- Afon Y Felin Primary School was opened in 1977 to serve the area which now included Marla's estate in North Cornelly. The school is just off Junction 37. The school has extensive grounds, including a rugby field, an environmental area, and an orchard at the rear of the school grounds. There is ample parking with established gardens and a large playing area. We are a mainstream primary school and have a commitment to inclusive education and strive to maintain a high-quality teaching and learning environment for all children. There are currently 107 pupils on roll who are educated in 5 classes. Situated behind the school there is a Flying Start building which provides pre-school learning and cares for children 0-3 years. Here at Afon Y Felin Primary, we are working hard to improve our school year by year, and we do this through the School Improvement Plan (SIP), a unique plan, refined annually, that defines a school’s targeted work to raise achievement for all of its students. These plans are the driving force behind the theory of change in our district’s strategic framework. We would like to share with you our unique SIP, which has had input from staff, families, community members, and district administration. Each plan includes a set of key strategies aimed at measurable, research-based goals, monitored throughout the year, in the following five areas: To continue to raise standards in Science across the school. To continue to raise standards in Numeracy with a particular focus on enriching the teaching of numerical reasoning across the school. To improve pupils’ attitudes to learning through developing a growth mindset learning culture based on Habits of Mind. (HOB) To further develop the quality of teaching through Continua. To continue to improve standards in ICT across the school. Reducing the gap between poverty and attainment. Information Communication and Technology (ICT) plays an important role in a child's journey through Afon y Felin Primary. Your child will experience a wealth of technology as they move upwards through the school. - Ysgol Porth Y Felin is a Voluntary controlled School of the Church in Wales and was established in September 1998 following the amalgamation of Ysgol Cadnant, Ysgol Bodlondeb, and Ysgol Gyffin. The School is named after the impressive Mill gate entrance to the Walled town of Conwy. We educate over 300 pupils in a friendly, supportive and caring environment. All staff works tirelessly to ensure that our pupils attain the highest possible standards. We are very proud of our school and work constantly to provide exciting and stimulating experiences that raise standards for the benefit of all our pupils. We are also very proud of our extra-curricular provision. We offer a wide range of activities including a Urdd club and also compete in several sporting activities including football, netball, tennis, athletics, cross-country running, and swimming as well as participating in the Urdd eisteddfod. Our residential visits for our junior pupils offer unforgettable experiences that live long in the memory. We also provide several enrichment activities after school hours such as the Gardening club and cookery club. Pupil voice and their contribution to School life are extremely important to us. One of the many contributions made by the pupil council was selecting our school motto –Belief, Respect, Succeed. Recognizing its historic foundation, the school will preserve and develop its religious character by the principles of the Church in Wales and partnership with the Church at parish and diocesan levels. The school aims to serve the community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and promotes Christian values through the experience it offers to all its pupils. All external doors have security locks. Sensor lighting is located around parts of the main building. The school is fully alarmed against internal trespass, with the added security measure of a fire alarm. Evacuation procedures are undertaken on a termly basis. All visitors are expected to report to the school office before being allowed admission into the school building. One of our aims is to ensure that every child enjoys their time at school and we strive to provide a safe, stimulating, and exciting environment. Car Felin is a happy school. The teachers and support staff are all hardworking and conscientious and have a wonderful relationship with the pupils. We pride ourselves on the broad, balanced, and full curriculum we offer, the highest standards of teaching and learning, and the effective working relationship with parents and the community. Welsh is an integral component of our school. It’s the language of lessons, the language of the school community as a whole and we also focus on our rich culture as part of our school curriculum. We value our pupils and believe that their time in school should be rewarding and fulfilling. Car Felin is a Welsh-medium primary school. The school caters to pupils of the age range 3-11 years. The school is located in the heart of the village of Pencader. Pupils from Pencader village and New Inn, Gwyddgrug, Alltwalis, and Llanfihangel ar Arth areas attend the school. The school is housed in a single-story building, split into four classrooms, a multi-purpose hall used for collective worship, concerts, and PE lessons, and a canteen. The school has a very comprehensive outside area which consists of a yard and a field. General Aims of the School: To stimulate the children’s emotional and social development to enable them to realize their full potential. To help pupils develop lively, enquiring minds, the ability to question and argue rationally and to apply themselves to tasks. To develop an awareness and appreciation of the child’s locality, language, culture, traditions, and physical development. The development of personal moral values and respect for religious values. The development of language in all forms, so that it becomes a purposeful and meaningful means of communication. This will include listening, speaking, reading writing, and literary appreciation. To acquire understanding, knowledge, and skills relevant to adult life: mathematical, scientific, and technological.
