- Landmark East School, is Canada's only day and boarding school for students with learning differences. Landmark East is celebrating 40 years of empowering students to realize their full potential. The classes are small, allowing our dedicated teachers to create individualized programs to support the learning needs of each student. This helps students find their voice and leverage their strengths for success. This nurturing environment honours each learner. As you walk through the halls you feel a sense of belonging. Landmark East is an independent co-educational day and boarding school located in picturesque Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada. I invite you to drop in, call or email us to learn more about the difference the right school can make in the life of your child. Landmark East is an inspired day and boarding school that empowers students with learning differences to realize their full potential. We achieve this through small class sizes, individualized programs and our spirit of care and commitment. Landmark East School has been changing lives since 1979. We provide a rich learning environment for students who need more individualized attention. Our teachers focus on the needs of each student. This is a school that enables children to be themselves and focus on their learning journey. Every child deserves the best education possible! Don’t take our word for it, watch the video and listen for yourself. For 40 years Landmark East School has been providing specific programming for day and boarding students with learning disabilities. We offer expert support to students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD, ADHD, non-verbal learning disabilities and high functioning autism. The learning environment features a small student-teacher ratio. The Elementary School Program (Grades 2 to 6) is a day program that addresses the needs of students who are having difficulty acquiring literacy skills. The program uses a multi-sensory approach to develop skills in oral and written expression, comprehension, study skills, mathematics, drama, music and art. A key feature of this program is our daily 1:1 language skills intensive support class. The typical class size is six students or less. The Middle School Program (Grades 7 to 9) employs a multi-sensory approach to developing literacy, numeracy and study skills. The program offers an optional daily 1:1 intensive support class that optimizes the fundamental skills taught across the curriculum. The typical class size is six students or less. In addition to regular academic classes, students participate in a 90-minute physical education/activity program and a supervised 60-minute study hall class each day. The High School Program (Grades 10 – 12) offers courses that fully meet the requirements of the Nova Scotia Department of Education Public School Program. Landmark East School provides an exceptional education experience that offers students the opportunity to develop their abilities, skills and self-confidence to become enthusiastic independent learners capable of transitioning successfully to post-secondary education. Average class size is typically eight students or less and teachers use adaptive strategies designed to meet individual needs. Graduates are awarded the Nova Scotia Department of Education High School Graduation Diploma. Most Landmark East graduates continue their post-secondary studies at college and university. The Transition Year Program (post Grade 12) is offered to students who have completed Grade 12 but do not yet feel comfortable facing the demands of post-secondary education. Academically, the Transition Year Program focuses on developing literacy, research & organizational skills, as well as self-advocacy and personal growth. Socially, the program allows students to continue to be actively involved in a small secure community with opportunities to develop confidence and competence before moving on to post-secondary studies. The Starting Place: When students first come to Landmark East School their performance level is determined. It is important for them to begin their program using material that is at a comfortable level so that they can experience the feeling of success that is vital in the development of self-esteem. Introducing New Material: When students are ready to move on to more difficult tasks, the teacher will take care to break the new material down into smaller components, introducing them one at a time to avoid overload. Providing Formative Assessments: Teachers pace a student’s progress through individual programs and track each student's progress, making adjustments on a daily basis. The small class sizes allow teachers to monitor student understanding with timely feedback. Making Use of Student Strengths: Students have a preferred channel for learning, such as auditory, visual or tactical. Students at Landmark East School are taught through their strengths. Developing the Entire Student: The physical and artistic development of the student is recognized as being important for facilitating academic progress as well as promoting general well being. Students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of physical education activities as well as benefit from the art program. Incorporating Structure: Structure and organization are evident in all aspects of the Landmark East school day. All students benefit from a supervised study hall but can be promoted to a less structured setting once they develop the skills needed to work more independently. Thank you for your interest in learning more about the programs and services offered by Landmark East School a place where amazing things happen every day! - Landmark College's mission is to transform the way students learn, educators teach, and the public thinks about education. We provide highly accessible learning approaches that empower individuals who learn differently to exceed their aspirations and achieve their most significant potential. Through the Landmark College Institute for Research and Training, the College aims to extend its mission across the nation and worldwide. To fulfill our mission and provide a transformative educational experience, the College and our community remain dedicated to an ethos built on innovation, service to students with LDs, and willingness to grow and reinvent ourselves continually. To distinguish the College as the premier institution for students who learn differently, we plan to evolve in a disciplined but entrepreneurial way in response to changing our students' LD education needs, societal needs and opportunities, and career aspirations. The College aims to be identified as a leader in the post-secondary LD education field and engage in collaborative and strategic alliances to ensure our position as enduring pioneers. We are resolute in our commitment to embracing emerging, alternative technologies and learning environments that are changing the higher education industry today, in a way that best serves our LD-based systems and students. An overall environment optimized for student learning and living success, which provides strategies, tools, and confidence for wellness and life-long competencies, remains a critically important element contributing to the genius loci of our campus. Everything we do now and plan to do in the future is built on the understanding that student access to our programs is imperative—and directly linked to the financial strength and institutional sustainability. Institutional effectiveness is the extent to which an institution fulfills its mission. Landmark College examines institutional effectiveness regularly to ensure continuous quality improvement in all areas related to serving students and other core activities central to the College's mission. Institutional effectiveness at Landmark College is demonstrated through four critical processes: assessment, institutional research, accreditation, and strategic planning. Although LC is a smaller college (we like the term optimally sized), we provide students and their families with a heavily-resourced model with many choices. We have intentionally engineered "on-ramps and off-ramps" for our degrees and programs. For example, at LC, some students want and need our model for a Bridge Semester, which could be for one or two semesters. Others may find the associate degree programs best-suited for their college and career goals and objectives while others target our baccalaureate programs. LC is, simultaneously, a "four-year" college, a "two-year" college, and a "transition program" college—and therefore, we are an increasingly comprehensive college that offers many paths to college credit, to competencies and capabilities, to credentials and success. Landmark College was the first institution of higher learning to pioneer college-level studies for students with dyslexia. Today, LC is a global leader in integrated teaching methods for students who learn differently, including students with learning disabilities (such as dyslexia), ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Landmark College Financial Aid Office understands that reaching one's education goal is both a personal and financial decision. There is a great deal of responsibility involved in pursuing a college degree. Both prospective and currently enrolled students require a commitment and sensitivity to their personal and financial needs. At Landmark College, we make every effort to assist qualified students in finding the financial resources necessary to cover a college education cost. Landmark College's degrees set high standards for academic performance. Degrees at the associate and bachelor level allow students to choose from a range of study programs, including natural and computer science, business, art, and liberal studies. Distinctive among all programs emphasize the development of metacognition, self-advocacy skills, and individual strategies for learning. At Landmark College, we understand that each learner comes with a unique set of experiences and educational background, but with a clear objective of reaching success on their terms. We debunk myths and challenge labels, providing an environment unique in higher education: Every professional on campus knows that student learning is the center of all that we do at Landmark College. Every student recognizes that their peers have all shared some elements of having a learning difference. Talking about learning, focusing on ability and talent, not just disability, is a campus-wide enterprise. A Bridge Experience is a short -term commitment that yields long term gains. With a focus on boosting learning strategies, academic skills, and self-reflection, students can improve their academic approach to College. At Landmark College, we believe Study Abroad is one of the most rewarding and life-changing experiences students can have during their college years. Our programs are led by Landmark faculty and designed with careful attention to the structure of program itineraries, a focus on student support, and an emphasis on safety. At Landmark College, understanding who you are, what you value, what you stand for, and whom you want to become is central to your educational experience. At LC, you get to bring forward and develop every strength, talent, and ambition you have within yourself. You will find your direction and develop the confidence you need to reach your goals.
