  1. More than anything else, Jackson Prep is a school that passionately pursues academic excellence…it is what we do best. With your first step on our campus, you will sense something different about Jackson Prep. Our students demonstrate it. Our parents support it. Our faculty and staff instill it. Our alumni testify to it. It is an expectation of excellence in all that we do. Over the years, this expectation has developed into a tradition unmatched by any other school in the state. Jackson Prep is unique because students come from elementary and junior high schools throughout the greater Jackson area. When you consider the variety of individuals who compose Jackson Prep, it is not surprising that our students' talents and intellectual strengths are as diverse as their personalities. Because we are a community of learners, we value each student's academic abilities, and we focus all of our resources to nurture each one's particular interests. Jackson Preparatory School inspires and challenges students toward academic, athletic, and artistic excellence, instills personal integrity through biblical values, and equips students to pursue lives of distinction in service to society. Jackson Preparatory School seeks to provide excellence in education in an atmosphere conducive to its students' intellectual, cultural, social, spiritual, and physical development. The school recognizes our times' needs and accepts the challenge to develop each student's potential to the greatest extent possible. Jackson Preparatory School strives to be a school where learning and character are nourished, where teachers and students are valued as individuals, where differences are respected. Talents are nurtured where success and an honest effort are recognized. Failures become instructive where judgments are tempered with compassion and achievements with humility, where education is not an end in itself. However, a means to the individual's fulfillment as a contributing member of the world community. Prep students have many opportunities to develop physically, socially, and emotionally through participation in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities. The student government association, debate team, student publications, service clubs, academic honorary societies, band, choir, spirit teams, visual arts classes and exhibits, drama and musical theater productions, and special interest clubs are representative examples of the co-curricular activities available to students. Prep enjoys statewide and regional recognition for its competitive athletic programs. Varsity teams compete in Class AAAA of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools. Prep also competes against schools from outside this association and from other states and regions. Prep teams have won championships in football, basketball, baseball, track, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and golf. Since 1970, over 200 Prep graduates have participated in collegiate athletics. With this in mind, our core curriculum provides every student with a strong foundation in English, math, science, history, and world languages. Honors programs and Advanced Placement classes are available in all major areas. Prescribed help is available for students with learning differences and special needs. Supplementing our core curriculum is a broad array of electives in the fine arts, business, journalism, and physical education.
  2. The nature of a progressive school is to keep pushing forward, to never be at rest. Jackson Academy’s original mission in 1959 was considered innovative: to teach reading by phonics. Counter to academic trends at the time, our founders believed—and evidence showed—that phonics, in-depth reading, time for play, and exploration of the arts all contributed to more robust student success. An independent college preparatory day school in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi, JA continues to embrace innovation today. At Jackson Academy, no one goes it alone. Here, you are surrounded by a community of supporters–all dedicated to helping you identify your most extraordinary talents, develop your particular gifts, and live with a strong sense of faith and purpose. All of us, all behind you, with all our hearts. ALL FOR ONE. That is The JA Way. We understand that choosing the right school environment for your child can be challenging. At a glance, most quality schools look remarkably similar — they boast academic excellence and a range of activities and extracurriculars that will enrich your child’s development. Jackson Academy offers all of those things and more. We invite you to peel back the first layers of academics, arts, music, and athletics and look more closely at the culture that we have built at JA. Founded in 1959 (notably, before court-mandated integration) on a phonics-based curriculum, JA remains proudly independent. Counter to academic trends at the time, such as sight-reading, our founders believed — and evidence showed — that traditional methods of teaching and learning, including phonics, in-depth reading, time for play, and an exploration of the arts all contributed to healthier outcomes for student success. We foster that same independent thinking in our students. While we retain a “traditional” curriculum focus, we believe that an environment of constant improvement brings the best possible experiences to our students. We strive to be the leading independent school in Mississippi and be a national example for teaching and learning. However, we seek more than the next outstanding achievement or recognition. We believe that we must model the very idea of leadership for our students and each other. At JA, leadership means more than just joining clubs or earning an “A,” it means setting an example by living life to its fullest potential and making a positive contribution to the world. That is what makes Jackson Academy a special place for your child. The JA academic experience focuses holistically on student learning success. Our college-prep curriculum prepares JA grads for more than college admittance. We develop students who will thrive and succeed. Our teaching practices nurture a love of learning and exploration that transcend simple knowledge acquisition. Students need the core foundation of knowledge and skills that will prepare them for 21st Century citizenship. These skills include creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. While these skills are not new, they are an ever-increasing demand in a more digital and more globally connected world. Technology has evolved into a tool for fostering these 21st-century skills. The Jackson Academy Service and Learning Plan is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. The Service and Learning Plan are based upon the principles found in the school’s mission statement. By committing to help others in need, students are challenged to become responsible citizens while growing spiritually, emotionally, socially, and physically.
  3. Jackson State University has a distinguished history, rich in the tradition of educating young men and women for leadership, having undergone seven name changes as it grew and developed. Founded as Natchez Seminary in 1877 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society, the school was established as Natchez, Mississippi "for the moral, religious and intellectual improvement of Christian leaders of the colored people of Mississippi and the neighboring states." In November 1882, the school was moved to Jackson in March 1899, the curriculum was expanded, and the name was changed to Jackson College. The state assumed support of the college in 1940, assigning to it the mission of training teachers. Subsequently, between 1953 and 1956, the curriculum was expanded to include a graduate program and bachelor's programs in the arts and sciences. The name was then changed to Jackson State College in 1956. Further expansion of the curriculum and a unique building program preceded the elevation of Jackson State College to university status on March 15, 1974. In 1979, Jackson State was officially designated the Urban University of the State of Mississippi. Presently, Jackson State University, a public, coeducational institution, is supported by legislative appropriations supplemented by student fees and federal and private grants. We offer our students a well-rounded education that starts with academics and includes athletics, fine arts, character education, and leadership opportunities. Quality education is a beautiful gift to give your child. We encourage you to consider that education at the University School of Jackson. "We instill a passion for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while committing to personal integrity, mutual respect, and lifelong learning." USJ is a non-denominational, non-sectarian, college preparatory school dedicated to academic excellence and our founding principles of faith, service, and scholarship. Based on a heritage grounded in Judeo-Christian values, we provide an educational environment where students of all ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds are valued and respected. The faculty, administration, and students are empowered to nurture and embrace the Judeo-Christian values and our operating principles. By fulfilling our mission and adherence to these core principles and values, we prepare our graduates to be responsible and informed world citizens. Founded in 1970, the University School of Jackson is an independent school that creates a lifelong learning foundation. From the developmental curriculum in the infant and toddler program to the Advanced Placement courses in the Upper School, USJ focuses on the individual student's needs, providing the environment and opportunity for each student to develop their academics' potential athletics, fine arts, and leadership. USJ is the only independent school between Memphis and Nashville that focuses on preparing students for college. We attract students from throughout West Tennessee, with some traveling an hour or more each day to get to school. Our students routinely win top awards in regional and state academic, athletic, and fine arts competitions. Students who choose USJ seek a college preparatory curriculum with extensive extracurricular programs that provide a high level of participation. An education at USJ prepares students for the most academically selective colleges and scholarships. Our students not only are accepted at a college of their choice; they also find that they are well prepared to succeed in college. 100% of USJ students attend college, with 95% entering four-year institutions and 5% entering two-year institutions. Our faculty and students use technology at all grade levels as tools to enhance learning. At both the Lower and Upper/Middle School campuses, classrooms are equipped with interactive projectors and whiteboards, so teachers visually can instruct the entire class at one time. Lower School teachers can bring a mobile iPad cart into their classroom when needed. Both campuses also have wireless Internet. The teaching of character development, good citizenship, and leadership begins with the youngest students at USJ and is stressed at all grade levels. Lower School students have character education classes as part of their curriculum. The Advisory System in the Middle and Upper Schools offers students academic and personal support. It provides opportunities for discussion to promote good character and a greater sense of school community. Students learn in an environment of trust and responsibility. They do not need a lock on their locker, nor do they worry about leaving a book bag outside of a classroom. Upper School students formed a student Honor Council to emphasize that student conduct is a matter of honor. Each year, students pledge to follow an honor code, which is predicated on the assumption that all students are honorable young men and women who have the right to be trusted. View full school

  6. Cyril Jackson is an ambitious, successful, and inclusive community school with a national and international reputation for providing a high standard of education. Our staff is highly committed, hardworking, and motivated. We have limitless expectations for our pupils and ourselves, and we strive for excellence in all that we do. The school is a unique place and is regularly described as warm, friendly, and welcoming. Our diverse curriculum lays the foundations for every child to succeed, and we offer an inspiring combination of opportunities, outstanding pastoral care, and high expectations, all delivered within a happy, safe, and supportive environment. Our monitoring systems carefully track pupils’ progress, and we ensure that targeted and personalized learning is promptly and appropriately introduced. Pupils are actively involved in decisions about their learning and wellbeing. In our caring and stimulating atmosphere, students are inspired to reach their full potential - intellectually, physically, spiritually, and ethically. At Cyril Jackson, all our children will study the 2014 National Curriculum for both core and foundation stage subjects. In the Foundation Stage children will experience the seven areas of learning that are required. These areas underpin the organization of the learning environment the activities provided for children and the monitoring of children's progress and development. In Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, children are taught all the elements of the newly required syllabus of the 2014 National Curriculum for both core (English, Maths, and Science) and foundation subjects (history, geography, music, art, physical education (PE), design technology and religious education). At Cyril Jackson, we have worked hard to ensure that the change to the new national curriculum has been smooth and through our planning, we have endeavored to ensure that all learning is matched to the individual needs of our children. As far as possible a cross-curricular, thematic approach is used to teach the ‘core’ and ‘foundation’ subjects. A theme is selected and applied across a year group each term. By adding this dimension to learning we can provide opportunities for key skills to develop across the curriculum and to cultivate creative thinking. There are times when some children need additional support during their school life. Through our special needs program, and with assistance from parents/carers, outside agencies, and local special schools, we endeavor to identify promptly a child’s particular needs, so that individual programs can be provided when appropriate. Cyril Jackson has been designated as a school specializing in meeting Speech and Language needs. We have 20 identified children who travel from across the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to work in classes across the whole age range and receive additional help from speech therapists. This is of huge benefit to the school as a whole because it helps the development of every child by providing a greater understanding of language. We ensure that problems are identified as early as possible - the earlier action is taken the more quickly support can be given. If a child has been identified as having a special educational need, they will have full access to the National Curriculum. Partnership work with parents/carers is crucial in this process. The school endeavors to make all adjustments to ensure every pupil has access to all aspects of school life. Pupils attain the highest levels of achievement, of which they are capable, by being offered a safe, inclusive, supportive, and stimulating learning environment. Irrespective of need, pupils are included in all aspects of school life and are encouraged to be independent and responsible citizens ready for the challenges of a changing future. Pupils are aware of their own needs, whilst also being respectful and understanding of the needs of others around them. They encourage and support each other to succeed in their learning and to develop their confidence, self-esteem, and future aspirations.

View full school

  10. View full school
