  1. Welcome to the University of Manitoba - Western Canada's first University. Founded 140 years ago, and located in the heart of the country, we are the region's largest and only research-intensive university offering over 100 academic programs, including professional disciplines such as medicine, law, and engineering. Our energetic university community is comprised of close to 30,000 students, over 8,900 faculty and staff, and 138,000 alumni in 137 countries. Over 16 percent of our current students are international, representing 115 countries. The University of Manitoba is located on Anishinabe and Metis traditional land. It is home to a thriving community of Indigenous researchers, staff, and more than 2,000 First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students, including over 3,580 graduate students — one of the most massive Indigenous student bodies in the country. Our University stimulates over $1.8 billion in economic activity in the province. We are leaders in Manitoba's knowledge economy with groundbreaking research in areas such as nanotechnology, functional foods and nutraceuticals, HIV/AIDS, and climate change. With a strong legacy of excellence to guide us, the University of Manitoba and its dynamic community of researchers, students, teachers, and staff address the challenges facing Canada and the world in the 21st century. The University of Manitoba is a coeducational, nondenominational, government-supported institution. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. Informed by input from more than 1,000 faculty, staff, students, and alumni, our University's strategic plan helps guide our decision-making and answers the question, "What future are we going to create?". Taking Our Place: University of Manitoba Strategic Plan 2015-2020 is a pledge to pursue five priorities: INSPIRING MINDS through innovative and quality teaching DRIVING DISCOVERY AND INSIGHT through excellence in research, scholarly work, and other creative activities CREATING PATHWAYS to Indigenous achievement BUILDING COMMUNITY that creates an outstanding learning and working environment FORGING CONNECTIONS to foster high-impact community engagement This plan strengthens the University's statement of commitment to Indigenous achievement and articulates a pledge to pursue relationships and dialogue with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples based on mutual trust, respect, and reciprocity This past year, the University of Manitoba welcomed 2,400 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, including more than 200 graduate students. We are home to one of the largest Indigenous student populations in Canada. Our Pathways to Indigenous Achievement plan reflects the life-changing nature of education, benefiting both individuals and communities. At U of M you'll find some of the country's brightest stars in Indigenous research, including Warren Cariou, Canada Research Chair in Narrative, Community, and Indigenous Cultures. In 2017, the University celebrated the 28th anniversary of the Annual Graduation Pow Wowhonouring the achievements of over 430 Indigenous graduates. In 2017-18, eight alumni, two faculty members, and the President of the University of Manitoba, Dr. David Barnard, joined the prestigious ranks of the Order of Manitoba (2017, 2018). Ten alumni and one faculty member were named to the Order of Canada, and one of our faculty members, Professor Frank Hawthorne, was promoted to Companion—the Order's highest recognition (2017, 2018)
