British-based education offers its students a strong academic grounding but also provides a broad extra-curricular program. The aim is to develop abilities and personalities to enable the graduates of the school to be able to enter and compete in the best universities in the world and, for half a century, this is what the school has achieved.
What makes this school special is that its alumni, whatever their abilities, have a special ‘stamp’ that distinguishes them and is recognizable many years later, both in the workplace and in life in general. This stamp is achieved through academic excellence, extra-curricular opportunity, and involvement, as well as the distinctive family atmosphere that has been maintained in the school from the very beginning.
The New English School, (N.E.S.) was founded by the late chairman, Mr. Tareq S. Rajab, and was the first private, coeducational day school in Kuwait to offer a British-style curriculum from Kindergarten to A level. The chairman comes from a family with a history of pioneering in education and he established the school at a time of change in Kuwait in which he foresaw the need for education with English as the medium of teaching.
The first classes of NES opened in a villa in Shamiyah, actually starting at the Secondary level and very soon after extending backward to Kindergarten. It was soon apparent that this educational venture was outgrowing the original premises, so a purpose-built campus was opened in 1974, and to date, improvements and extensions continue to maintain an environment that allows students to thrive.
The school serves both the local and international communities, with children from over 70 nationalities and close ties are maintained with the U.K. and with other overseas British and International schools.
The New English School has an enviable academic record and is outstanding in the region. The school achieves its mission through a combination of academic and extra-curricular activities. Thus, along with a broad range of academic subjects, the extra-curricular activities program spans diverse areas – drama, music, sports, the arts, crafts, technology as well as formalized programs such as the Model United Nations (M.U.N.), the International Debating Club and the Duke of Edinburgh Award (International Award), the first school in Kuwait to offer this.
