In 1956 there was a growing demand for quality Catholic education within the West Rand. St Catherine’s Convent, whose patron saint is St Catherine of Sienna, was founded in 1957 by the Order of the Dominican Sisters, who have a tradition of over 700 years of commitment to education. The school first opened to one hundred and eighty girls and boys from grade one to grade four. A year later, the school had grown to 254 learners and continued to grow in the years following its inception. St Catherine’s Convent is proud of its facilities and offers the learner many opportunities to learn in a comfortable and soothing, yet modern environment. The majority of our classes are fully equipped with all the audio-visual requirements necessary for facilitating learning, such as Data Projectors, White Boards, televisions, and DVD players. Learners each have their desk and locker as we strive to create a home-from-home environment for all our learners. We also have a state-of-the-art Auditorium for functions. This use of technology may also be found in our fully equipped Computer Room and Physical Science Laboratory. To create a well-rounded learner, St Catherine’s Convent also has a purpose-built dancing studio, where learners may receive lessons in Modern, Tap, and Hip-Hop Dancing. Our sporting facilities include a large swimming pool, tennis courts, and sports field. For the more culturally inclined learner, we have a well-equipped hall with modern sound and lighting equipment that will enhance any dramatic performance. St Catherine’s Convent offers an after-care service that has been successfully operating for almost 30 years. Our main aim is to create a safe and nurturing environment for those girls who are unable to be collected straight after school ends. The girls are divided into groups for optimal individual attention and structured supervision. These groups are: Grade 0 to Grade 3 and Grade 4 to Grade 6 Our program begins with a light lunch in the dining room at 13h00 for Grades 0-2 and 13h30 for Grades 3-6. Homework begins at 14h00 for the juniors. Homework is supervised and the children are encouraged to work on their homework individually at their own pace and are assisted wherever necessary by a qualified teacher. Whilst we endeavor to complete homework activities each day, projects and assignments need extra attention and are to be completed at home. Parents are required to sign homework books every day. When homework has been completed, the girls are encouraged to participate in other activities and games such as tennis, swimming on Fridays, DVDs (these may be watched only if the girls wish), and other activities. Extra reading and homework-related problem solving are done on a Friday afternoon. The girls are encouraged to be independent and interact with each other respectably and lovingly. After Care ends at 17h00. In the event of a parent not being able to collect their child by the said time, arrangements may be made by contacting the Aftercare Supervisor before 17:00. St Catherine’s Convent offers a free service for the high school learners by which girls who cannot be collected directly after school attend High School Study. It is a safe and nurturing environment where the girls are encouraged to complete homework or consult with a teacher on specific days for extra assistance. Should you wish your daughter to have lunch, lunches can be arranged. Whilst we endeavor to complete homework activities each day, projects and assignments need extra attention and are to be completed at home. Girls are discouraged from waiting outside the gate to be fetched and there is always someone on duty until 17h00 on the school grounds. Educators regularly attend both regional and national subject conferences to ensure that their knowledge is up to date and to enable every educator to deliver quality education. St Catherine’s Convent also participates in the IEB Cluster groups, which are regular meetings where groups of educators from different schools come together to standardize their assessment levels and to share resources. St. Catherine’s Senior School caters to girls from second class to sixth class. We are a fifteen-teacher school, including S.E.T. teachers and a Home School Community Liaison Teacher. St. Catherine’s Senior School is a primary school situated on Ratoath Road in Cabra West, Dublin 7. The school occupies the first floor of the building, which was built by the Dominican Sisters in 1944. The school hall is shared with the Infant School on the ground floor. In April 2006, the Dominican sisters transferred the school to the Laurence O’Toole Trust, under the patronage of The Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin. St. Catherine’s continues to preserve the Dominican tradition of education aiming to develop each girl to her full potential – academically, spiritually, socially, and emotionally, in a spirit of trust and truth. There are currently ten mainstream classes and three S.E.T. teachers in the school. A Home School Community Liaison Coordinator is shared, as is the School Completion Coordinator. As a feeder school for St. Dominic’s College, sixth class pupils usually transfer there for their secondary school education. Parents are encouraged to become involved in the life of the school and their children’s learning. Several courses are organized by the H.S.C.L. Coordinator including cookery (with a focus on healthy, cost-saving meals), fitness classes, and computer classes. There is a parent and toddler group also. Parents are involved in Maths for Fun, Story Sacks, and paired reading initiatives. The school has developed a strong link with the local Library and is a member of CBI (Children’s Books Ireland). The school has for the fifth year running received a Plaque of Excellence for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths. Our School has a large PE hall, which can cater to a range of sporting activities. The hall is also used for Christmas concerts, events, and school activities that involve the entire school population. There is also a large playground, which provides ample space for children to play and engage in playground games. The playground is separated into class groupings for safety. St Catherine’s in Twickenham combines over 100 years of experience in Independent education with a modern curriculum that prepares our students for success in the 21st Century. We are a Catholic girls’ school where every person is a valued member of a happy, vibrant community, comprising students from much different faith and ethnic backgrounds. We need to be a caring and supportive community in which students are happy, confident, and inspired to meet challenges. Our school motto ‘Non-Verba sed Facta’ (Not Words but Deeds) is the bedrock of who and what we are: words are important, but they are not enough it is ‘doing’ that so often shows that we mean what we say. St Catherine’s girls are certainly ‘doers’ they involve themselves enthusiastically and wholeheartedly in everything, which strengthens them as individuals but also deepens the community spirit which is tangible when you walk through the school gates. The usual ages of entry are 3, 11, and 16. Occasional vacancies occur at other ages. Early registration is advised for entry at all ages. There are Open Afternoons and Evenings throughout the year to which we invite prospective pupils and their parents. Visits can also be arranged at other times. The school can accept applications from any area and is happy to accept advance registrations for younger children at any time. Pupils of other ages may also be accepted into the school, particularly if their family has moved into the area. Parents and pupils are invited to visit the school and meet the staff. Arrangements are then made for pupil assessment, which will become more formal depending on the age of the pupil. Information regarding the pupil's current education is required before an offer of a place being made and the school will request a reference from the pupil's current school. Most pupils from our Prep department will proceed into the Senior School. For all candidates, entry to the Senior School is by written examination in January, before entry in September. Applicants take one-hour papers in Mathematics and English. All papers are designed to bring out the skills and potential of the candidates, whatever they may have covered in the past. Places are offered based on performance in the examination, a report from the girl's present school, and an informal interview with the Headmistress. Central to everything that we do in Prep is our belief that every child is an individual with different curriculum strengths and talents. Our broad, balanced, and challenging curriculum ensures that all our pupils make excellent progress academically while ensuring that our pupils thrive in a nurturing and caring environment. The Senior School has three forms each year, with a maximum of twenty students in each form. A third of the girls who join the Senior School in Year 7 come from our own Prep Department, which has one form in each year, while two-thirds come from other preparatory and primary schools. Some students are admitted into other year groups at different times, depending on availability. Teaching is organized in academic departments, the heads of which report to the Headmistress and the Director of Studies. Student's academic progress is closely monitored and parents receive four grade sheets and two detailed reports throughout the year as well as having a formal opportunity to meet their daughter's teachers every year to discuss progress. Higher Education and Careers advice is provided throughout the Senior School, with more focused guidance leading up to and during the process of selecting and applying to university. The School has an extensive extra-curricular program, encompassing sport and other physical activities, the creative and performing arts including music, drama, and community service. Experiences outside the classroom allow our students to learn, have fun and develop new and productive relationships with their peers, their teachers, and other adults. St. Catherine’s is a denominational primary school built in 1966 which serves the South East of Edinburgh. The school catchment area comprises the areas of Gracemount and Burdiehouse. The current school roll is approximately 206. There are seven classes in the school, P1 – P7. The current nursery roll is approximately 40. There are two classes in the nursery (Morning and Afternoon). We are committed to helping all our students reach their full potential by fostering a common vision that embraces faith formation, teaching and learning, personal and social development, and partnership between the school and the wider community. Place2Be is a charity that works in schools to improve the confidence and wellbeing of children to support their learning. We work together with parents, teachers, and children to help this happen. At St. Catherine’s there is a Place2Be room where children can go to express and think about their worries, through talking, painting, drawing, and play. At Place2Be children are helped to find new ways of coping with difficulties they may have so that those difficulties don’t get in the way of their friendships or learning. There can be times when children can feel particularly sad, confused, fearful, or angry for a range of reasons and it is at these times that Place2Be at St.Catherine’s can be helpful. At St.Catherine’s Place2Be work with children on an ongoing one-to-one basis offering regular time-tabled support. All pupils can also find help with friendship issues and other worries by choosing to visit Place2Talk which offers short lunchtime sessions open to individual pupils or groups. At St.Catherine’s we can meet with SandBox with Toysyou to discuss any worries you may have about your child or children and the things that you feel may be getting in the way of their learning. At St.Catherine’s we also have A Place for Parents which can offer you support with any issue you may have and would like to discuss. Place2Be at St.Catherine’s also offers support to teachers and all school staff members via a Place2Think. This offers them the space to discuss any worries or concerns that they may have. In supporting children to feel better about themselves, we can help reduce the things that get in the way of them feeling good. In doing this we reduce the barriers to their learning so that they can learn more easily, as they become less preoccupied with what is worrying them. This supports St.Catherine’s educational goals for their pupils. This was a great achievement for our eco committee and everyone throughout the school. We have been working hard to ensure that our school is helping to look after the environment. The Eco committee includes pupils from Primary 3 through to Primary 7 and each member has a specific responsibility in the committee. These responsibilities range from chairperson to communicators. Over the last few years, the Eco Committee has made a lot of decisions to help the school become more environmentally friendly. We recycle our milk cartons and paper throughout the school and now recycle our fruit waste into our compost bin in the playground. Every year we have an Eco Week where we take part in lots of different eco-activities. In the past, we have joined in the Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign and we’ve taken part in litter-picking in our local area and school grounds. We’ve constructed bird feeders to hang in the playground using recycled milk cartons. St Catherine's is open to all families who seek an education based on Christian principles and standards. St Catherine's School was founded in 1896 when teacher Miss Jeanie Hood opened a school in Templeton Street, Castlemaine, which she named Castlemaine Ladies' College. At the instigation of Henry Langley, the first Anglican Bishop of Bendigo, his daughters Ruth, Aphra, and Nona took over the school in 1903. The Langley sisters later changed the school's name to St Catherine's Girls' College, Castlemaine, after the Anglican School at Waverley in Sydney, which Ruth and Nona had attended. In 1920, the College moved to Williams Road, Windsor, with 48 students enrolled. Soon after, purchased 'Kilbride House' (formerly known as Beaulieu) at 17 Heyington Place Toorak, the school is located today. The building was renamed Sherren House to recognize Mrs. Ruby Lawrence (nee Sherren), Matron, from 1923 to 1946. In 1948, Barbreck, at 33 Heyington Place, was acquired for use as a Junior School, making possible further extensions to the Secondary School. Student numbers increased to 400. Soon after, Miss Mary Davis was appointed as Principal and Headmistress until 1971. Based on educational research and our experience, we know single-sex education offers girls the most excellent chance to ignore stereotypes, develop healthy self-worth, and grow in confidence. Studies have concluded that all-girls' schools were more frequently associated with higher career aspirations, improved test scores, and better learning climates for students. Established in 1856, we are proud to be Australia's oldest independent Anglican girls' school. St Catherine's School was the vision of Mrs. Jane Barker, wife of the second bishop of Sydney, who wanted to provide an education for the daughters of clergy equal to boys. And so she did. Three girls were enrolled as boarders, and the school was named St Catherine's after the patron saint of scholars in 1856. Our teachers embrace the latest educational research balancing explicit instruction with engagement.
