Since 1952 when Huazhong Institute of Technology was founded, or even further back when the German doctor Erich Paulun founded the German Medical School (later as Tongji Medical University ) in Shanghai in 1907, HUST has never stopped its journey to excellence. The past 50 years have witnessed how HUST rapidly developed itself into a dynamic, ambitious, and innovative, comprehensive research university. On the 470 hectares, a forest-like campus is scattering over 100 labs focusing on many research areas. The campus is the home to more than ten state-level research platforms, including Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), the Center for Gravitational Experiments, and the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center; Medicine and Engineering are the great pillars of HUST interwoven with arts and humanities, paints a colorful picture of our academics and research efforts. In 2000, the university merged with Tongji Medical University (founded in 1907) and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute (founded in 1952) to form the new Huazhong University of Science and Technology as it is known today. HUST students have won prizes in various national and international competitions. WANG Liran of the School of Management won the "Future Business Leader" award at the final 2014 CIMA held in Bombay on August 6, 2014. The CIMA Global Business Challenge is known as "the business Olympics for college students". At the World Final of the 23rd World Memory Championship 2014 held in Hainan on December 13, SHU Yubiao, a HUST physics sophomore, and MAO Hongwei of the School of Law was crowned as "World Memory Masters." In recent years, the growing social impact of HUST on social life has helped the university admit the best possible students. HUST graduates have enjoyed popularity among employers in the job market, and the employment rate has reached above 95%. The university has three affiliated hospitals, including Union Hospital, Tongji Hospital, and Liyuan Hospital. The Affiliated Union Hospital and Tongji Hospital are large modern comprehensive hospitals that integrate clinic medical service, teaching, scientific research, and training. Our university is among the first higher institutions in China entitled to offer doctoral and postgraduate degrees, to assess and confer the titles of professor, associate professor, and also doctoral supervisor, and has already established a complete and optimized advanced education system from undergraduate to graduate programs, from doctoral to post-doctoral programs, and from full-time to adult-education programs. Our research strength is witnessing a constant increase year by year. The national social science research work of CCNU ranks top 10 for three consecutive years. Its social science research work by the Ministry of Education ranks top 6 for four consecutive years. Ranking No.8 in the Fourth Social Science Prominent Scientific Result Award, a series of our research results have won prizes, including two first prizes of the Natural Science Award by the Chinese Ministry of Education and six first prizes of Hubei provincial Natural Science Award. We have established close relations with many key universities and research institutes. We have conducted school-to-school exchanges and extensive academic cooperation with more than 100 universities from over 70 countries such as the USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, Russia, France, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, and Vietnam. Foreign experts and teachers are regularly invited to teach at the university. In recent years, the university teachers have continuously been sent abroad for further study, a majority of whom have returned home to become the backbone in their teaching and research field. A good number of them are active on the international academic rostrum and have made admirable contributions to science, technology, culture, and education exchanges between China and other nations worldwide. On September 21st, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) issued the Notice on the Release of Name List of Building World-class Universities and World-class Courses (“Double World Class”). Politics and Chinese language and literature are on the name list of building world-class courses. The construction plan of the world-class courses building the university of CCNU strictly followed the deployment of building world-class universities and world-class courses of the State Council. To achieve this aim, the school strives to explore a practical approach to building world-class courses with Chinese characteristics. As the school is now selected to build world-class courses, CCNU will take this opportunity and divide its disciplines into three levels and four tiers striking to be built world-class and national first-rate separately. CCNU will also perfect the high-level discipline systems that are in line with the school’s educational goal.
