BSK is proud of its reputation for academic, sporting, and creative excellence. BSK is also proud of its reputation for offering the widest range of extracurricular activities of any school in the region. Most of all, BSK is proud of the achievements of its students that provide the evidence for the claim to be Kuwait’s, Premier School.
The British School of Kuwait (BSK) traces its origins to 1978 when a small kindergarten became known as The Sunshine School. Steady growth took place through the 1980s and, having recovered from the ravages of the 1990 invasion of Kuwait, by 1992 the school accommodated 550 Kindergarten and Primary age students. The decision having been made to serve the community at both Primary and Secondary levels, a move to the present site in Salwa took place, and in September 1993, newly renamed, The British School of Kuwait opened to 900 students.
Currently, there are over 3200 students from Reception to Year 13 at BSK. They come from more than 70 countries and follow the National Curriculum of England through to GCSE, IGCSE, AS, and A-Level qualifications. The school provides a structured, caring, and happy environment for learning with excellent resourcing and a qualified, highly-trained, and well-motivated staff.
The crest of The British School of Kuwait incorporates several aspects of the school’s history. The bold sunrise symbolizes our students’ potential, setting out on their lives of achievement. The sun also reminds us of the original Sunshine School and its climb to success. The sun is seen rising over blue water with its strong reference to Kuwait where the sun breaks daily over the Gulf on the eastern horizon. Finally, the crest is adorned with branches of laurel, a traditional accolade, in this setting celebrating academic and cultural achievement.
The British School of Kuwait aims to offer its students a rigorous and rounded education that is relevant to the demands of modern life.
Striving for excellence in all areas of school life is the cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Evidence for academic excellence is found by comparing the attainment levels of our students with their peers in any other international or British school. Further evidence is found in the outstanding public examination results and in the list of world-famous universities to which our students gain admission.
Evidence for sporting excellence is found in the many, recently awarded, trophies and cups adorning our display cabinets. In recent years, BSK has dominated the finals in competitions organized by KFSAC and ISACK and our participation extends beyond the borders of Kuwait.
Our philosophy extends to the provision of excellent extracurricular opportunities for our students. BSK offers the widest range of extracurricular opportunities of any school. From the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award with expeditions to Jordan (bronze), Cyprus (silver), and Sri Lanka (gold) to Crest Award from world-class debating to Model United Nations from LAMDA to ABRSM courses from computing to astronomy from skiing to martial arts from the Spanish Club to the Sports Leaders program… the opportunities seem endless and provide evidence of our commitment to roundedness in the education of our students.
Social awareness through links with the international community is deeply embedded within the ethos of BSK. We benefit hugely from the cultures and experiences of upwards of 70 different nationalities of students. Through the links with the Goethe-Institut in Germany, the British Council, the service work of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award program, and the philanthropic efforts of the Sixth Form Charities Committee and the House charity initiative, the evidence for excellence in personal and social education are clear.
Not all students and their families are ready to take advantage of the education on offer at BSK. We have a strict admissions policy that ensures our students are academically capable, highly motivated, and well-behaved. However, for our students, the environment for learning is designed to meet our aim of rigorous, rounded, and relevant education.
