Chadwick Schools develop global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge, and the ability to lead. Chadwick Schools are deeply committed to self-discovery through experience and reflection. Students develop the joy of learning, self-confidence, well-being, and curiosity through interactive and practical experiences. Our schools share the core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, fairness, and compassion.
Through active participation in an intentionally diverse and inclusive environment, students make a positive impact within and beyond their communities. By living and learning in a student-centered, collaborative atmosphere of excellence, integrity, and trust, we come to expect the best of ourselves and others.
Chadwick School has grown significantly since its opening in 1935, but the legacy of its founder, Margaret Lee Chadwick, remains a driving force behind the school’s continued development. Now in its 75th year, Chadwick has more than 800 students in kindergarten through grade 12 and has graduated more than 3,000 students. One of Chadwick's most significant milestones is the founding in 2010 of Chadwick International School in Songdo, South Korea, expanding opportunities for students around the globe to benefit from a world-class Chadwick education and become lifelong members of the Chadwick Community. For a complete history, visit Chadwick’s Leavenworth Library or the Local History Room of Palos Verdes Peninsula Library. Both houses all of the books Mrs. Chadwick wrote about the school, as well as yearbooks from each graduating class.
Chadwick International is an authorized IBPYP school with a self-generated curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate Organization's (IBO) curricular program. The curriculum construction is based on a backward design model from the recognized “Understanding by Design" (UbD™) framework and is an ongoing process involving all stakeholders of the school.
Chadwick International provides opportunities in an environment where leaders are actively encouraged, developed, and mentored as they grow into future leaders in their communities. Teamwork along with a competitive spirit is among the most important skills our students learn. At CI, students have multiple leadership opportunities - Village School through Upper School student council, Upper School Honor Council, various student-led clubs, after-school activities, servant leader, and more.
Early in their schooling, potential leaders are encouraged to take leadership roles under the supervision of mentor teachers, coaches, and various activities. As they move into Middle School and eventually Upper School, they are poised and ready to lead student council, school clubs, and CI athletic teams. Student leadership is a developmental process where students are mentored by caring teachers who instruct and guide them as they grow and develop. Under the watchful eye of these mentors, students take on greater levels of responsibility eventually starting or leading clubs and initiatives at Chadwick International. These servant leaders are encouraged to lead by example and help develop the future leaders of Chadwick International.
CI has created a caring community led by students who know how to collaborate, how to express ideas, how to divide up work, and how to agree about how to get things done. Character and leadership are taught throughout all programs including physical education/athletics and the arts in which all students participate. Our goal is to develop students who consistently display persistence, courage, teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, and individual commitment, as well as a competitive spirit.
The ability to learn and communicate through a range of languages is the mark of international education espoused by Chadwick’s mission to develop global-minded students, who will impact their world. Language Learning at Chadwick includes supporting students in the learning of their mother tongue while assisting the acquisition of additional languages, including Mandarin, Spanish, or Korean. English is the common language of teaching, learning, and communicating in the Village, Middle, and Upper Schools.
In the Village School, the language needs of students are accurately assessed and provided for, including support in one’s mother tongue. Each student remains in full care under a homeroom teacher, student support team member, and counselor, to ensure the child’s development of English, Spanish, or Mandarin, and their first language. In Middle School, students are encouraged to take the first steps in acquiring an additional language through the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Mandarin, Spanish, or Korean acquisition courses, while providing first language courses for Korean native students. Each student is assessed and placed according to their language needs so that they can fully participate in the courses offered. Students in the Upper School continue to develop their mother tongue and an additional language in pursuit of becoming a balanced bilingual/multilingual individual with global perspectives and leadership prowess.
Chadwick International aspires to develop a culture of philanthropic giving throughout our community and build a sustainable financial model for Chadwick International. One way we aim to meet these goals is through the Founder’s Circle designed to lead and pass down the legacy of financial support and stewardship. Donations to the Founder’s Circle meet various needs of the community including tuition assistance and scholarship, capital projects, and local civic engagement.
Chadwick School is the only K-12 independent coeducational day school in the greater South Bay Area. Our 45-acre campus sits atop a hill on the scenic Palos Verdes Peninsula - a tranquil setting conducive to serious study, opportunities for self-discovery, and companionship among friends. With a commitment to economic, social, and ethnic diversity, Chadwick draws students from approximately 45 different zip codes. The school community remains true to founder Margaret Chadwick’s guiding principles, blending them with the innovations of the ensuing years. Chadwick School emphasizes academic excellence, personal growth opportunities, and development of character, as represented by our five core values: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Fairness, and Compassion.
