Afon Y Felin Primary School was opened in 1977 to serve the area which now included Marla's estate in North Cornelly. The school is just off Junction 37. The school has extensive grounds, including a rugby field, an environmental area, and an orchard at the rear of the school grounds. There is ample parking with established gardens and a large playing area.
We are a mainstream primary school and have a commitment to inclusive education and strive to maintain a high-quality teaching and learning environment for all children. There are currently 107 pupils on roll who are educated in 5 classes. Situated behind the school there is a Flying Start building which provides pre-school learning and cares for children 0-3 years.
Here at Afon Y Felin Primary, we are working hard to improve our school year by year, and we do this through the School Improvement Plan (SIP), a unique plan, refined annually, that defines a school’s targeted work to raise achievement for all of its students. These plans are the driving force behind the theory of change in our district’s strategic framework.
We would like to share with you our unique SIP, which has had input from staff, families, community members, and district administration. Each plan includes a set of key strategies aimed at measurable, research-based goals, monitored throughout the year, in the following five areas:
- To continue to raise standards in Science across the school.
- To continue to raise standards in Numeracy with a particular focus on enriching the teaching of numerical reasoning across the school.
- To improve pupils’ attitudes to learning through developing a growth mindset learning culture based on Habits of Mind. (HOB)
- To further develop the quality of teaching through Continua.
- To continue to improve standards in ICT across the school.
- Reducing the gap between poverty and attainment.
Information Communication and Technology (ICT) plays an important role in a child's journey through Afon y Felin Primary. Your child will experience a wealth of technology as they move upwards through the school. We have a range of digital tablets, including Kindle Fires and iPads, and we also have a state of the art all-in-one desktop PCs in our library and ICT suites.
