EduCativPosted October 27, 2020SharePosted October 27, 2020 Welcome to St. Paul Academy and Summit School! SPA is an independent K-12 school with two beautiful campuses in the heart of Saint Paul's Macalester-Groveland neighborhood. At SPA, we work hard to deliver the tangible elements of an exceptional educational experience, but what makes our school unique is intangible. Parents and students tell us that they feel a particular kind of energy when they walk through our doors: an openness and warmth that reflect our values and culture. We invite you to discover what makes SPA so extraordinary: our curriculum, the diversity of our community, and above all, our mission: to shape the minds and the hearts of the people who will change the world. At SPA, students are challenged by what we believe is the best academic curriculum in Minnesota. They are supported by the individual attention possible by the lowest average class size of comparable independent schools in the state: Lower School classes average 13 students, Middle School classes average 15 students, and Upper School classes average 14 students. Across all three divisions, our student/teacher ratio is 8:1. Small class sizes, however, are just the beginning. The SPA curriculum takes advantage of those small classes through an academic program designed to build both skill and confidence at every grade level. In the Lower School, these small classes, each led by a teaching team of two homeroom teachers, allow for a thorough and age-appropriate introduction to intellectual inquiry. The careful use of differentiation--grouping students into small learning cohorts--allows master teachers to offer plenty of attention and individualized guidance to our youngest students. Educational technology is introduced in Kindergarten and is integrated into learning in both the homerooms and specialist classes. In the Middle School, an increasingly rigorous curriculum is supported by Developmental Designs for Middle School, a social-emotional pedagogy in which teachers push students intellectually while still offering them the support they need to navigate young adolescence. The advisory system is a fundamental component of this support, as is the continued use of educational technology, emphasizing digital citizenship, and online safety. By the time they enter Upper School, students are ready for SPA's challenging and innovative college preparatory program that emphasizes discussion-based learning, advanced inquiry, the lively discussion around Harkness seminar tables, and deep engagement with ideas. As students prepare for life after SPA, our extensive College Counseling program begins, with each student assigned one of three full-time College Counselors in Grade 10. Our mission—to shape the minds and the hearts of the people who will change the world—is a promise to our students and our families. It is intentionally ambitious, so it will push us to be thoughtful about everything we do. It inspires us to be our best and reminds us that we have the responsibility to respect every child's unique potential. There are thousands of decisions made every day by teachers, administrators, and students. In sum, these decisions serve to define who and what we are. We ask everyone in our community to use our mission statement as a filter: is this decision aligned with our mission? The mission also sets a high standard for our students. We shape their minds by teaching them how to think clearly and creatively. We shape their hearts by teaching them how to be sensitive to the personal struggles of others. In the end, we open doors, show them pathways, and support their passions. It is then up to each of them to choose their direction, apply their talents, and embrace their potential. Our mission gives us purpose. It represents our greatest aspirations and values. But most of all, it reflects our deep belief in the talents and capabilities of our students.
