We are a large outstanding primary school in Newham. We care passionately about our children’s education and go the extra mile to help every child reach their full potential. This is reflected in our high SATs exam results. Our staff is highly committed to teaching stimulating and engaging lessons, concentrating on making sure that children acquire all basic skills, as well as stretching every child with our rich curriculum. We take groups of children every year to Rome or Amsterdam on art residential visits. Our children perform Shakespeare’s plays in local theatres. We train all our children in debating skills and have great success in regular regional competitions. We pride ourselves in our specialist sport and music provision. Our school environment is very smart with a large number of challenging climbing structures. We teach our children good manners and encourage them to contribute to society by taking part in charity fundraising. We provide a variety of after-school classes and clubs. We also have free one-to-one tutoring after school or on Saturday mornings for any child that needs it, to make sure that no child slips through the net. At Elmhurst, we believe that everyone should be treated equally and accepted openly. Staff and Governors work towards ensuring that all aspects of school life are "fair" and "safe" for children, staff, parents/carers, and the wider community. At Elmhurst, we have drawn upon the passion and expertise of our staff. Our wider curriculum is rich, diverse, and challenging. Each term or half term sees a new topic introduced within each year group. Our topics are designed to reflect the needs and interests of our pupils. At Elmhurst, we think it very important that our pupils develop a strong set of values and principles, and that they question and understand what it means to grow up in British society. Through a rich and challenging humanities curriculum, and through a focus on key events in British history - such as the creation of the Magna Carta which is celebrating its eight-hundredth anniversary this year - we invite pupils to reflect upon their role in a diverse, multicultural and multi-faith society. We inculcate a deeply embedded appreciation of the values of fairness and democracy through our humanities curriculum as well as through our use of a 'mandated' model of a school council, in which children seeking to be elected as class representatives participate in hustings and voting processes. Our geography curriculum casts light on global citizenship and the rule of law, including the role of democratic advocacy for change. Our school is enriched by the faith of our school community, and we teach an inclusive and all-embracing Religious Education curriculum that teaches pupils about the beliefs and practices of all major religious groups, and indeed the shared values that religion can promote in synchrony with core British values. As a school that serves a richly diverse community, we take our responsibility to promote community cohesion, generate respect for difference and individual rights seriously. Elmhurst is the oldest vocational dance school in the UK – its vision is to provide a world-renowned center of excellence for the training and education of classical ballet dancers for Birmingham Royal Ballet and other national and international dance companies. The new school has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of professional dance training, with all facilities on one five-acre campus. This move constituted a £20 million investment in the future of dance education in the UK and Elmhurst now fills what was a conspicuous void in vocational dance training in the Midlands. In October 2005, the school was officially opened. The Elmhurst Bistro is at the center of the school community. Diet is carefully monitored and the school has its catering staff who prepare all daily meals for the students of the school. All dietary needs are catered for and the school prides itself on the quality of the nutrition it provides. Talks by visiting nutritionists help to ensure that students are aware of the need to eat well-balanced meals. Academic tuition is delivered by an experienced staff of well-qualified, graduate teachers. This aspect of the school’s work is of central importance and students regularly achieve outstanding success in public examinations at GCSE and A-level. In 2015 73% received five or more GCSEs including English and Maths with a 100% pass rate at A-level. Form Tutors monitor the progress and welfare of each student, and pastoral care is provided through an extensive network of academic, residential, and vocational staff. Internal academic assessment takes place throughout the year, and parents receive regular written reports. As well as the annual parent-teacher evenings for each year group, parents are welcome to contact the school at any time over academic matters. A-level studies not only complement and enrich Elmhurst’s vocational training but, in the event of a career cut short by injury or a change of aspiration, they constitute a reliable insurance policy. If a student decides to go to university after his/her final year of training, every support is given by the Principal and her staff. At Elmhurst we are proud to have a truly dedicated teaching staff, all of whom come from a professional dance background and teach with passion and commitment. Our association with Birmingham Royal Ballet is of immense benefit to the school, further enhancing what we offer our pupils. We are fortunate to welcome Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers and staff to the school to teach daily classes, including pas de deux, regularly. Students are allowed to work in Birmingham Royal Ballet productions, in Birmingham and on tour around the UK and abroad, including dancing in the great classical ballets The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty. Elmhurst College traces its history back to 1871 when the German Evangelical Synod of the Northwest founded the Elmhurst Proseminary to prepare young men for theological seminary and train teachers parochial schools. Fourteen students enrolled that first year. They studied music, mathematics, science, history, geography, religion, German, and English—all disciplines that remain in the curriculum today—along with Latin and Greek. All courses, including English, were taught in German. In 1924, the school formally took on the name Elmhurst College and began conferring the bachelor of arts degree. The first leader of the new four-year CollegeCollege was a 1912 alumnus, H. Richard Niebuhr, who went on to become one of the premier theologians of the 20th century. Niebuhr, who envisioned Elmhurst as “an ever-widening circle,” undertook dramatic reforms. He built laboratories, hired a talented and progressive faculty, strengthened course offerings across the disciplines, and expanded library holdings. Over the years, the CollegeCollege has welcomed an extraordinary array of renowned speakers. In 1966, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to a standing-room-only crowd in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel. Other speakers have included Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, writer Joyce Carol Oates, social activist Jesse Jackson, and Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. View full university
