  1. Belmont Hill School educates boys in mind, body, and spirit to develop men of good character. Our community encourages and challenges students to discover and pursue passions, seek excellence, and face adversity with resilience. We cultivate critical thinking and creativity, teamwork and competition, hard work and reflection, tradition and innovation. Valuing our differences and working together, we embrace camaraderie, compassion, and service to others. Our school strives to instill in each boy ethical judgment, a sense of common humanity, and a lifelong love of learning. Belmont Hill is blessed with a remarkable campus and exceptional programs to catalyze transformational experiences for our boys. However, it is the people and the relationships formed here that forge the true magic of a Belmont Hill education. We adhere to an unwavering belief in the power of a teacher/coach model where boys are taught and coached by committed faculty who come to know them in multiple learning areas. Boys are challenged, known, and celebrated here. We cherish traditions like family-style lunches and milk and cookies, and yet we offer rigorous and innovative academic experiences like our Advanced Science Research program. While we are proud to work with academically gifted boys from all backgrounds, we are even more proud of the work ethic and values they develop during their Belmont Hill experience. Outside of the classroom, Belmont Hill seeks the same level of excellence. The School enjoys a rich athletic tradition and is inspired by the creativity and individual expression fostered by our arts programs. We currently serve 80 communities as a day school that is augmented by a five-day residential program for approximately 30 boys. We are committed to inclusion and openness, grounded by a belief that empathy and dialogue are essential foundations to learning. All of these beliefs flow from our fundamental commitment to character development as our central purpose. All that we do here ties back to this aim of not merely creating good scholars, good athletes, or good artists: We seek to develop good men. Belmont Hill School’s commitment to diversity is empowered by the synergy of our community. The collective identities and perspectives of our students, faculty, and staff create a unifying force that celebrates, educates, and enriches each member of the Belmont Hill family. We do not define diversity with statistics of students, nor do we attempt to categorize our constituencies to affirm an impression of requirement. Diversity lives within our community it demonstrates the mantra of “working together” that anchors our Mission Statement and invigorates the spirit that makes Belmont Hill an exceptional place for the mind to grow. The bond between community and diversity begins by encouraging the students to realize who they are as individuals. We want each member of our community to understand that the development of a strong sense of self is imperative for the genuine recognition of the cultures, ideas, and conditions that make everyone unique. This process generates a pluralistic dialogue that enables students to become more aware of how each individual is essential to the social and cognitive diversity that enhances the Belmont Hill community.

Participation in extramural activities. Fostering of religious principles. Interacting with and serving our community. To transform learners into proud & responsible citizens. The school has a well-functioning computer Laboratory. We offer basic computer classes to Grade R – 9. Learners are offered computer Literacy for exposure to Information Technology Environment. Computer Literacy will not be formally accessed and therefore will not appear in learners’ reports. Often educational tours use multimedia to visually grab attention and encourage students to partake in an enjoyable learning experience. However, in the classroom, these exposed sensors may be limited. Students are more likely to enjoy and learn from a history class located in the center of where it all began, than in the classroom. If you’re a teacher that struggles to grab your student’s attention from time to time, school tours and field trips are sure to spark excitement to learn. Reinforcing the course material and allowing the lesson to come to life, allows them to visualize, experience, and discuss the information, allowing students to recall the experience long after the trip. Taking the students out of the classroom and into a new environment allows them to work as a team with other classmates outside of their normal group. Not only that, but they make lifelong memories among peers, which is no doubt a fun learning experience in itself View full school

  4. The absence of an English Primary School in the North inspired the major task of canvassing for, and eventually the building of, Northridge Primary School in 1974. Thanks to the efforts of an extremely hardworking, dedicated group of Sinoville parents under the leadership of Mrs. Anne Bouwer the school opened, officially, on 11 May 1976. The school opened to an enrolment of some 229 learners from Grade 1 to Grade 4. Today the school boasts a complement of 1204 learners with classes including Grades R to Grade 7. Northridge Primary School uses the School Communicator as our primary means of communication with parents. The School Calendar, various resources (Newsletters, etc), as well as selected homework, are posted on the Communicator. Please download it today, so that you can stay up to date with school events. In the Foundation Phase discipline is the responsibility of the class teacher and, on occasion, other teachers with whom the learner comes in contact. Most discipline takes the form of a warning or reprimand but on occasion, a learner needs to receive a firmer consequence and in these cases, a black dot will be issued. Should a learner accumulate 5 black dots he/she will be required to attend a detention on a Friday afternoon. A detention letter will be sent home advising parents of this action. A reward system is also in place to encourage and reinforce positive, desired behavior. Rewards come in the form of stickers on the chart. Once a learner receives 5 stickers in Grades 1-2 he/she will be allowed to wear civvies on a Friday. Grade 3 learners must accumulate 10 stickers to be able to wear civvies on a Friday. Parents will be advised on which day the learner may wear civvies. In the INTERSEC PHASE discipline is encouraged and reinforced through the use of a merit and demerit system. Positive behavior and good work are rewarded by the awarding of merits. As learners accumulate merits they are further rewarded with certificates, civvies, tuckshop vouchers, trips to the cinema, and the top merit earners are taken on an outing at the end of the year. Undesirable behavior is discouraged by the issuing of demerits. This is usually only done after a learner has been warned. Once a learner has received 5 demerits he/she will be required to attend a detention on a Friday from 1:35 to 3:30 p.m. Should a learner continue to receive detentions it will be taken that he/she is non-compliant with our discipline structure and parents will be required to attend a meeting with the principal and the learner’s educators. Further failure to comply will result in the learner and his /her parents attending a meeting with the SGB. Learners who continually flaunt the rules will be excluded from excursions and camps as a child who cannot behave in the classroom could prove to be a risk and an embarrassment when out of the confines of the school environment. Northridge Primary has an Aftercare Centre which caters to learners who cannot go home directly after school. In the Aftercare Centre learners are provided with a nutritious lunch and their homework is supervised daily from Monday to Thursday. The Aftercare Centre is open until 17:30 (5:30 pm) by which time all learners should have been collected unless special arrangements were made with the manager of the Aftercare Centre. The Aftercare Centre does not operate in school holidays nor on public holidays. Fees are determined each year and are payable in advance at the beginning of each month. At Northridge Primary School we offer a wide variety of extra-mural activities. We cater to the sporty child as well as the cultural child. The cultural activities are done throughout the year: Drum Majorettes, Eco Club, Chef Club, Marimba Band, Bible club, Comfort Zone, Brotherhood, Inside-out Club, Science Club. An extra-mural timetable goes out at the beginning of each term which indicates on what day and at what time the extramural activity starts and ends. View full school

  8. Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School was originally housed in a Victorian-style family mansion, Morningside, which was the home of Peter and Mary Davis. Education for women during this period was not common and the founders of the school were uncertain of its viability. However, as the number of girls continued to grow, a bigger and better school building was needed. Designed in the style of Sir Herbert Baker, the new school building was opened in 1925 and remains the heart of the school despite the many additions that have taken place over the years. The original red-brick building, which faces Alexandra Road, has been declared a National Monument. Today, GHS is a leading high school providing education to over 1 100 girls. The day scholar complement makes up the larger section of the school community and boarding facilities are available. Academic pursuits receive priority at GHS. We maintain outstanding achievements in the NSC examinations annually with a Bachelor Pass rate of over 95% and a number of our learners continually featured in the NSC top achievers list. Our high academic standards ensure the success of our girls in tertiary education and their chosen careers. At GHS, the high caliber of teaching staff ensures the best educational opportunities for our learners. We believe that the four Cs Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity, are the most important skills of 21st-century teaching and our digitally advanced facilities enable our learners to explore and master these skills. The study of Drama can help develop many qualities and life skills: enthusiasm, confidence, self-esteem, conversational competence, and social skills. Furthermore, drama lessons stimulate learners to be motivated and involved. Visual Arts is an enormously rewarding and enjoyable subject that develops learners’ ability to manage their time and to manage processes from the start through to the final product. To do Music in Grade 10, learners should have demonstrated consistent work and progress in Grades 8 and 9, in both the theoretical and practical components of Music. Learners have to practice their instruments daily. Trained educators have been appointed in each of the subjects with specialist musicians in the Music Department. While these subjects are offered in the school curriculum, aspects of them can be pursued on a more social level: learners can join the Drama, Dance or Art Societies, and the musical learners can be members of the School Choir, Chamber Choir, Gospel Choir or the Wind Band. After a rigorous selection process by the Department of Sport and Recreation, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School has been nominated as a Sport Focus School, namely in the disciplines of Hockey, Basketball, and Netball. This initiative aims to partner with selected schools to provide top school-going sportsmen and women with a strong foundation to one day compete at the National level and ultimately at the 2022 Durban Commonwealth Games. Eight KwaZulu-Natal schools were awarded this prestigious title, with GHS as the only all-girls school selected. View full school

  12. Northwood is consistently recognized as one of the top public boys’ schools in KwaZulu-Natal based on the matric results, a testament to academics remaining the primary focus of the school. The rich and varied academic program offers a general formative education while at the same time emphasizing the personal development of every learner in small classes. All classrooms are equipped with either smart boards or data projectors, as well as being extensively covered by the school’s protected wifi network. There are several specialist classrooms including dedicated science labs, music rooms, art rooms, and multi-purpose audio-visual rooms. In Grades eight and nine, the average number in each class is twenty-seven in the accelerated classes and twenty-five in the mixed-ability classes. In Grades ten to twelve, class size ranges between twenty and twenty-eight, depending on the subject and the subject sets. The school gym came about as a result of Northwood’s involvement with the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. Northwood was the training venue for Greece, which, sadly, made an early exit from the competition. Academics at Northwood is systematic and individualized, yet dynamic in its approach with a blended learning focus. This allows learners to use Tablet devices within the classroom and make use of the many educational applications available to us. As a school, Information Technology integration is key, and we have therefore made extensive use of the D6 School Communicator not only as a notice board but as a tool for both learners and parents, supplying homework daily as well as extension work and past papers. Google classroom is extensively used within the school and gives learners access to fantastic online content and worksheets that can be supplemented by spot tests and quizzes. Google classroom also provides learners with the ability to ask peers and their teachers, questions regarding homework or tests, without having to be at school. An in-depth Programme of Assessment (POA) is published each term stipulating the dates of all formal tasks and tests that are to be written that term. A unique system of setting individualized target marks for each learner in each subject allows us the opportunity for positive reinforcement at Northwood. If this target mark is reached in each Control Test, the learner has the privilege of leaving school at 1:30 p.m. on a Friday as opposed to having to attend a “reinforcement lesson” for an extra hour on a Friday. The extensive use of SMS messages allows parents to be able to remain close to their son’s academics, with messages sent to all learners achieving 80% or above for congratulations, as well as messages regarding learners that have not reached their target mark or for those that have failed to hand in an assessment. Northwood traces its origins back to the founding of the co-educational Durban North High School on the site of the present Northlands Girls’ High in September 1949. It started with 12 staff members and 215 pupils under Headmaster, Mr. George J. Armstrong. By 1951, numbers had grown so rapidly that it was decided to build a second high school in Durban North, and split the existing school into a boys’ school and a girls’ school. On 30 September 1953, the boys marched out of the gates of the old campus to the present Northwood campus in Kensington Drive. Northlands Boys’ High School opened with 338 boys and 17 staff members, under Mr. Percy Hardaker (1953 – 1962) and thereafter Mr. Mc Farquar (1963 – 1774) It made rapid progress in both academics and sport, and numbers continued to grow, requiring the building of yet another boys’ school in the area. Situated in the leafy suburb of Durban North, Northwood’s large campus boasts sweeping views of the Indian Ocean from many of its state-of-the-art classrooms and computer, science, and technology laboratories. The school also takes pride in its world-class sporting facilities which include a flood-lit Hockey Astroturf, indoor cricket academy, heated aquatic facility, fully-equipped gymnasium, Sports Medicine Centre, as well as extensive rugby, cricket, and soccer fields and tennis and basketball courts. 13. 14. Here we briefly outline the history and heritage of Port Rex. Port Rex Technical High School has its roots in the Technical section of the East London Technical College (1928-1968). In 1974, on a suggestion by the then headmaster, Dr. Johan Brittz, the East London Technical High School changed its name to Port Rex Technical High School. The name ‘Port Rex’ has its origin in George Rex, a British sea captain who landed at the mouth of the Buffalo River in 1823. Up until 1847, East London was named Port Rex. Former headmaster Dr. Johan Brittz was also instrumental in the design of the current Port Rex school badge. The school colors, Cambridge University blue, and maroon have an interesting history. Mr. Lorton, early Head of Technology at the East London Technical College, studied at the Imperial College in London, where maroon was worn. Similarly, Mr. Shannon, early Head of Commerce at the East London Technical College, studied at Cambridge University, hence the color blue. Our aim at Port Rex Technical High School is to expose our learners, within the protected background at the high school level, to an Academic environment that will facilitate the opportunity to acquire practical skills and useful knowledge. Learners are then equipped and ready with skills and knowledge to take into post grade 12 study or the world of work to enable a meaningful contribution to the South African commercial sector. Deeply rooted in the Port Rex philosophy is the concept that our educational package should seek relevance with Industry. It is this belief that governs our Employment and Social Responsibility Programme. Over the last 30 years, we have developed a beneficial relationship with a cross-section of local and national businesses in the Technological and Manufacturing Sector, who actively seek out and welcome applications from our learners. The four houses: Christopher, Bisseker, Cowie, and Bowie were named after four Board Councillors who served the East London Technical College and contributed much to Technical Education in the border region. Our motto, ‘Mente-et-Manu’ – meaning ‘With mind and hand’, has its origin in the old East London Technical College. All learners follow the D.B.E. curriculum as prescribed in the CAPS document. The only exception is that at Port Rex, more emphasis is placed on Technology. Here, grade 8 and 9 learners receive “hands-on” experience with the tools and equipment which they will encounter in other senior technical subjects. At this early phase, our learners are already exposed to Engineering Graphics and Design as well as workshop practice. This allows the learners to make an informed decision when selecting their specialized technical subject at the end of Grade 9. All grade 10, 11, and 12 Port Rex learners take a selection of compulsory subjects, with the additional option of one of 3 available specialized technology subjects. The selection of the technology subject is made at the end of Grade 9 based on the learner’s achievement in Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology. The Technology subjects each have limits imposed on numbers by factors such as safety and the number of work stations available. Mathematics and Physical Sciences are taken together and Technical Mathematics and Technical Sciences are taken together. The study of Mechanical Technology builds on the systems, controls, structures, and processes found in the Technology Learning Area Statement for the General Education and Training band. It serves to further develop the learners’ knowledge and understanding of levers, pulleys, gears, and mechanisms. Learners are also exposed to the use and application of mechanical advantage, designs, and structures as applied in design to promote safety and efficiency. Mechanical Technology is designed to promote learners with a sound base that integrates technical and practical competencies. Civil Technology and related professions such as architecture, building, and quantity surveying, collectively known as the Built Environment, are the basis on which civilization was founded. It is through these professions that essential services, such as roads, bridges, purified water, water-borne sewerage, railway lines, high-rise buildings, factories, and housing in general, among its many aspects, are provided. Electrical Technology focuses on the understanding and application of electronic principles and the technological processes inherent in the production of products, services, and systems. Electrical Technology provides a sound foundation for further studies in the Electrical Engineering and Electronic field. 18. At the Plettenberg Bay Christian School, we encourage character and individualized learning as a Divine Mandate. Diagnostic testing assures that every student finds that place that maximizes learning. Our vision is to become a College of Christian Education from pre-school to post-school developing Godly character in tomorrow’s leaders. Developing responsible life-long learners of Character to positively impact their communities with a Biblical World-View. We believe now more than ever that the individualized learning methodology of ACE (which has stood the test of time) is indeed an effective tool in equipping students to fulfill their calling. Our students have once again received great reports from both University and the professional domain and we are delighted at their success. True Christian education is not a negative thing it is not a matter of isolating the student from the full scope of knowledge. Isolating the student from large sections of human knowledge is not the basis of Christian education. Rather it is giving him or her the framework for total truth, rooted in the Creator’s existence and the Bible’s teaching so that in each step of the formal learning process the student will understand what is true and what is false and why it is true or false. It is not isolating students from human knowledge. It is giving the tools in the opening the doors to all human knowledge, in the Christian framework so they will know what is truth and what is untruth, so they can keep learning as long as they live, and they can enjoy, they can enjoy, the whole wrestling through the field after field of knowledge. At A.C.E., our purpose in providing educational materials goes beyond simply helping students learn the academics required to enter college or get a good job. We desire to build in students a lifelong burning passion to learn and grow spiritually. It is one thing to want children to be successful and quite another to provide the academic and character training to ensure this accomplishment. Godly character training is part of the A.C.E. learning experience, and it prepares students to welcome and accept challenges and future opportunities. Sixty character traits, such as kindness, loyalty, and honesty, are taught within the curriculum. Students can observe character development in the true-to-life character strips and then apply the Godly character lessons to their own lives. Challenging and highly effective, the A.C.E. program is an extraordinary educational approach, Biblical in its core, that prepares students for tomorrow’s world while giving them traditional moral values that will last a lifetime. The curriculum conveys Biblical values and concepts considered foundational to meaningful interpersonal relationships and productive learning in such a way as to become life-shaping influences. We were formally aligned to the Mamelodi Sundowns, but as of 2018, our players are exclusive to our academy. However, we do allow sponsorships for soccer learners. We advise that this sponsorship accommodates REC’s holistic approach to soccer. We are of the view that our soccer students need to receive a formal education as professional soccer careers have an expiry date, based on age. We do not want our alumni to have any fallback education. View full school

  24. In January 1926 the P.E. Secondary School was opened in the old hospital buildings on Richmond Hill, with an enrolment of 35 pupils, both girls, and boys. The founder's principal was Mr. Leo Deary. The school moved in July 1927, to the Grey Institute buildings on the Donkin. In January 1928 the school was named Pearson High School after the Hon. William Pearson, who served as mayor of Port Elizabeth for 16 years. Afrikaans was recognized as a medium of instruction in South African schools until standard six, but in 1928 fifteen Port Elizabeth pupils wished to continue their schooling further through the medium of Afrikaans. Pearson was the only school in Port Elizabeth able to manage this. In 1938, under the headmastership of Mr. H. Bezemer (1938 – 1947), the first Afrikaans-medium class passed the Senior Certificate examination. At this stage, our enrolment figure stood at 575 and Pearson was the only parallel-medium high school in the Eastern Cape and Border area with classes offered in both languages in all standards. Pearson had become the high school with the highest enrolment in the province. As extra accommodation was needed, a new school was built in Bayview Avenue (now Erica Girls’ School). The school moved to this site in 1941. In 2019 Pearson introduced a new environmental club with a focus on our oceans. A group of knowledgeable and enthusiastic learners quickly created awareness about the impact that the irresponsible use of plastics has on the oceans. A small group started doing beach clean-ups, selling glass straws and reusable cups. The group steadily grew and the club joined The Sustainable Seas Trust as well as WESSA for bigger beach clean-ups and other events, which turned out to be a lot of fun as well. The president, Sophia Finestone, was selected as the first youth ambassador for the African Waste Network. Sophia attended the 10-day Global Youth Leadership Conference in Washington DC in June 2019 where she had a platform to share her views regarding the responsible use of plastic with other young leaders from 145 countries as well as international agencies including the UN. Pearson is extremely proud of her. 2020 is sure to be a remarkable year with a growing group of learners who are excited about saving the planet’s oceans.n addition to providing you with information that we hope will be of use to you, this site also chronicles the many activities of the school, the staff, and its learners. Continuous assessment is done according to the CAPS guidelines for every subject or learning area. For work not handed in, a letter is sent to the parents. It is signed by the Grade Head. The letter is to inform parents that the learner is not making the required progress in a subject or is not handing in projects or assignments. Parents have to acknowledge receipt of the letter.
