  1. St Dominic’s has provided post 16 education in Harrow since 1979 and over that period has developed specialist teaching and support that is recognized for its excellence in the local area and beyond. In our last inspection, we were judged to be an ‘outstanding’ College and have been awarded many national accolades over recent years. The campus gives us a university feel and allows students to concentrate on their studies and to make the very best use of our superb academic facilities. The two years of study post 16 are the most important of any to date in a young person’s educational journey. Post 16 courses remain a benchmark qualification. When students arrive with us in September each year I expect that they will work hard from day one to fulfill the demands of their courses. The support both in and out of the classroom is exemplary and providing the partnership between student, College and home are right then they will be successful with us and achieve highly at the end of the two-year program. We provide all our students with the best opportunity to achieve the highest possible examination grades as well as to develop spiritually and personally. We are a confidently Catholic institution, clear in our beliefs and values and the importance of Jesus Christ in our daily lives. We are also welcoming of other faith groups and believe that our diverse faith community is enriching and makes us the very distinctive community that we are. We give priority to students from our two partner schools, Salvatorian College and Sacred Heart Language College. We then offer places to Catholics from the local area and to other faith groups who wish to pursue their sixth form education in a Christian context and who will support the ethos and mission of our College. St Dominic’s came into existence initially as a Convent School for Girls on the Mount Estate in Harrow-on-the-Hill in the 19th century. The school was established in 1879. The Dominican Nuns led by Mother Catherine Philip Bathurst OP were carrying out a direct request by Cardinal Manning, the Archbishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster, to have a Catholic Girls School in Harrow. The Dominican nuns were committed to creating the opportunity for girls to have a good education and access to higher education. The College is the holder of several national awards. With the establishment of formal National inspection systems, St Dominic’s rose to the challenge of achieving outstanding status by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster for the delivery of Catholic Education. The 2008 OFSTED Inspection too judged it to be Outstanding, a distinction it has held on to ever since. Indeed the College is now at the very top of the league of Sixth Form Colleges for ‘Excellence’ in its educational provision and its A level results. Teaching and learning are at the center of our work at St Dominic's. We have an incredibly strong record of academic success, but as well as achieving excellent results, we want to have a positive experience of learning. Our teachers, as expert practitioners, continually seek to develop their practice and equip you with the skills to learn independently. St Dominic's has a very strong tradition of enrichment and you will benefit from a wide variety of educational visits and outside speakers in addition to your normal lessons. You will develop your skills in ways that help you to learn as individuals and to prepare you to continue your studies in Higher Education or to move into employment. We frequently seek your views about teaching, learning, and assessment and we use these to continue to improve lessons and other aspects of learning.
  2. St Dominic’s Catholic College was founded by the Dominican Sisters at Northcote in 1952 and later transferred to our present Henderson site in 1967. It continues the Dominicans’ proud 800+-year-old tradition of service to education. Our Catholic Christian outlook on life and belief in the Gospel values underpin the spirit of our school, reflected in the caring attitudes of members of our community as they live their faith and in the formal religious and educational experiences offered. Our Religious Education classes emphasize the ethos of the Dominican Order and while being fun and informative, also ensure that our girls will make informed decisions in their future lives and become mature Catholic women whose lives reflect their faith. Weekly Eucharistic celebrations and regular retreats for all levels involve everyone in the school, and students are welcome to use the chapel before and after school. St Dominic’s College will challenge students to achieve excellence by delivering a holistic education based on the living values of the Catholic Dominican tradition. Subject choices in the senior years are broad. Students are encouraged to take a balanced range of courses and then to further refine their interests and strengths as they move through the College. We are NZQA Accredited and students are prepared for the full range of National Qualifications and Certificates. Special courses leading to National Certificates are offered through the Work & Community Skills, Pathways, and Gateway Programmes. The Junior College curriculum, for Years 7-10 (ages 11-14 years) is broad, allowing studying a wide range of subjects. The core subjects of the curriculum are English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Technology, Physical Education, the Arts, Health, and Religious Education – with additional preliminary study in languages other than English, such as French, Japanese, Chinese, and Te Reo Maori. The College also offers learning support for students who require extra help, particularly in literacy and numeracy, whilst Extension classes challenge and extend our high achieving students and students may also be invited to begin NCEA Level 1 in Year 10. St Dominic's offers a wide range of subjects within its senior curriculum covering NCEA Levels 1, 2, 3, and Scholarship Level 4. Students choose their subjects in consultation with their form teacher, academic coach, and their dean to ensure that they are following appropriate qualification pathways. The Senior College curriculum option choices for Years 11 to 13 are broad. Students are encouraged to take a balanced course at Year 11 and then to further refine their interests and strengths as they move up through the College. St Dominic’s College is a Catholic girls’ school situated in West Auckland, for girls from Years 7-13. In addition, assistance with personal concerns is readily available from our College counselors and a Public Health Nurse, and the College is in contact with Maori and Pacific Island community groups. Celebrating your daughter's achievement is what we like to best at St Dominic’s Catholic College in Henderson. We encourage your daughter to foster her talents while striving to make a difference with her talent and skills. Our vision is to develop confident young women to contribute positively to society and live through the values of the Catholic Dominican tradition. Our school is set in spacious grounds with first-class facilities, including a new chapel, swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis and netball courts, IT center, music suite, an international students center, a comprehensive library, fully-equipped science laboratories, and purpose-built performing arts facilities. Modern teaching resources and specialist rooms, in conjunction with highly motivated teaching staff, create an environment that fosters a love and enjoyment of learning which is reflected in our students' consistently high standard of academic achievement in all levels of NCEA. With a roll restricted to 1000 students, St Dominic’s offers a happy and safe environment, with a sense of community and identity that encourages learning in its fullest sense - in the classrooms, in the chapel, and the wide range of co-curricular sporting and cultural activities. Our students enjoy a high rate of success in national examinations and, later, at tertiary institutions. They also gain leadership opportunities through a variety of programs, such as Sports Captains, Catholic Youth Leaders, Student Councils, Peer Mentoring, Body Image Leaders, and The Duke of Edinburgh Schemes.
  3. St. Dominic’s is an inclusive, ethnically diverse two-form entry school where all children are encouraged to achieve their full potential through a rich and varied curriculum. The school is a vibrant and happy place to be, with lots of exciting things going on. We hope that every child will leave our school with high aspirations for their lives, with a strong self-belief that enables them to meet the demands of a changing world and make positive contributions. We aim for all our children to achieve high standards academically and therefore provide an exciting and challenging curriculum that will enable them to do so. Parents and carers play an important part in the life of our school and are always made to feel welcome. As a Catholic school, we aim to provide a Catholic education for all our pupils. At a Catholic school, Catholic doctrine and practice permeate every aspect of the school’s activity. The Catholic character of the school’s education must be fully supported by all families in the school. All applicants are therefore expected to give their full, unreserved, and positive support for the aims and ethos of the school. St Dominic’s is a Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary School. A voluntary aided (VA) school is a state-funded school in England and Wales in which a foundation or trust, which in the case of St Dominic’s is the Westminster Diocesan Education Service of the Catholic Church, contributes to building costs and has a substantial influence in the running of the school. We recognize individual differences, act to raise self-esteem, and ensure equal access to the curriculum. We believe that every teacher is a teacher of every child or young person including those with SEND. As a school we recognize these disabilities may refer to learning or physical impairment. We also recognize that extra provision may need to be made for the needs of gifted children. In addition, we recognize that children with social and emotional mental health (SEMH) are included in the definition of special education needs. At St Dominic’s we aim to raise the aspirations of and expectations for all pupils with SEND. We provide a focus on outcomes for children and young people and not just on hours of provision/support. Pupil Premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. St. Dominic’s is a Catholic school that seeks to live out the values of Jesus Christ. We promote these values by our words and deeds, and Catholic doctrine and practice, therefore, permeate every aspect of the school’s activity. Parent View gives you the chance to tell Ofsted what you think about your child’s school, from the quality of teaching to dealing with bullying and poor behavior. The survey can be completed at any time you don’t have to wait until the school is being inspected. We provide a Catholic curriculum, which is broad and balanced, recognizing that every pupil is unique and is created in the image of God. Our curriculum is designed to enable every pupil to discern their vocation and to be well-equipped to follow it as active citizens in service to the world. Catholic Religious Education is the “core of the core curriculum” (Pope St John Paul II) and the foundation of the entire educational process. We also provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities and strong pastoral support. We incorporate democratic principles, value the rule of law, support individual liberty and foster a community in which different faiths and beliefs are respected. No one likes to receive criticism but an open organization will always be willing to listen to concerns and anxieties and be ready to learn from them if appropriate. In a school, most concerns are likely to be expressed by parents of its pupils, though some may come from pupils themselves, parishioners, or other interested parties such as neighbors or users of the premises. Nearly all concerns or questions can be resolved very quickly and informally if parents feel able to voice them as soon as they arise. The more information the School gives to the parents the less scope there is for misunderstanding. As part of this information, parents could be told that feedback is always welcome and that, therefore, they are warmly encouraged to voice any concerns straightaway, preferably to the person concerned. In most cases, discussion, explanation, further information – or an apology if appropriate – will resolve the issue. Every effort should be made to allay concerns at this level and with the least possible formality. The ideal is that no concern should ever become a formal complaint. The Diocese of Westminster owns the land and the Governing Body are trustees and have a duty to look after the school buildings and site on behalf of the Bishop. Parents and carers are asked for contributions towards the cost of maintaining and improving the school buildings and grounds. The Governing Body is the legal employer of all the staff who works at the School. This is very different from community schools where the local authority owns the land and buildings and the local authority employs the staff.

View full school
  10. View full school
