Elmhurst is the oldest vocational dance school in the UK – its vision is to provide a world-renowned center of excellence for the training and education of classical ballet dancers for Birmingham Royal Ballet and other national and international dance companies. The new school has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of professional dance training, with all facilities on one five-acre campus. This move constituted a £20 million investment in the future of dance education in the UK and Elmhurst now fills what was a conspicuous void in vocational dance training in the Midlands. In October 2005, the school was officially opened. The Elmhurst Bistro is at the center of the school community. Diet is carefully monitored and the school has its catering staff who prepare all daily meals for the students of the school. All dietary needs are catered for and the school prides itself on the quality of the nutrition it provides. Talks by visiting nutritionists help to ensure that students are aware of the need to eat well-balanced meals. Academic tuition is delivered by an experienced staff of well-qualified, graduate teachers. This aspect of the school’s work is of central importance and students regularly achieve outstanding success in public examinations at GCSE and A-level. In 2015 73% received five or more GCSEs including English and Maths with a 100% pass rate at A-level. Form Tutors monitor the progress and welfare of each student, and pastoral care is provided through an extensive network of academic, residential, and vocational staff. Internal academic assessment takes place throughout the year, and parents receive regular written reports. As well as the annual parent-teacher evenings for each year group, parents are welcome to contact the school at any time over academic matters. A-level studies not only complement and enrich Elmhurst’s vocational training but, in the event of a career cut short by injury or a change of aspiration, they constitute a reliable insurance policy. If a student decides to go to university after his/her final year of training, every support is given by the Principal and her staff. At Elmhurst we are proud to have a truly dedicated teaching staff, all of whom come from a professional dance background and teach with passion and commitment. Our association with Birmingham Royal Ballet is of immense benefit to the school, further enhancing what we offer our pupils. We are fortunate to welcome Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers and staff to the school to teach daily classes, including pas de deux, regularly. The Moscow State Academy of Choreography, commonly known as The Bolshoi Ballet Academy, is one of Russia's oldest schools of ballet. Its history dates back to 1773 when Catherine the Great issued a Decree prescribing the introduction of first-ever "dancing classes" to the Moscow Foundling Home curriculum sponsored by the Empress herself. The Empress believed that the "perfection of upbringing and nurturing" is the surest way to make better people. Great credit for realizing Catherine's idea goes to Privy Councilor Ivan Ivanovich Betskoi, who was the President of the Imperial Academy of Arts and the Chief Curator of the Moscow Foundling Home. Currently, the Bolshoi Ballet Academy is a world-known center of education in ballet arts, a multi-level educational facility with evolving educational and methodological basis assuring seamless education of choreography students. The Academy offers educational programs of all levels of professional education in the field of choreography – intermediate vocational program (integrated vocational program in the field of choreography), as well as Bachelor degree course, Master degree course, Doctoral degree course, traineeship/internship courses, and supplementary vocational training programs (advanced training and vocational reskilling) and supplementary educational programs for children in the field of specialization of the Academy (including the pre-vocational training program "Art of Ballet"). The Bolshoi Ballet Academy provides accommodation for international students accepted into intermediate vocation education (full-time educational programs and traineeship programs) for the entire period of their studies, under conditions equal to the ones offered to others residing at the Dormitory. The Dormitory, located on the 3rd floor of the Academy building, is equipped with a TV, Wi-Fi, fridge, piano, furniture, cooking, and laundry facilities. Вed linens are provided as well. The Bolshoi Ballet Academy provides the students with urgent (emergency) medical aid at the walk-in medical clinic located on its premises within the framework of its term of reference, as per its legal status as established by the laws of the Russian Federation. Availability of a medical insurance policy is a mandatory condition for enrollment with the Academy. Transportation to and from the Academy upon arrival to Moscow / departure from the Academy is the students' responsibility or their parents/legal guardians.
