EVSU addresses its academic endeavors towards developing the socio-economic condition of region VIII by emphasizing human resources and necessary input to production and growth. It plays a significant role in providing the human resources for industrial agri-business enterprises and the small, medium, and large-scale industries, which are the components for regional development.
The College of Architecture & Allied Discipline has its humble beginnings as a 4-year course under the Civil Engineering Department of the College of Engineering. The course was opened in 1976 by LIT Board Resolution No. 747, s. 1976. The program was revised into a five-year ladder-type curriculum in SY 1981-1982 thru Board Resolution No. 1288, s. 1980, in compliance with the Ministry of Education Culture and Sports (MECS) Order No. 32, s. 1979. in the same school year, the program became a separate department under the LIT College of Engineering. The Bachelor of Science in Interior design was approved in principle thru Board Resolution No. 30, s. 1998 and took effect in SY 1999-2000. In line with its commitment to pursue academic excellence, the college continues to produce quality graduates and board topnotchers. From 1990 to the present, it has produced two board placers in Interior Design and nine topnotchers in the Architects Licensure Examinations. It ranked fourth place in the top-performing schools in January 2004 Licensure Examinations.
The College of Arts and Sciences began as a college in 1982 with Prof. Gaudencia Genotiva as Dean. Courage, risk-taking efforts, and deep commitment to development served as guiding principles in the pioneering stage of building a new college. The college started from barely a small room with only a table and a chair as facilities. It took time to "build" not only human resources but also physical resources. The college started with the supervision of two programs, namely Bachelor of Arts in (A.B.) Economics and Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) Accounting. Integrating the supervision of the "arts and sciences" of the Institute was a critical accomplishment made. The supervision of the first two years, which is general education program either discipline in the arts and sciences took much courage, but streamlined management for efficient and effective service resulted in the risk-taking efforts of the "pioneer" staff and faculty of the college built confidence in the whole Institute to continue developing this service college.
The College of Business and Entrepreneurship started as a department under the College of Arts and Sciences. But because of the realignment of business-related courses, COBE was established as a separate College effective August 27, 2002, upon the Board of Trustees' approval.
Society today is pervaded by a technology that is changing at an ever-accelerating pace. Every sector of the community is challenged to respond appropriately to the needs of the time. The Eastern Visayas State University, as a technological state university in this part of the region, continuously envisions offering relevant courses. Specifically, The College of Technology never ceases to be challenged in expanding and clarifying its functions. It has reevaluated the current emphasis of technology courses and has evaluated curricular functions that would best reflect current technological trends. It is an accepted fact that one of the main characteristics of the technological world is change. It can also be said that one of the main characteristics of an effective educational program in the school curriculum is change.
The Eastern Visayas State University had its humble beginnings in 1907 as a Provincial school. It became a separate educational entity in 1915 and was renamed the Leyte Trade School, funded by the Provincial government. In 1953, after thirty-eight years, it was renamed as the National Provincial Trade School under R.A. 406 funded jointly by the National and Provincial Government to cover a wider curricular area. In 1961, the Congress of the Philippines passed Republic Act 1516, converting it into the Leyte Regional Arts and Trades and authorizing it to become a training institution for vocational and industrial education in Eastern Visayas. Finally, the Republic Act 4572 was enacted by the Philippines' congress, which took effect in the school year 1965-1966, further converting the school into a chartered college. It was renamed the Leyte Institute of Technology, an institute of higher learning committed to the service of a larger academic area of responsibility.
For SY 1999-2000, LIT has its satellite campus, the Ormoc satellite Campus. In 1999, under the provisions of RA 7722, 8292 and 8745 and Board Resolutions No. 59, Series of 1999, two CHED Supervised institutions (CSIs) in Leyte, namely the Leyte College of Arts and Trades and the Burauen Polytechnic College, were integrated to LIT. The LIT Dulag Campus started in SY 2000-20001. The Carigara School of Fisheries was integrated into LIT, the second phase of CSIs institution to SUCs.
In 2002-2003, LIT had continued accomplishing its significant role and responsibility to the people in the region. The introduction of new programs, technological and business, the realignment of courses, and the high-passing percentage of the engineering and other professional programs established a great challenge and tremendous responsibility to the institution. Finally, in 2004, Republic Act 9311 converted the Leyte Institute of Technology into Eastern Visayas State University, a challenge to serve Eastern Visayas through academic excellence and technological development.
