planning an inquiry-based program drawing on current interests, events, and questions. Teachers provide a variety of experiences that weave the emerging inquiry into various curriculum areas that support the development of literacy, numeracy, motor skills, social interactions, art, and music. Through active investigation, children develop working theories and learn to question, investigate, experiment, and theorize in their quest for answers and solutions. We understand the importance of a smooth transition from pre-school to school as our children move to the next stage of their learning journey. Our transition to school program offers older boys and girls the opportunity to experience the routines, environment, and expectations of this next stage with one of our ECE and primary qualified teachers. All children are offered a term of this classroom experience up to three times a week. This complements the school visits they may be offered by the school they will be attending. In addition, our Pre-School boys are also invited to experience an all-boys environment at Medbury School. St Margaret’s College Senior School offers a wide range of exciting learning experiences for our senior students providing a sound foundation for success in NCEA or International Baccalaureate and most importantly, for their life beyond secondary education. We value holistic education blended with strong learning and academic focus. Our exceptional academic record provides outstanding opportunities for St Margaret’s girls in their future. St Margaret’s College is the only girls’ school in the South Island to offer a dual academic pathway in the Senior School, incorporating both NCEA and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB). In offering IB we allow our students to follow a philosophy of education and an internationally recognized qualification which reflects exactly what St Margaret’s is all about. Our Year 11 students study NCEA then in Year 12 the students are in the enviable position to choose whether they continue with their NCEA program or move to IB. This choice enables our students to follow the learning and assessment pathway that best suits their individual needs. View full school

Our Year 11 students study NCEA then in Year 12 the students are in the enviable position to choose whether they continue with their NCEA program or move to IB. This choice enables our students to follow the learning and assessment pathway that best suits their individual needs.

Believe. Become

There are regular inter-House competitions in Music, Cookery, Sport, Singing, and Dancing. For a school of its size, Queen Margaret’s provides an immense variety of activities, clubs and societies, and other Enrichment opportunities while never sacrificing the needs of the individual girl. As one parent recently noted, QM ‘benefits from being led and run as if it were a large school but has all benefits and familiarities you would expect of a small school.’

The mission is to empower her to set her course & shape her dreams.
