Welcome to Drayton Park Primary School. We are a vibrant community school, in the heart of Highbury and Islington. Our families come from a very broad range of backgrounds and we pride ourselves on our shared commitment to each other and our school. We care deeply about nurturing our children as individuals, ensuring all can be happy and thrive as learners and friends. At Drayton Park, we are all about learning, community, and creativity. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school. Our community is fantastically diverse. We aim to help children develop strong personal identities, as well as empathy and respect for others. It is our shared commitment to understanding and supporting each other that brings us together. Inclusivity is also about the expectations we have of pupils. We believe very strongly that children's ability is not a set thing. We respond to pupils' current capabilities in innovative ways. We give children choice in their learning, enabling us to provide personal feedback and support. We also challenge children's expectations of themselves. Where children have limited ambitions or a limited sense of their abilities, we intend to open them up to possibility and potential. We have high expectations of everyone at Drayton Park. Crucially, we teach children to have high expectations of themselves. Our curriculum is rich and creative, including specialist teaching in art, dance, and drama, Spanish, and PE. We run an exciting program of clubs, ranging from ice-skating to woodcraft, history, sewing, and cooking. Three years ago we built a separate art and community building, from which we run a broad range of family learning events, including a 'stay and play facility. We know that your child's years in Primary school and your relationship with us as parents are immensely important. In many ways, this will be the most formative time in your child's life. We will be working with you to help your child grow from nursery age, through to the verge of secondary school. We consider that responsibility to be a huge privilege. At Drayton Park, your child will learn, get creative, make friends, have fun and be happy. You will see their world expand enormously. Learning in the EYFS framework is defined into seven areas, three prime areas, and four specific areas. We focus on developing the children's skills in the prime areas first, and then the specific areas. Our work in the Early Years Foundation Stage emphasizes the value of play as the medium through which a child achieves most in the Early Years. Play motivates children to learn and helps them make sense of the world through direct experience. Through play, children can encounter all areas of the curriculum and develop their growing social skills. Through careful planning, we ensure that the children have a wide range of challenging and stimulating experiences and play opportunities, which will excite their curiosity, interest, and motivation. Planning includes outdoor play, which promotes and enables physical activities, encourages social and moral development and self-esteem and confidence, as well as providing for children who learn better outside and allowing children time to consolidate skills they have learned. When planning for learning experiences and activities through play, we start with the child. We look at their needs, background, previous experiences, and stages of development. Starting with the child ensures that all children are included in all activities and not denied opportunities because of gender, cultural background, social circumstances, or special needs. We believe in equal access to the curriculum for all children. We also believe that children learn best when things have real meaning for them, so we plan for children's particular interests. At Drayton Park, we follow the National Curriculum for Primary Schools. In years 1-6, we teach the curriculum through a series of topics, which change every half-term. As we are a one-and-a-half form entry school, with some mixed-age classes, we run our topics on a two-year cycle, so no child repeats a topic. Each topic is run across the three classes in a 'Phase', so the children in Years 1 and 2 do the same topic together, as do those in Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6. At Drayton Park, children are given opportunities to learn about and discuss issues such as healthy eating, Fair Trade, and ethical purchasing, energy consumption, and recycling. Opportunities for learning about sustainability are embedded in the statutory National Curriculum subjects of citizenship, design, and technology, geography, and science, although it is a topic that cuts across all subjects. At Drayton Park we engage in a rigorous self-assessment process, looking at all aspects of our work. A key indicator of our performance is how well our pupils achieve academically. Drayton Manor offers a wide range of opportunities, academic, practical, cultural, and sporting to all students. The school thinks and works in terms of individual students, their personal development, their academic tuition, their interests, and their career needs. One of our missions is to ensure our students are role models and members of the public and visitors to the school often compliment us on the exemplary conduct of our students. Just one example of this is when one of our teachers was walking from one part of the school to another with a pile of books and was offered assistance by students on seven occasions. We are confident that this mentality of doing good things with no expectation of reward will go a long way to making our student's ideal members of the community and serve them and the country well in the future. What is also impressive about our students is how much they willingly contribute to running societies, coaching sports teams, helping with Open Evenings, Parents’ Evenings, and many other events, and in many other ways. Drayton Manor is a calm and purposeful place where good manners and good behavior are considered essential. We do not doubt that this moral education and the way it is combined with academic prowess is one of the main reasons that the school is so oversubscribed. The school has very high standards and everyone knows what is expected of them and this helps create what Ofsted describes as “the extremely harmonious atmosphere”. This allows us to support individuals so they make outstanding progress. Our teachers have excellent subject knowledge and are adept at, not only preparing our students for examinations but at building their confidence so they are very well prepared for their future lives, whatever their chosen path. If you were to visit Drayton Manor, you would see lesson after lesson where students are focussed on their studies and working in an orderly and thoughtful manner. In our Sixth Form for example, where virtually every student in Year 13 will go on to university, you would see a very high level of discussion reflecting the students’ mature approach to their study, their diligence, and how seriously they plan their work. The skillful way in which our teachers share their knowledge, experience, and passion for their subjects, the stimulating curriculum, and imaginative resources and the fact that our students feel secure and safe in and around the school are factors that are all combined to ensure that they make outstanding progress. West Drayton Academy provides an outstanding education for the children. We believe that every member of the community matters and together we can achieve more. We have a richly diverse school family and the times we spend working and celebrating together are some of our most precious. At West Drayton Academy, our curriculum aims to promote children's well-being and development in all areas: spiritual-moral cultural mental, and physical and to prepare children for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life. To do this, we have designed children's learning through challenges expressed as questions. At the start of each topic, children consider how they will complete the challenge by identifying further questions that they would like to explore. At the end of each learning challenge, children share their discoveries in a variety of ways. These include a production an invitation to parents/carers to share in a presentation with food a booklet giving a presentation to another class and holding an exhibition. To bring learning to life, we plan rich learning experiences for all year groups. We want our children to experience a wide range of learning opportunities such as: visit a farm go to the seaside hear music performed live meet an author, poet, musician, artist, scientist, engineer, etc visit a museum perform on a stage sing in a choir volunteer support a charity. At West Drayton Primary School, all children are equally valued and respected. We are committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress for all of our pupils whatever their needs or abilities. We recognize that many children will have SEN at some time during their school life and believe that children can be helped to overcome their difficulties if they are provided with a differentiated, broad, and balanced curriculum and appropriate intervention. We use a range of approaches to meet the needs of pupils with SEN including differentiation of the curriculum, scaffolding e.g. through the use of visual support or concrete apparatus, small group work, 1:1 support, or teaching. At West Drayton Primary School, we are proud of how children embrace school life in a positive and caring manner.
