Charis International School (CIS) started on Aug 24, 2014, as the first international school for Tawau and the third for the East Malaysian State of Sabah. The school is located in Tawau’s new landmark, Calvary Crown a ten-story multi-purpose building that is situated very strategically in the heart of the town. CIS, a K-11 school, is a registered Cambridge International Primary and Secondary School, providing the Cambridge Primary, Lower Secondary, and the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education).

Charis International Kindergarten (CIK) follows closely after the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) of the UK and prepares the children well for Cambridge Primary. The curriculum is a well-rounded one, providing avenues for the children to develop in all areas of their lives. The teaching methods encourage students to develop confidence as well as critical thinking skills. Besides the core subjects, children also learn practical life skills, independence, persistence, creativity, patience, cooperation, and a caring attitude towards others.CIK is attractively decorated and equipped to provide a conducive environment for children to learn through hands-on experiences.

The school has received encouraging responses from the local community. Outstation and international students can enroll as “Charis Home” is available to offer “A Home Away From Home”. The team of dedicated, qualified, and experienced local and expatriate teachers from the UK, America, South Africa, India, Australia, and the Philippines adds an international flavor to the school environment and enriches the experiences provided.

International school education is the preferred education to give children a better head start for a globalized world that is rapidly changing due to advances in digital technology as well as a need to enhance English language skills for effective communication globally. CIS is well prepared to take our children towards this challenge with our 21st-century classrooms where smart TVs, Apple TVs, iPads, and computers are part of the learning tools in class and communication between students, teachers, and parents.

CIS actively engages students in activities outside of the classroom to give students a better worldview of life and society. Twelve students went on an educational tour to the UK from October 7-22, 2015. They joined an elite school in London for a week to have a taste of British education. The second group of twelve was similarly taken to UK October 11-27, 2017. Charis students also participate in Rotary International sponsored Young Leaders Award (RYLA) training a few times annually as well as in community projects, planning, and carrying out special programs at Grace Alternative Training Centre for stateless children in Tawau.

Charis International School is a vision realized to upgrade educational facilities in Tawau and enable parents in Tawau to give their children an internationally recognized education and to have them more proficient in the English language, digitally savvy, and better prepared for their post-secondary and tertiary studies in colleges and universities worldwide.

We welcome students to come together to become global citizens of the future. We nurture a ‘Charis Family’ spirit of belonging, understanding, and caring for each other. We embrace the diversity of our school community and challenge the minds of our students through practical & experiential learning doing the Cambridge Primary, Lower Secondary, and IGCSE levels. Our team of dedicated, qualified, and experienced international and local teachers facilitate learning and understanding by students, not just to pass exams but to apply and communicate it to become independent and life-long learners who can think critically and creatively.

ICT is an integral part of the teaching and learning process in our electronically equipped classrooms and laboratories. Our small classes provide for more individualized attention and differentiated learning. Our scope of co-curricular activities make school life more enjoyable and rewarding as well as provide avenues for students to develop their interactive and social skills to be outgoing, active and responsible individuals who can contribute to the community.

We treat every child as a uniquely gifted and talented individual. We will seek to identify and nurture these gifts and talents through careful mentoring in an environment of acceptance, trust, and respect for individual differences. Our core aspiration is for all students to develop to their fullest and to push the boundaries of learning. Our mission is to:

    • Provide holistic nurture to serve the unique intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs of our students, who are in a critical period of their lives as they grow from childhood to adolescence.
    • Guide and encourage our students' development of personal standards of self-discipline, self-reliance, self-motivation, initiative, commitment, and accountability.
    • Instill on our students good moral and ethical values and compassion for humanity to understand, respect, serve and care for others in a multiracial and multicultural setting.

Develop, in our students, the skills of leadership, teamwork, and shared responsibilities for harmonious living in a borderless world.
