Our core aims of Excellence, Community, and Opportunity are encapsulated in everything that we do and add value for all of our pupils. Through our strong pastoral system, we support and value every single boy and seek to draw from him the best of which he is capable.   2. Founded in 1884, Bangor University has a long tradition of academic excellence and a strong focus on the student experience. Around 11,000 students currently study at the University, with 650 teaching staff based within twenty-three Academic Schools. Bangor University is ranked in the top 40 in the UK for research*, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF recognized that more than three-quarters of Bangor's research is either world-leading or internationally excellent ahead of UK universities' average. The most recent National Student Survey (NSS 2017) results place Bangor amongst the UK's top 10 universities for student satisfaction (excluding specialist institutions). Bangor University has achieved a Gold Award, the highest rating possible, in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Bangor University is the only University in Wales to achieve this standard. The TEF assessment took into account teaching quality, learning environment, and student outcomes, and learning gain. We were judged to deliver consistently outstanding teaching, learning, and outcomes for our students, and our teaching is of the highest quality found in the UK. The University is made up of five Colleges housing twenty-two academic Schools, as well as over fifty specialist research centers, enabling the provision of courses spanning the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences. We offer hundreds of courses across the arts and the sciences. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching, and our courses and lecturers were rated third in the UK at the What Uni Student Choice Awards 2017. Bangor University is committed to be known globally as The Sustainable University. Much of what we do is based on our desire to bring sustainability to life, whether through our teaching, research, or public engagement. We have established The Sustainability Lab to lead on all aspects of sustainability across the University. We have ISO14001 and Green Dragon Level 5 accreditation for environmental management, and we are in the top 5% of the world's greenest universities, according to the Universitas Indonesia UI Green Metric. Bangor's location – close to the mountains and the sea – has been described as the best university setting in the UK. In 2016 North Wales was named the 4th best region in the world to visit by the travel guide Lonely Planet due to its stunning location and "shiny new adventure sports facilities." The University's recent investments in facilities and services include the Pontio Arts and Innovation Center. This multi-million-pound development includes teaching facilities, a theatre, cinema, bar, cafes, and innovation space. Pontio is also home to our Students' Union. Other investments include the opening of 600 brand new rooms at St Mary's Student Village and the redevelopment of the University's sports facilities at Canolfan Brailsford. WhatUni Student Choice AwardStudent life at Bangor University is vibrant and diverse. We have more than 150 Students' Union Clubs and Societies, covering a range of interests, activities, and sports, which means there is something for everyone. Student membership is free, so all our students can take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities offered. Our Clubs and Societies were named best in the UK at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2017. Students are given help and support from the moment they arrive. Our Student Services Centre provides advice and guidance on matters from money and housing to disability support, counseling, dyslexia, study skills, and local faith provision. Every year hundreds of second and third-year students are trained as Peer Guides to welcome new students to Bangor and provide practical advice to help them settle-in. The 2017 Times Higher Education survey places Bangor University 12th in the UK for student experience. Bangor University's accommodation was rated as the best in the UK at the What Uni Student Choice Awards 2016. We guarantee accommodation for first-year students who select Bangor as their Firm Choice and apply before the given deadline. We have close links with business and the NHS in Wales through the Best Cadwaladr University Health Board. The University is a primary provider of training and education for the NHS and is also one of the leading partners in the North Wales Clinical School. The University was founded as a direct result of a campaign in the late nineteenth century for higher education provision in Wales. Funds were raised by public subscription to establish a college of university rank in Bangor. An essential feature of its foundation was the voluntary contributions of local people, including farmers and quarrymen, from their weekly wages over some time. The University was founded as the University College of North Wales. It opened its doors on 18 October 1884 in an old coaching inn with 58 students and ten staff members. The students received degrees from the University of London until 1893 when the University of Wales, Bangor, became one of the three original constituent colleges of the University of Wales. The University was initially based in an old coaching inn called the Penrhyn Arms. In 1903, the city of Bangor donated a 10-acre site overlooking the city at Penrallt for a new building, and substantial sums of money were raised by local people to help meet the cost. The foundation stone for this was laid in 1907, and four years later, in 1911, the main building was opened, together with some arts and social science buildings and part of the Library. The Science Departments remained in the Penrhyn Arms for another fifteen years. In 1926 they moved to new purpose-built accommodation, which had been constructed with the assistance of funds raised by the North Wales Heroes Memorial. Today, we have over 11,000 students and 2,000 members of staff. Bangor University is committed to providing teaching of the highest quality, conducting research of the highest quality, taking good care of its students, and playing a full role in the broader community of Wales. A book tracing the fascinating history of Bangor University between 1884-2009 has been published. Written by former University Registrar, Dr. David Roberts, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the University, the book traces its rise from modest beginnings in October 1884 as the 'University College of North Wales', with just 58 students in the Penrhyn Arms, to an independent university with degree-awarding powers and 14,000 students and staff. Dr. David Roberts said: "It records the highs and lows, the successes and crises, the achievements and challenges in the University's history. Central to the story are the contributions of the leading figures in the University's development over the years, and the evolution of student life on the campus." "This is a university that gains strength from its history and its roots, but also one that has survived and grown by adapting to changing circumstances. It has faced many challenges over the years, and no doubt will do so in the future – but the commitment to the highest standards of learning, research, and scholarship are constant."
