Situated in historic Unionville, Ontario, Unionville Montessori Private School (UMS) is widely recognized as a distinguished educational setting. UMS is a co-educational, non-denominational private school officially registered with the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training. Established in 1987, the school has a proud tradition of quality instruction, measurable educational excellence, and noteworthy student achievement.
UMS’s hallmark is a clear focus on high expectations blending academic success with the character development of the individual child. For the past ten (10) years, UMS students have exceeded the Canadian achievement norms in every grade and every subject as measured by the Canadian Achievement Test (CAT-4). Local, Provincial, and National student achievements in mathematics are also commendable. The student success rate attests to the quality instruction and support they receive on an ongoing basis. The children are offered a diversified, challenging, and enriched elementary academic curriculum. At UMS, we teach children how to learn rather than merely what to learn. This approach reinforces creative thinking, problem-solving, team-building, and self-confidence. These four elements guide educational programs at every level.
Classroom lessons encourage students to explore, discover, challenge, and debate as they engage in dialogues with their peers and their teachers. UMS students develop the skills they need to succeed in school and life through activities that promote academic excellence, self-reliance, good sportsmanship, aesthetic appreciation, and critical thinking. The educational program generally exceeds the Ontario Curriculum learning expectations in both depth and breadth. At UMS, curriculum research and development also remain a priority. Refinements to enhance exemplary programming, effective teaching, and student achievement are important, and efforts to move forward on all three fronts are part of our blueprint for the future.
Since the school’s inception, our objective has remained consistent: to create a learning experience and environment that is uniquely engaging, challenging, relevant, and tailored to the learning needs of every student. Unionville Montessori Private School students gain a well-rounded, dynamic education that promotes a strong academic and social foundation. Preparing students for success when they enter secondary school settings is a common goal. Our parallel goal is to prepare students to become lifelong learners, committed citizens, and individuals of laudable character.
To promote academic excellence within an enriched curriculum by providing positive educational opportunities for children which foster leadership, achievement, and a love of learning. Recognizing that facts and figures change, we also focus on teaching children how to learn rather than merely what to learn. This approach reinforces creative thinking, problem-solving, team building, and self-confidence. These four elements are critical to the development of future success. They guide our Casa and Elementary educational programs.
Unionville Montessori School (UMS) is dedicated to providing an exceptional learning experience. Students are active participants in their education. Classroom lessons encourage students who get admission to explore, discover, challenge, and debate as they engage in dialogues with their peers and their teachers.
UMS strives to provide a well-rounded approach to education. Students develop the skills they need to succeed in school and life through activities that promote academic excellence, self-reliance, good sportsmanship, aesthetic appreciation, and critical thinking. We help our students to become self-motivated and self-disciplined scholars as well as responsible citizens in their community, their country, and their world. At UMS, learning is a total life experience.
The Montessori philosophy and method of teaching foster a loving, independent environment tailored to the individual needs and development of each student. The Montessori approach is a student-centered and student-directed teaching method that is offered within a prepared environment, which fosters exploration, experimentation, creativity, and respect. Our Pre- and Jr. Casa Montessori program builds on the foundation of the Montessori Method with extremely popular enhancements and additional learning opportunities for our students in music, science, visual and dramatic arts, and more.
We are very proud of the strong reputation of our pre-school program which has, for many years, provided children with a strong foundation in academic and life skills all within family-like and supportive classroom environments. Our Casa program builds on the foundation of the Montessori Method with extremely popular enhancements and additional learning opportunities for our students in music, science, visual and dramatic arts, and more. Our structured, traditional Montessori approach helps students at an early age to develop solid foundations in language and mathematics compared to a play-based kindergarten class. Casa students benefit from exposure to world-renowned teaching methods by our highly-trained Montessori teachers. In a rotary, our teachers are specialized in their respective fields, giving them the ability to deliver our programs effectively. For instance, in French, teachers make use of the AIMS gesture program and in music, teachers use the Orff Approach.
Classes have been enriched with instruction on iPads and Smart Board technology enabling our children to learn with 21st-century resources. Parents receive regular updates on their children’s development through individualized tracking sheets developed by our teachers. UMS takes great pride in continuously improving and taking advantage of the newest approaches to education. We are one of the very few schools that have a full-time research and development department that allows us to follow education innovations around the world.
Our Elementary program implements the Ontario Curriculum at an advanced level with low student/teacher ratios, small class sizes, and highly-trained educators. The advanced curriculum means that students are learning a grade ahead in the subject areas of language, math, science, and social studies. In addition, UMS offers enrichment through both our educational curriculum and our physical facilities. UMS students enjoy guest lecturers and stimulating field trips, and our teachers regularly plan individual and group-based activities that allow students to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom to the real world.
