  2. The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) was founded in 1959 through the concerted efforts, vision, and energy of the late Bishop Gordon Begbie and a dedicated band of 'founding parents' who firmly believed in the need for a regional Anglican School to be based in the Illawarra. Those families' vision and philosophy to fully develop young people spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically in order that they might enter society with strong Christian Foundations to lead and serve are still followed today. The school has come a long way in its short history thanks to the leadership of successive administrations and its many families' dedicated support. On its opening day on 3 February 1959, the first Headmaster, the late Rev R F Bosanquet, and two staff welcomed 28 boys into a close and caring community. In 1975, the school became co-educational when it amalgamated with SCEGGS `Gleniffer Brae'. TIGS now has an enrolment of approximately 1000 students, Preparatory to Year 12, housed in a modern educational setting with a well-established and acknowledged reputation for delivering programs of excellence. As educators, our responsibility is to prepare young people for their lives after school as adults in a world characterized by unpreceded rates of change. Technological advancement, globalization, and significant political and economic change mean that their social and professional futures will differ from previous generations and will be more mobile and globally connected than ever before. Schools must respond to this future reality for their students. We are very proud that at TIGS, we continue to embrace these challenges through our clear focus on teaching and learning, the embedding of wellbeing for our students and staff enabling them to achieve their best, our attention to staff development, and through our review and further enhancement of our learning environments. Our current Strategic Vision and accompanying master plan for our site, TIGS21, place us in a strong position to continue to meet the challenge of educating young people into the future. It is a huge privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of educating young people. At TIGS, we are focussed on providing relevant and enriching learning that equips students with the new skills, essential knowledge, and underpinning values needed to shape their future and contribute meaningfully to both local and global communities. We are proud to observe our Alumni, leaving TIGS and operating as next-generation thinkers, innovators, and creators. The School Motto, "from strength to strength," captured the intention of our founding families in 1959. Today, this is expressed through the Statement of Mission, and its three Core Values are The achievement of academic excellence in a caring environment that is founded on Christian belief and behavior so that students are equipped to act with wisdom, compassion, and justice as faithful stewards of our world. TIGS community welcomes students and families that share these values. We look forward to the achievements of our next 50 years - maintaining the traditions while applying the school's values to the future's opportunities and challenges. I warmly encourage you to join us for an information session or tour to see for yourself what TIGS has to offer your son or daughter. In November 2004, the School Council met with representatives from the TIGS Community to revisit the school's statements of purpose. The ideas generated at those subsequent meetings were collated by the Headmaster and a sub-committee of the School Council to prepare a Statement of Mission and Values. In preparing the document, the School Council sought: To capture the school's unique qualities To plan future directions To provide a platform for the future growth of the school The achievement of academic excellence in a caring environment founded on Christian belief and behavior. Students are equipped to act with wisdom, compassion, and justice as faithful stewards of our world. View full school

  5. It is an honor to serve the Illawarra region since 1999 as an extension to Amity College in Sydney. Similar to other Amity College campuses, Amity College Illawarra is a co-educational school that serves students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Illawarra Primary offers an exceptional education in the areas of English, Maths, Science, HSIE, PDHPE, and CAPA, which is extensively taught throughout the scholastic year. Amity College students participate in many school sports. Each term students are involved in different sports, such as martial arts, tennis, gymnastics, and AFL. Our Sports Policy allows teaching staff to organize and develop many enjoyable social and sporting initiatives that are always enjoyed by all our students and promote the health and well-being of our students. With two outdoor fields for sports, a gym, and a mini basketball court, students are never short of recreational enjoyment. We are a colorful and vibrant school with our Folk Dancing Group that attends many multicultural festivals and other events. Our students are also involved in activities such as Clean Up Australia Day, Anzac Ceremony commemorations, and Harmony Day. As a school, we utilize the Amity Coolsis online information system that provides parents and students real-time information on the academic and behavioral progress of the student. Students and parents can access data at the same time of submission by the subject teacher. Following in the tradition of Amity College’s academic excellence, Amity College Illawarra students achieved remarkable results in 2014 with more than fifty awards such as Distinction, Credit, and Merit, awarded in ICAS. As the school has grown, so have the initiatives to provide students with many diverse learning opportunities such as those offered by the Differentiated Learning Programs and the Music Program. With the current number of students at 170, Amity College Illawarra is a multi-cultural school, whose teaching staff are committed to building professional relationships with parents to help promote open, challenging, and harmonious learning experiences where students can reach their learning expectations and outcomes. Since its establishment, the primary aim of Amity College has been to provide a platform that would help students realize their potential and become leaders of tomorrow. At Amity College, we strive to create a school environment that is conducive to learning in all aspects of life. The inspiring and compassionate nature of the staff coupled with a diverse and challenging curriculum foster critical thinking and set the foundations of academic excellence. While various extra-curricular activities allow students to develop their talents, comprehensive student pastoral care programs and strong ties with parents contribute towards character development and reaching full potential. Our vision at Amity College is the achievement of academic and creative excellence as well as the nurturing of moral and socially responsible students to enable them to participate as informed, active, caring, and contributing citizens in our democratic Australian society. This vision is also captured in the College’s fresh and vibrant logo an open book that symbolizes the acts of learning, inquiry, exploring, achieving, and inspiring. At Amity College, we are ambitious to establish a culture of excellence in the light of diversity and harmony, which are expressed through the lively colors exhibited in the College’s logo.
