St Mary’s Music School is Scotland’s only independent specialist music school, offering a world-class standard of music and academic education to musically gifted children aged 9-19 years in an inspiring, inclusive and supportive environment. It is also the Choir School of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh. It is co-educational, non-denominational, and attracts day and boarding pupils from across Scotland and beyond – England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Europe, and internationally. Entry to the school is by audition and assessment, based on musical ability and potential, regardless of personal financial circumstances or background. Scottish Government funding, up to 100 percent, is available through the Aided Places Scheme to assist with the cost of tuition and boarding fees. The school is funded by fees, private and trust donations, and rental income generated by the school. There are currently 81 pupils at the school of whom 49 are day students and 32 are boarders, together with one part-time student. In addition, the school runs a long-established program of Saturday Music Classes for children aged 4-14 during term time, enabling some 150 local children to discover the wonders of music. The Choir School was opened in 1880 to educate the choristers for the newly built St Mary’s Cathedral. Links to the Cathedral remain strong and have evolved over the years so that the choir is open to girls as well as boys. Since 1972 the school has also educated young instrumentalists, composers, and singers. Appropriately for Scotland’s specialist music school, it attracts several pupils who perform on traditional instruments such as bagpipes, accordion, and clarsach. These intensive sessions, which are designed to improve technique and musicianship, introduce repertoire, develop expression and encourage personal interpretation. Pupils receive up to two hours per week on their principal study. The Director of Music is responsible for matching pupils with teachers. The full range of orchestral instruments is offered, along with voice, organ, clarsach, accordion, recorder, bagpipes, and composition, but any instrument would be considered. In addition, all pupils study a second instrument on which they will be given either a half-hour or an hour’s lesson. One of the studies should be piano or another harmony instrument. Practicing is scheduled each day to run alongside the regular timetable. A particular feature at St Mary’s Music School is the allocation of a coach-accompanist with whom a pupil works each week throughout the Senior School. A weekly performance class provides an ideal opportunity for peer evaluation and discussion, while the final hour of the week covers a range of Performance Practice related topics, from instrument maintenance to audition preparation tips and exploring the importance of breathing, relaxation techniques, and posture. St Mary’s is a one-form entry Church of England Primary school with an open admissions policy. All distances will be measured using the Council's geographical information system. The starting point for our school’s curriculum is the National Curriculum. We ensure that the National Curriculum is taught and we aim to go beyond this by increasingly offering a wider range of activities to enhance and enrich the children’s interests and stretch their abilities. Our school has a specialism in Arts and Music, and the opportunities for these areas are targeted throughout our provision. This is within the everyday planning for teaching and learning in the classroom, and beyond through enrichment provision. Our school’s curriculum is based on four cornerstone principles. These have been developed with all the staff and shared with governors and are underpinned by the values embodied in the school’s mission statement. Early Years (reception) has a one-year program that teaches the same essential skills required each year though the precise nature of each theme is adjusted according to the interests, abilities, and diverse nature of each cohort. The main curriculum drivers will be the same throughout each key stage which in turn enables shared learning and extension of learning in a broad direction. We publish our long-term overview for the year on the website but it is subject to some change and review as it is a dynamic plan, responding to the interests of the children and the events of the world around us. The purpose of assessment is to inform both the learner and the teacher of the next steps to improve and progress. Assessment at St Mary’s is an ongoing process that takes place in each lesson. This is known as ‘assessment for learning – the teacher feedback and encourages the child to reflect upon what he or she has learned and how to improve next time, and also to value what has been achieved. We measure progress more formally every half term (six times a year) against criteria within the National Curriculum. Teachers are experienced and able to see when a child requires more support or is ready to move in after each lesson, and the half-termly checkpoint serves to draw together this information. Teachers work with the local authority (Richmond and Kingston) and local schools to validate their judgments as good practice. We aim to create a fully inclusive school that offers pupils an excellent education. Our priority is to serve the community, whilst drawing on Hampton’s unique heritage and beauty to enhance learning and nurture a sense of community spirit in the children we teach. Working at home is of great value in completing and reinforcing work done in school and helps to establish the self-discipline of individual study. All Infant and Junior classes are set homework tasks in Maths and English alongside reading practice and spelling lists. These tasks are to be completed in the children’s yellow homework books unless otherwise instructed. The children are also given a ‘homework grid’ at the beginning of each half term. These grids consist of a range of homework tasks connected to their topic. The children have the half term to choose at least two of the tasks, although there is an expectation that they work through them progressively over the weeks rather than leaving it until the final week. The internet is a fantastic place overflowing with knowledge, games, and communities of people, and, just like pupils across the country, the pupils here at St Mary's Primary School spend a great deal of time using the internet within the school and at home. This is why it is important pupils at St Mary's, learn how to be safe when browsing online and becoming members of online communities. In school, children learn about E-Safety through a scheme of lessons. We also encourage parents/carers to talk to their children about how to behave safely when online, to ensure pupils remain safe when browsing at home. E-Safety does not just encompass Internet technologies but also electronic communications such as mobile phones. At home, sometimes children can be given unsupervised access to the internet. The PTFA is a group of parents, school staff, and friends who give time voluntarily to organize fundraising activities for the school community. The members also act as a point of contact for other parents and carers, who may wish to raise concerns or put forward ideas to help improve the school and its environment. The primary aim is to use the funds raised to provide ‘extras’ for the school. The parents of the school vote for yearly fundraising priorities and the school gives a ‘wish list’ of items they feel would benefit the children. For example, last year Friends of St Mary’s bought the outdoor tables and benches, amplifier and music equipment, and annual book bags for the nursery class. At St Mary’s we want all children to have the opportunity to experience the breadth of clubs and extra-curricular activities available. To support families we are currently offering some funded places per club for children who are eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant, on a first-come, first-served basis. Elections take place in January of each year. School Council has taken part in lots of exciting projects this year, including attending a Road Safety Conference and taking part in judging competitions in school. Our digital leaders are self-motivated children with a strong interest in technology. They help us to keep growing and improve our Computing Curriculum by researching and reviewing new apps and software. They also support other children and adults in the school to develop their computing skills. We have a Catering Operations Manager from Ashlyn’s who oversees and ensures that all food produced meets the Governmental Nutritional Standards as well as the Food Based Standards. the catering company that develops our menus, sources the ingredients and train staff. We provide a rich and stimulating learning experience for all the children in our school. We use a range of teaching strategies, approaches, styles, and activities to ensure all children learn to the best of their ability. St Mary’s has a strong school council which is elected by the children. Each year councilors and deputies are elected by their class. We also have a strongly committed environmental group called “The Green Team” which is responsible for developing the sustainability of the school and educating the whole learning community about the needs of the environment. This includes regular high-quality physical education, drug awareness, emotional well-being, and healthy eating. Healthy and nutritious food and drink are available across the school day. At break time Key Stage One and Foundation Stage children benefit from free fruit to encourage healthy eating. At lunchtime, children are encouraged to make healthy packed-lunch choices and a wide range of healthy school meals is available including vegetarian, halal, and European meals. All children have access to water throughout the school day. Our pupils are encouraged to walk or cycle to school to stay fit and healthy. We also have a “Walking Bus” that picks children up and safely delivers them to “Breakfast Club” for a healthy breakfast to start the school day. St Mary’s works very closely with parents and we pride ourselves on the close relationships we have developed. Parents are always welcome to speak to all staff about any concerns they may have. We run regular meetings and workshops on supporting children’s learning, developing parents' learning skills, managing behavior with Webster Stratton techniques, and many, many more. St Mary’s is a church school which, we believe, helps give us our distinctive character. Christian values and beliefs form the basis of our school ethos and are reflected in our teaching and the daily life of the school. Very importantly, we have a strong sense of community where all members of the school are encouraged to respect and value each other. St Mary’s is also very much part of the wider community in Twickenham. The history of the school dates back to 1645, so we have a long and successful tradition of providing education for local children. The children are guided to grow personally, academically, morally, socially, and spiritually in an inspiring, beautiful and safe environment. At the core of our vision is a determination to foster, in all children, a love of learning that will endure long after they leave us, enabling them to adapt easily to whatever future challenges they may meet throughout their lives. St Mary’s is a three/four form, three site school with excellent teaching and learning resources on each site: Amyand Park Road for Reception and Year 1, Strafford Road for Years 2 and 3, and Richmond Road house Years 4, 5, and 6. All children are entitled to attend on a full-time basis from the first day of term. For 2018/19, it is anticipated that all children offered a place in our Reception Year will have a staggered start in September with all pupils attending full time in October. Parents can request to delay their child’s entry to school until later in the school year, or to attend part-time, but only until the child reaches compulsory school age in that school year. The latest your child can start school is at the beginning of the summer term of 2018. It is the expectation of the school that any departure from the pattern of attendance will be agreed upon by consultation between parents and the school before the start of term and to minimize disruption, variation to the agreed pattern will thereafter only be agreed upon in exceptional circumstances. If there are more applicants than places, the school will place an applicant’s name on the waiting list. The governors will then work with the local authority to offer places, as they become available, using the same oversubscription criteria set out above (i.e. criteria A-E). Late applications will be slotted into the waiting list in the same way. The waiting list will remain open until 31 August 2019, after which applicants will drop off the waiting list unless parents have confirmed in writing that they wish their child to remain on the list for the following academic year. Applications are coordinated by the school in conjunction with the Local Authority’s in-year admission officers. An Application Form available from the school office should be completed and returned to the school. If applicable, parents should also obtain a Supplementary (Foundation) form, available from the school, and return it to the school. We can admit children ‘in-year at any time and will work to offer a place as soon as there is one available in the appropriate class. Applicants will be ranked according to the oversubscription criteria A-E set out above11. The Primary Years are divided into two phases: Infant for ages 5 to 7, known as Key Stage 1, and Junior for ages 7 to 11, known as Key Stage 2.Both Key Stages follow the framework of the National Curriculum. For each subject and each key stage, programs of study set out what pupils should be taught, and attainment targets set out the expected standards of pupils’ performance. Pupils are assessed at the end of KS 1 (Year 2) and the majority are expected to work at levels 1-3. The assessment also takes place at the end of KS2 (Year 6).In both Key Stages, the statutory subjects that all pupils must study are art and design, design and technology, English, geography, history, information and communication technology (ICT), mathematics, music, physical education, religious studies, and science.
