Hsinchu American School was established to meet the educational needs of international students, enabling them to be successful in a post-secondary English-based program. Located in scenic Hsinchu, the Silicon Valley of Taiwan, one of the leading knowledge-based economies of Asia, our school has emerged as the only fully licensed international school to grade 12 in the area, due to the concerns from the professional community for an international school that can meet as well as exceeds the expectations of the global community represented here. Hsinchu American School is a co-educational and college-preparatory international school licensed by the Taiwan Ministry of Education and by Hsinchu Education Bureau serving grades 1 through 12. It is registered with the American Institute in Taiwan and is in the process of accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Nestled in the National Art Park, the school is surrounded by a scenic 21,500 sq. meter (6,500 pings) campus with newly renovated and state-of-the-art facilities for student achievement. Our classrooms are loaded with projector screens and wireless internet access. The spacious atrium in the middle of the building offers a safe environment for a diversity of indoor activities and celebrations. The sculpture park and the coming fine arts museum in the National Art Park provides an environment to nurture students’ appreciation of arts and promote their artistic creativity.
With our outstanding faculty, Hsinchu American School offers students the opportunity for Advanced Placement with an AP preparatory program from the 6th Grade. The school curriculum is based on the U.S. national McRel Standards, designed for university-bound students in the United States. We are extremely excited about the 2019-2020 school year, as well as moving forward in the future. Not only is this our 15th year, but the school also continues to undergo steady improvement in the areas of instruction, extra-curricular activities, and facilities. We are certain this will be one of the best years in the history of the Hsinchu American School. We are currently in the 5th year of a six-year WASC accreditation period and are looking forward to our next full visit in the spring of 2021. Gaining full accreditation was an arduous process, but we are all proud of the outcome and how it has provided us a mechanism for continual school improvement. We will be sending our new vice-principal, Mrs. Heather Wilson, to the EARCOS Conference this fall to receive training to be our WASC representative on visiting teams.
We are also excited here at HAS with the opening of lower elementary grades for the first time in the school’s history. We have hired several fully certified elementary homeroom teachers who will bring a great deal of excitement and energy to the design and creation of this program. The school is also currently constructing a dormitory that should be completed in the fall. This will allow students outside the greater Hsinchu area to attend our school and experience a great international educational program.
Hsinchu American School is an innovative school focused on preparing students for the constantly changing climate of the 21st century. The school provides a university preparatory program, for international students, using an American-based curriculum. The school offers a rotating schedule of Advanced Placement courses and places a great deal of importance on math and science courses, allowing advanced students to enroll in higher-level courses based on ability, as a means of propelling them to greater academic heights. Hsinchu American School also strives to provide students with a strong foundation in the classic liberal arts, to enhance their abilities in the four C’s (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity), and to furnish students with multiple opportunities for experiential learning. HAS is intent upon helping its students become global citizens, critical thinking, and lifelong learners. The program’s focus is to create young adults who can draw upon a plethora of knowledge and skills necessary for life-long success in the modern world.
Hsinchu American School’s Schoolwide Learner Goals – the LGs – have emerged from the vision and mission that were created as a foundation and framework for the school. These distinguishing skills and habits of mind and action not only support students in achieving academically but also in self-directed and continual learning, problem-solving, and adaptation. Since their original establishment in the fall of 2011, the LGs have been continuously reviewed, analyzed, and revised by all stakeholders in the school community. They have been most recently revised in the fall of 2013 after multiple sources of input culminating in a set of three areas for student development.
