Founded on faith by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, our mission is to prepare confident young women dedicated to academic excellence, Christian service, and social justice. Through a faith-based curriculum, we promote a thorough knowledge of the Catholic faith, developing prepared intellectually and enriched students spiritually. At IWHS, we encourage each student to utilize the tools that we provide her to create her own story. Our modular schedule allows students to customize their academic journey to balance college-preparatory coursework, dual enrollment courses at UIW, athletics, extracurricular activities, and community service. Young women who graduate from IWHS are highly prepared for success in college while remaining committed to their faith and sensitive to others' needs. In 1881 the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word founded Incarnate Word College as a higher education center for young women. The college was admitted to membership in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1919 and joined the Texas Association of Colleges as a senior college in 1920. The Graduate Studies division was established in 1950. Male students were first admitted into the college's undergraduate programs in 1970. Incarnate Word College became the University of the Incarnate Word in 1996. Today, UIW is a Hispanic-Serving Institution under federal guidelines. UIW is the largest Catholic university in Texas and the fourth-largest private university in the state. The enrollment reflects South Texas's diversity, as more than 60 percent of the students are from racial or ethnic minority groups. UIW is ranked No. 1 among faith-based universities in the conferring of bachelor's degrees to Hispanics by the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine and No. 6 nationally among all private, not-for-profit universities. The first Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, three young French women motivated by the love of God and their recognition of God's presence in each person, came to San Antonio in 1869 to minister to the sick and the poor. Their spirit of Christian service is perpetuated in the University of the Incarnate Word primarily through teaching and scholarship, encompassing research and artistic expression.
