The British School Salalah is a small, nonprofit community school gifted to the British community in Salalah in the 1970s by the Sultan of Oman. It began its life as a few huts on the beach built to educate the children of the British Military who were posted in Salalah in the 1980s and, over time, has blossomed into a school that educates 105 children of many different nationalities on a purpose-built site in Dahariz.
The school is run by a Board of Governors made up of parents, teachers, and influential professional members of the community in Salalah. The Head Teacher, however, is in charge of the day-to-day running of the school and all matters about the curriculum and assessment, supported by a dedicated team of teachers and administration staff.
Key to our success is the small classes in which traditional high expectations are combined with modern teaching methods, ensuring each student achieves the best possible results according to his or her abilities and talents. Beyond the classroom, life at the British School is exciting and fulfilling. Our many and varied extracurricular opportunities offer children the chance to gain confidence in whichever area they discover their interests lie. We believe strongly in Education Outside the Classroom and in ensuring, as the great man Aristotle once philosophized, that we educate the hearts of our students and not just their minds.
We are a nonprofit, nonselective, coeducational, British day school located in Dahariz, Salalah. We care about our community and each other and know our students and families personally, enabling positive working relationships. We are a welcoming, open, friendly school with children from a variety of backgrounds, countries, and cultures. The children interact well together and form genuine friendships without borders.
The vision of British School Salalah is to empower happy, lifelong learners who are independent, confident, and successful. The British School Salalah provides an inclusive learning experience through the National Curriculum of England and Wales that encourages students to be successful and confident individuals with a global perspective.
We take a holistic attitude to education, ensuring that each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged both within and outside of the classroom. We believe a child who is valued and helped will achieve his or her personal best. We are committed to the principles of inclusion and equality of opportunity. The efforts and achievements of the children are valuable and celebrated by the whole school. This is true for parents, students, and teachers alike. We view learning as an enjoyable experience, and we believe that every child can improve and progress. We expect our parents to be fully engaged in the learning process.
From the gentle introduction to learning that is provided by our Bananas Nursery Programme through to the steps taken towards independence in Years 7, 8, and 9, the British School Salalah curriculum provides its students with a varied approach to learning that builds on each child’s strengths while, at the same time, pulling the whole school together in a bond of mutual respect and collaboration. The National Curriculum of England and Wales is based on a structured and broad framework that outlines expected levels of achievement for the duration of the children’s education and provides a regular program of assessment and evaluation.
We maintain a high standard of education, based on the National Curriculum of England & Wales. We believe in teaching the individual child and differentiation within the classroom which means that your child will receive the best out of his or her education.
Significantly smaller class sizes are proven to improve academic achievement and ensures that we meet each child's individual needs. At the British School Salalah, we ensure that our class sizes remain small. All of our teachers are fully qualified, native English speakers who know the curriculum, the subject matter, and the teaching practice and principles of the school. Our children are encouraged to learn and develop outside the classroom through our EOTC program which includes a wide range of after-school activities, school trips, and overnight stays.
