Johannesburg Polytech Institute (JPI) traces its origins to the arrival of South African democracy in 1994. Although we started teaching 60 pupils by then the school is now over 2000 students, (Primary & High School) including Grade R. In its 18 years of existence, Johannesburg until today JPI has grown to be one of the reputable schools in the inner city of Johannesburg, Doornforntein. For grades 8&9, we offer computer lessons in our new IT Labs, which accommodates 42 learners per period. There is no extra cost involved in this. We aim to ensure that our learners are computer literate. The school is currently installing a state-of-the-art internet and telephone system through NEOTEL and will be a fully-fledged wi-fi zone via this system. The academic ethos at the College is as competitive as the one enjoyed in sport and cultural arenas. The College has an outstanding record of academic achievement in the IEB Matriculation Examinations. There has been a 100% pass rate for over a decade, with over 80% of boys receiving an A, B, or C aggregate and a quarter receiving A aggregates. Our small class sizes, highly qualified staff, and the emphasis on the use of state-of-the-art technology in the classrooms and laboratories are reflected in our boys’ excellent results. The school embraces the benefits of technology in enhancing learning, with the campus being covered by a wireless LAN, allowing boys access to the highly developed Kearsney intranet and the internet, and extensive use being made of SMART Boards and other ICT resources. All Grade 8 boys undergo a Readiness Test in the first week of Grade 8. The results from this test are analyzed and English literacy support lessons are offered weekly, within the timetable, by our Academic Support Specialist, to boys in Grade 8 and 9 who have been identified as having a low reading age, or who have been flagged by the English department as needing development in literacy, vocabulary or comprehension skills. Should a boy start to show signs of battling with the rigors of his high school studies such as not completing tasks or tests on time not keeping up with the content covered in class or battling to retain information when studying, it is suggested that his parents make an appointment with the College’s Academic Support Specialist. She may recommend that a boy undergoes an educational psychologist’s assessment to determine whether he has an underlying barrier to learning. A list of IEB-approved educational psychologists will be provided to the parents to set up this assessment. Once the report from the educational psychologist has been received an application will be made by the Academic Support Specialist, on behalf of the parents, to the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) for the granting of an examination accommodation for the boy. Should the accommodations be granted by the IEB they are then put in place. Every boy’s academic support requirements are unique. In addition, some boys are busier in the afternoons than others. We believe that customizing an individual academic support program, at no extra cost, for each boy within the context of a varied, cumulative, and structured assessment program, will ensure that he achieves academic results at the end of his Grade 12 year that is in keeping with his true academic potential. Kearsney provides a dynamic environment to promote sporting excellence, sportsmanship, and healthy competition for all. The SportZone at Kearsney has been developed to provide outstanding facilities to complement our well-established High-Performance program. The SportZone includes a 280sq meter weights gym where individualized conditioning programs are provided for our sportsmen. The indoor center provides seven cricket nets with full run-ups and four bowling machines, indoor hockey and soccer, and two basketball courts. The school was opened in 1955 in the old Clapham High buildings on the corner of Du Toit and Dr. Savage Streets. The name of the School was suggested by a member of staff, Miss L.L. Roe, and was formally adopted on the 1st of February 1955, at a meeting of over two hundred parents. At the same time the school motto - Levabo Oculos which means "I will lift my eyes" - suggested by Mr. E. van Niekerk, was accepted the school colors, anthem, and uniform were decided upon and parents association was formed. Miss N. Myburgh acted as principal from 1 March 1993 and was officially appointed as principal on 1 July 1993. Miss Myburgh retired in March 2004. Mr. J.G. Hepburn was acting principal from April 2004 until December 2004. Mr. Hepburn was appointed Principal in January 2005. The school is splendidly equipped. Lenasia Secondary School or Lenz High as it is more commonly known to the community has been instrumental in the education of the Lenasia community. Lenz High is the first school that was built in Lenasia by the then apartheid government to cater to the educational needs of the Indian community. Mandisa Shiceka High School was established in 1995 under the auspices of the Kagiso Education Crises Committee and some educators who were volunteering their services. This establishment aimed to accommodate learners who could not be admitted to local schools due to the high rate of learners who were seeking admission. Furthermore, the intention was to offer quality teaching and learning programs. The school was officially opened on the 6th October 2000 by Mr. Ignatius Jacobs, the MEC for education. Mandisa Shiceka High school is a public school under the Gauteng Department of Education. It is named after the late Mandisa Shiceka who was a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Dr. V.K. Joseph was officially appointed as the 1st principal of the school in August 1998. We have a Teacher / Learner ratio of 1:30 and our school quintile is 4. The school has ±60 percent of learners whose parents are not working. Furthermore another ±20 percent of parents who are working earn below minimum wage. This situation presents a challenge where parents are not able to meet the basic needs of their children. They cannot afford to provide lunch, in a form of food or pocket money for their children. Ensuring a high level of academic excellence through quality teaching and learning through maximum participation of all stakeholders. Our vision is to make sure that learners develop certain knowledge, values, and attitudes that will ensure that when they leave school their behavior will make them responsible and independent citizens that will be productive in a global community. The school is consistently achieving good results for the past 10 years. We have been titled as having the best chess team for our district. We also have won a trophy and 2 football kits in the Silver Stars Competition for under 16. Once again Mandisa Shiceka High School remains one of the shining stars of Gauteng West District. During the weekend we want to allow our current learners to enjoy themselves and meet former students. We also want to give our current learners the chance to showcase their talents and develop their entrepreneurial skills. The proceeds from the reunion will go towards a library/media center for our learners. This event will allow current learners to practice their entrepreneurial abilities. A stand of 3m by 3m will be allocated to participants on the hockey field. Application forms are available at the school office. Parents or Guardians of current Navalsig learners will pay R100 for the use of the stand and will be granted the opportunity to sell arts, crafts, food, or other approved goods. It was in the second semester of 1997, through a prophetic utterance by Dr. Bill Hammond that God birthed Kingdom Academy. Approximately seven years before this, God shared His dream for this school with the leadership of the church and sent us on a mission to various other schools to establish His perfect will. Foundation Phase digresses from the NCS (CAPS) curriculum, Intermediate and Senior Phases (Grades 4-7) follow the NCS (CAPS) curriculum, except for portions of work that differ from Biblical standards and where reinforcement is necessary. Biblical principles are incorporated into all Learning areas. All learners will also attend Computer lessons and Discipleship every week. Learners are expected to “do unto others as they would have others do unto them”. Learners are encouraged to display a Christ-like attitude by being respectful and tolerant towards others. No corporal punishment may be administered, however firm control will be kept in the classrooms, and learners are expected to abide by the Kingdom Academy Code of Conduct at all times. In disciplinary matters, the Kingdom Academy’s Disciplinary Code will be followed. If necessary, the educator is allowed to bring the learners back for detention written once. At NHS, we regard the sports program to be very important and integral in the holistic development of a child. The school believes that sport helps to establish a wonderful rapport between staff and pupils. Efficiently coached and organized, sport promotes friendships, group integration, self-confidence, and assists in the development of personal maturity and interpersonal skills. Not only are our top players considered – every learner is encouraged to participate and enjoy his chosen activity. The school sports policy encourages all learners to participate in at least one sport. We at NHS are always proud of our learner's achievements in their different fields of sports. We are also proud of our overall sporting achievements over the years. The school, once renowned for its sporting prowess, has long enjoyed a tradition of excellence on the sports field. This is why we are embarking on a major drive to start our very own Sports Development Academy together with the Department of Sports and Recreations Sports Focus School program. Cultural and Service activities have always been part of the balanced make-up of learners at Newcastle High School. Our school is known for individual learners’ participation in activities spanning the entire spectrum of culture, service, and sport. We encourage our learners to participate in the wide range of cultural and service events on offer. This extra-curriculum program at Newcastle High is diverse to cater to the variety of interests of our learners. Cultural and Service activities are structured to augment both individual and team performances.
